Ryle Basketball- Leading Candidates

Featured Replies

The problem at Ryle has been going on for years.

A year ago a kid that made the team transferred from Ryle to Trinity although his family still lives in Union. This year a senior player quit with only a few games remaining in the season, another player quit during a game, another player quit right before regionals. another player transferred, and many other athletic kids at Ryle refused to play because of the coach.

Are all these kids and parents the problem? Year after year, class after class for years!

Maybe you have involved parents at Ryle because they have reason to be concerned!

Most educated post I've saw on this thread so far :thumb: I know for a fact that many kids won't/didn't play because of the coaching. But....

Wasn't the topic of this thread who we think is going to get the job or is a candidate and not about the players and parents..?

This is not a new thing when it comes to parents. Coaches have been dealing with it for many years. Get real!

Let me say one final thing, don't make coaches out to be right all the time and parents to be the villians, because they are quite a few coaches that don't need to be in the profession.

I don't think anyone said coaches are right all the time and parents are villians. There are some coaches that don't belong in the profession. There are also parents who dont belong in the parental profession and need to worry about what their kids do off the court more so than what they do on. They also need to quit blaming the coaches for all their troubles and faults. Ryle may end up in better hands than Coach Niemi and they may not. The grass isn't always greener on the other side. From the way it sounds they better hope they get a specific coach from St. Henry to fix their troubles.

Now can we get back to candidates for the job?

It is hard to argue with those kind of facts. Except that the kid who transferred to Trinity did so to live with his brother who is his AAU coach and where most of his family lives, there was only one senior who quit this year during a game and that is because he was not getting enought PT and his parents were angry at the coach so he got fed up and quit. The player who quit in district did so for a variety of reason that can not easily be explained but lets say he and his parents have different beliefs than coaches. Maybe a new coach will be on the same page as them?? The kid who transferred to Cov. Cath was because he and his parents felt like he was better than the players that Niemi was playing. Of course he did not play any varsity at Cov. Cath, where he was at least dressing and going to play some at Ryle????

I would venture to say there are some good athletes that have not played basketball because of a variety of reasons- maybe the coaching- maybe that is a convenient excuse. But I think you will find that at every school regardless of size.

Parents have a right to do what is best for their kids, but sometimes they like to place the blame on someone instead of taking an unbiased look at there situation?

Sounds like a parent on the defense!

In the good old days parents stayed out of the coaches way and made the student athlete play harder to earn what should be!

You say coaches may not be right all the time, so if that is the case than more people should become more envolved and start coaching to make those tough decisions about playing time so everyone is happy. If not, stay off the coaches back and let them do there job!!

Im Telling everyone this,,,, Who ever takes the Ryle Job is going to strike gold in the next coule of years.....They had a very Good Freshman team last year and they have a great eigth grade class coming in....And they have great size two Guys at 6"3 who are still going to grow alot.....The next couple of years will be tough at Ryle but they are still a year or two away

No, I do not care to amend my statement. It fits perfectly.

So you know more than the NKY coaches who played against Ryle, scouted them, saw them on tape, and of course talked to other coaches about them. Man, did you miss your calling. :D

Maybe you should look into coaching yourself. Start off at the AAU level, I'm sure with all your knowledge and ability to judge talent, you'd win a ton of championships.

Just a few thoughts on who I think might take the job:

Brad Carr-Scott

Kevin Listerman-CCH

Terry Trame-Long time assistant of Niemi, might help or hurt his chances

Jeff Trame-Former Scott coach looking to get back into it. Terry would then follow in a few years

Mullins-Ryle freshman coach

Bennet-Walton

Grant Co. coach

Garnett-Conner Asst

Budman??????

I am 99% sure that Faust will not be leaving St. Henry to take this job. I'm sure he has been contacted about it but he will be at st. henry next season.

As for Henley, he will not leave this year either. Even if the drive is closer to Ryle than to Holmes, he is guarenteed talent almost every season at Holmes. Not to mention I've heard that he, like Marvin Lewis, enjoys working with kids that need help. He feels he can make a difference. He enjoys helping kids that have problems and kids that need basketball or a basketball coach or a friend in life. I'm sure he feels he can not only coach these kids at holmes, but also teach them how to be good people. I have the tremendous respect for Coach Henley or how he handles that program and himself.

And finally I would love to know if Buddy Biggs would have been interested if the job at Ryle if he hadn't already left for ashland. His family is from NKY and that would have been a job where he would have talent for years to come. Just a thought?

I agree with the Buddy Biggs theory but he had to of known that this job could have opened up at anytime. This hasn't really been a secret for some time.

Don't be surprised if a darkhorse emerges that none of us are thinking of currently.

All the rumor-mongering regarding Henley is completely ridiculous.

He was never close to leaving Holmes this year, even after the season ended.

Frankly, many are over estimating the Ryle job.

People talk about the talent they have/had.

I think Niemi got a bad rap out there.

They played in a tough tough district for the most part, and all of this talent I hear about, I really didn't see.

Doellman was very good and they won the region.

Feagan was a nice player.

They went to the region final a few years before they went to state.

Other than Robbie Lykes last year, who was a little better than average, just where is this talent that we hear about so much on here?

They play hard, offensively have a nice system, but in general most of their players are average players in the 9th Region.

I can't imagine Kevin Listerman leaving, he just got to CovCath.

The sophmore and incoming freshmen classes are filled with talent, and the Senior class finished 2nd in the freshmen tournament 3 years ago and 2nd in the JV tourney the next year (to CovCath both years). Of course, Holmes played all their players on Varsity those years, but it still shows that their is talent at Ryle.

I think one of their strongest points is that a their guards (Gray, Miller, I can't remember the other one) play other sports (baseball, football) and therefore have good size for a high school guard and are excellent rebounders. A lot of teams around here, especially the top teams, have smaller guards (Jacobs, Bovard, Sorrell, Giwa, Avery, Jefferson, and furthermore Hester). If they can find away to use that to their advantage (by slowing the game down), they will have a successful year.

I can't imagine Kevin Listerman leaving, he just got to CovCath.

He applied and sought the Summit Job after coming to CovCath -- don't put anything past him.

LABS, we don't disagree much, but I think Nate deserved every ounce of criticism he received, and about a ton of it he didn't.

I won't guarantee that Terry Trame gets that job, but I can tell you that none of these other mythical candidates wants it as much as he does, nor would be as proud to have it as he would.

Didn't Trame have some of the same problems that Niemi had in his program?

Did not know that.
