If you have only seen him play this game, then I would agree with you......however, seeing just about every game he has played in Blue 'n Gold, those shots fall more often than not.

 

Those shots fall more often than not against teams that aren't all that good. I evaluate players as a pretty large part of my living, and he took low percentage shots against a team that wanted to force him to the perimeter. I see 5 star guys miss those shots all spring and summer because hitting a flat footed and contested shot from 22 feet is simply taking a bad shot.

 

If NCC is going to use him as a stretch center, get some rhythm looks. Every perimeter shot was forced and out of rhythm. Just calling a spade a spade...

That said, he is going to sit a lot if he thinks Scotty Davenport wants flat footed contested shots from 17-22 feet. Bellarmine has a bad year if they shoot 50% as a team. It isn't by accident...

Maybe we should rename this thread - How Bad Ben Weyer is - give the KID a break. Guess he should just quit now...

First saw Ben play when he was a frosh. Thought he was a one of a kind, special player. Have seen him through the years and I'm still a fan.

He probably shined a bit brighter with Drew McDonald on the court taking away a lot of the pressure down low.

Overall he's still a one of a kind player that I admire. People will try to bring him down so as to bring up their favorite player(s).

I would agree with this in past years. But this year CovCath was simply a better team. NewCath has very limited scoring options outside of Weyer and Moeves. I thought NewCath actually played as well as they could, and kept the game closer than it should have / could have been.

I think everyone would agree that he settled for a lot of shots.

Hoops, et al, who is trying to bring Ben down? He is Uber talented, no doubt. If anything, most of the comments in this thread are indictments of the coaches not looking for other ways to get him the ball.

Colonels aren't dirty. They are gritty and force officials to be consistent. I love that GCL style defense, except when they play NewCath and Highlands.

You lost me with the fouls Ben committed were "cheap" and then he was essentially assaulted on every trip. I didn't understand not posting up Ben early when he had AJ on him other than the 1x he did and was fouled. When Hepp was on him, he was easy to guard. He didn't have to be held, grabbed, assaulted, or anything else, because, as was mentioned, he essentially operated in a box at the elbow to screen twice, then pop out. When Hepp had him and Ben had the ball, he'd jab step twice then either settle for a bad three or reverse the ball. Once he got a back screen and he was able to get the ball going to the hole. Frankly, he just wasn't that hard to guard, which is crazy. He is super talented.

 

Moeves has a great stroke, but he is out of most sets just standing in the corner or sliding to the wing, and then back to the corner. Again, easy to defend. Hall needs to stay out of foul trouble because they lose a lot of play-making abilities with Pangallo and Ludwig.

 

The Anderson twins are very athletic, and bring a lot of energy, but when you add them to the best big in the region, they still get hammered on the glass. Coach Dawn needs to figure that out.

 

I don't agree with the thought that Ben needed to operate more with his back to the basket, except when AJ or Austin were on him, but they have to be more creative than him anchored to the left elbow every set.

 

I disagree. I get him to the post on at least 33 percent of the possessions. NewCath historically shoot awful at BBT. They need to get better possessions and looks. Ben in the block, whether facing up or not, allows for him to do a lot while giving CovCath a different look.

Then bench the guards until you find someone to feed your really good post player.

 

Unfortunately I only saw Weyer ever attempt to post up hard and seal a smaller defender a couple times. The big has to want to be the more physical presence...

 

Why don't they get the ball inside more? This will be the 3rd year NCC has had a big man and it doesn't seem they work to their advantages. More so with same result each year at NKU

I'm going to agree with many of what people said below your post. This hasn't been an bashing of Weyer but more so why can't the coaches at NCC can't figure out how to use a bigman. They seem to not know how to change things up. I'm sure the pressure was high last night, unfortunately he just didn't play like he we are used to seeing from him. He is still a kid.

NCC needs to learn how to play better at the BB&T arena. I would guess they are right at .500 at best in that arena. I know they are playing good teams when they play there in the regular season (CovCath and Holmes) and when they play there in the 9th region tourney. But even the games they win are usually low scoring games where the opposition shoots worse than they do.

 

I don't think it is the size of the floor since they have had so much success in the State All-A. I think that it is that it is a tough arena to shoot in for them. Weyer struggled on that floor before and he for sure is not alone in NCC's history in that category.

 

Maybe a different offensive strategy is needed when they play in that arena. That is tough to do but as long as the 9th region tourney is going to be there then it is necessary.

Was Moeves injury just cramps or did he pull a muscle in the leg?
