The coroner has reported that it will be another 4-6 weeks before they know the cause of death. As a parent, I cannot imagine waiting to find the reason for my son's untimely death. Not to blame, just to know why.

Prayers go out to this family, the team and friends...

I cannot possibly fathom a loss like this. Honestly, after reading about this terrible tragedy, it really put things into perspective for me this morning. I cannot imagine.........

The thoughts and prayers of the entire Ryle community to all of those affected by this young man's tragic death.

I heard about this yesterday. Its a horrible thing to hear. Thoughts and prayers go with the family, friends, and teammates.

From growing up in Corbin, coaching in Henderson and now in Pikeville, I know personally that there are a few places where what's going on with its high school football team helps define how the community itself is feeling.

Pikeville's football family after practice remembered in prayer the family of the fallen player, the coaching staff, and the Henderson community as a whole.

Gods speed to this very very young man. We all want to remember him and his family in our nightly prayers. My heart goes out to them!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thoughts, Love and Prayers to the Henderson County football program and community, especially this young man's family, from WarriorNation. God Bless you.

read in another article that an Ohio Co. player collapsed as well, recovering in the hospital... the bracken polar bear family sends thier thoughts and prayers to henderson co.

I do NOT want to even imagine what the family of this young man is going thru right now. We all know in the back of our minds that at any given time this could be me. The only thing that keeps you going is to know that God never gives us more than we can bare. I trust that Ryan Owens is in a better place than any of us. May the Lord's perpetual light shine upon all those involved in this tragedy.

I agree with what Underthebridge said regarding hydration and fluid intake. One thing that I would have is that if you wait until the middle of practice try to rehydrate you're too late. Hydration must occur before practice starts. It's vital that for early-morning practices players get up early enough to consume enough fluid to get them through a morning practice. It is also very important that after late practice an athlete rehydrates before going to bed. A person can lose quite a bit of fluid through respiration and perspiration while they are asleep.

I would also add that proper nutrition is essential to preventing heat related illness. For morning practices get out of bed early enough to have meal before practice. For double sessions make sure that you have something to eat between practices and after late practices make sure to have good meal before retiring. I like to relate food intake to an automobile. You can't run the car without gasoline and food is the body's gasoline. Not enough food the body stops working.

Finally, while I am in no way shape or form suggesting that the tragic events in Henderson County had anything to do with supplementation I really feel like this must be said when talking about preventing heat illness. Many perfectly legal nutritional supplements can cause your body to become dehydrated more easily. Creatine in particular requires large amounts of fluid for your body to absorb it. It pulls fluid from the stomach and the intestines so that it can be absorbed in this can deprive other body symptoms of needed fluid. Your best bet during summer practices is just a leave the supplements alone.
