As a neutral observer with a pretty decent view all night, I thought the officiating was suspect as well. There wasn't one time a player from either team questioned a call and I didn't agree with them. Flood and CVH definitely were on the wrong end of some calls and the same was true for a few Newcath players as well.

 

In regards to Ben, he had an off shooting night. End of story. He was probably forcing things but as LB13 said, I've seen him make a lot of those shots with consistency. Just wasn't his night. Covcath's game plan was likely to force him to put the ball on the floor and they did a great job denying when he did post up. Physical game both ways last night.

 

At the end of the night, Covcath was the better team and that's why they won.

Wants to talk? I think he is just implying that CCH intends to take every game, whether is be against Bellevue or NewCath, as a game that they have to play their absolute hardest and play to win. I do not see it as him taking a shot at NCC at all.

Relax. He has certainly had more than one good game this year.

 

He backs it up against NCC and I think his words have some merit.

 

If NCC didn't like him yapping they had a couple of choices : shut him up by stopping him from putting up 16 or hammer him for yapping. Sounds like they chose option 3 which was to let him do his thing.

Over the course of senior guard Andy Flood’s career, CovCath has played a meaningful game against NewCath each of the last four years with the two teams ranked in the top five of the Enquirer Northern Kentucky area coaches’ poll. And every time CovCath has won.

 

Flood and his teammates made sure that trend continued Friday night, as the top-ranked Colonels took down the second-ranked Thoroughbreds 58-43 at the BB&T Arena as the final game in the Bluegrass-Buckeye Charity Classic.

 

Holding a 41-38 lead after three quarters, CovCath outscored the Thoroughbreds 17-5 in the fourth period to come away with a convincing win. Sophomore guard CJ Fredrick finished with a team-high 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Flood added 16 points, and Cole VonHandorf chipped in with 14 points, seven boards and five assists.

 

“It’s just another game for us,” Flood said. “Those guys over there hype it up every year, and we just come out and prove them wrong.”

 

Flood and VonHandorf combined for 12 of the Colonels’ 17 points in the final frame.

 

“This is the type of games where you take those early losses and you see what you learned from them,” CovCath coach Scott Ruthsatz said. “We learned that Cole has to have the ball in his hands at the end, and Flood has to have it in his hands.”

 

The game, which was slated for an 8:30 pm tipoff, didn’t get started until 9:51 due to traffic that delayed the showcase’s first game between Dixie and Scott.

 

After 13 lead changes and four ties through the first half, CovCath found some separation midway through the second quarter. A two by Fredrick jump-started a 12-3 run that lasted through the end of the period to give the Colonels a 30-22 lead at intermission. Fredrick scored eight of his 10 first half points during that stretch, finishing the half 4-of-6 from the field with four rebounds.

 

NewCath was just 5-of-20 from the field before halftime, but stayed in the game by getting to the free throw line. The Thoroughbreds were 9-of-13 from the charity stripe in the first half, while the Colonels were just 4-of-8.

 

NewCath came out of the locker rooms hot from the outside. Luke Moeves buried a three, and then Brian Anderson scored five straight points. His three from the right wing tied the game 30-30, and forced CovCath to call a timeout. The Thoroughbreds continued on a 14-2 run, pushing their lead to 36-32 on a three by Anderson with 3:32 left in the third quarter.

 

Anderson finished with a team-high 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting for NewCath. Moeves added 12 points, and was 3-of-6 from 3-point range.

 

CovCath came storming back. VonHandorf finished off an and-one and a drive in transition to give the lead back to the Colonels, and they finished the quarter on a 9-2 run to make it 41-38 after three.

 

“We were just trying to get them as tired as we can,” Flood said. “Once we get them tired, we know we can go on runs at the end of the quarters, and I think you saw that tonight. As leaders, (Cole and I) know we have to take over the game when we need to down the stretch.”

 

CovCath also held NewCath’s top player, Ben Weyer, in check. He finished with eight points on 2-of-12 shooting to go with eight rebounds.

 

“Shoutout to Will (Heppler),” Flood said. “He did a great job on (Weyer). Just from the beginning, we were staying low on him and boxing him out.”

 

For the game, NewCath shot just 30 percent, including 6-of-24 from inside the 3-point arc.

 

Ruthsatz said that despite playing a difficult schedule his team’s 11-6 start to the year was a disappointment considering preseason expectations. However, Friday night was a clear sign that the Colonels are improving. He credited a lot of that to the defensive effort. After reaching out to multiple college coaches and the legendary Bob Hurley at St. Anthony’s High School in New Jersey - where Ruthsatz previously coached - he decided to get back to basics.

 

“We’ve had a rough year from our expectations of where we thought we were at,” Ruthsatz said. “Losing is sometimes a great cleanser of things. We really learned from the Holy Cross loss that we’re getting too spread out or out of position specializing too much on one player, and giving up layups. We have to be more pack line, and keep the court tighter. We didn’t do anything other than defense the last two days in practice. No offense whatsoever.”

 

“Defensively we really needed to get it back, and tonight I thought we did a lot better.”

A question: Why was this called the "Bluegrass-Buckeye Charity Classic" when the field at BB&T included no teams from the Buckeye state?

We saw some posts last year about coaching and now we see posts about NCC not adjusting nor putting Weyer in the best position to help the team win.

 

Is it a fair criticism ?

I do chuckle when I hear the 9th region calls it "too tight" and "doesn't let them play" and then I read they let them play and it's a problem.

Fair enough. I will stand by my statement though that CCH coaches teach the players to treat every game like this one, since most schools see "Covington Catholic" on a jersey as a "target," meaning (for some schools) the biggest game of the year is against the Colonels.

 

But I like what you said in post #83; its like what Cam Newton said: If you don't want them to talk, you have to shut them down.
