February 1, 201610 yr Calipari didn't like it either but they both acknowledged that it's great for their schools and conferences. I didn't hear as much from Calipari as Self but I can see why both didn't care for it. However, as a fan, it was great. It used to be common place to play out of conference games in January/February. Pitino did it some, as did Sutton. I remember a four year home-and-home set with Syracuse late in the year when Eddie Sutton was coach. Joe Hall played some late season games with Houston, Oklahoma, and UNLV while he was coaching.

I'm not sure any head coach likes the idea of breaking away from the conference grind for a game like this...especially a top 25 game.
February 1, 201610 yr It doesn't come across on television what it's truly like at Allen Fieldhouse. There were times when the sound in the arena was just under the decibel level of a military jet taking off. It's hard for me to explain in words. It was so loud that it vibrated you. The power of the arena almost causes you to be overcome with emotion. Almost like you don't know whether to laugh or cry. Some of you would be much more impressed with Kentucky if you knew what that place was like. The fact that they had the ball with a chance to win in regulation is nothing short of phenomenal. Great description Wireman, brings back memories of games I saw years ago in completely hostile atmospheres. You get what it means to be a true Ky fan and I appreciate that!

I remember the Nova series. Also seems that Notre Dame was during the conference season for a while.
February 1, 201610 yr I remember the Nova series. Also seems that Notre Dame was during the conference season for a while. I recall Cats playing Florida State in '77 at Freedom Hall. UNLV at Rupp in '78 and at UNLV in '80. NC State, Home and Home in '85 and '86. It's not as novel as some make it out to be.
February 1, 201610 yr I have to believe, Cal anticipated having Dakari down low. What gametime is saying, whether Dakari returned or not, Cal shouldn't have tried to fit a round peg into a square hole. In a couple of interviews it sounds as if Cal has acknowledged as such. Skal made two elbow jumpers, a shot he is comfortable with. I can't come around to believing that Skal is a "fighter" until he can contribute at other places on the court and improve in some deficient areas.
February 1, 201610 yr It's not as novel as some make it out to be. True, but it has become almost extinct in the last decade or so. Edited February 1, 201610 yr by gchs_uk9
February 1, 201610 yr I remember the Nova series. Also seems that Notre Dame was during the conference season for a while. In 1997, Kentucky played Western Carolina on February 6 and Villanova on February 9. Back-to-back out of conference games in February. Doubt we'll ever see that again! Schedule for 1996-97
February 1, 201610 yr I'll say it right now. I'm picking UK to advance to the Elite 8 and have a great shot at the Final 4. And Kentucky will prove to be a better team than Kansas. I'll take the opposite.
February 1, 201610 yr And yes...there's nothing quite like Allen Fieldhouse singing Rock Chalk Jayhawk

February 1, 201610 yr Time for Cal to go to the NBA or where ever. UK needs a coach that can actually coach. 100% agree. How he and Coach K still are allowed to coach just goes to show how much influence ESPN has.
February 1, 201610 yr I think that Kansas is a better team, we did let this one slip away though. Agreed.
February 1, 201610 yr You pretty much can't even play Briscoe during end of game situations. Two times he got fouled and misses the front end of the bonus. Essentially that's two turnovers. He's too much of a liability on offense.
