Paternal grandfather was born in the 1890's. He passed away at 94 back in the 80's when I was a kid. I remember him sitting around smoking his cigarettes, drinking his coffee, and eating everything cooked in bacon grease. He always said that everybody was born with cancer, and your body either fought it off or it didn't. He was a heavy smoker nearly his entire life, and he basically died of old age, no cancer. It makes you wonder if there is some truth to his philosophy.

One of my maternal great grandmother's was born in 1894 and died in 1975 when I was 15 years old. She was at most family functions up until her death. I was a pall bearer at her funeral.

 

One of my paternal great grandmother's was born in the 1800's and died in 1968. The only real memories I have of her is visiting her once or twice and she being a heavy smoker.

My grandfather on my mom's side was born in 1880 and died at the age of 85 in 1965 when I was 1 year old.

 

My mother was the youngest of 13 children + 3 miscarriages, and was born in 1929. Her oldest sister was born 1900 and would make my oldest aunt to be 115 if she were still alive. My oldest uncle would be 110.

I'm the youngest of a large family, and it's very unusual for me at age 51 to have everyone of my grandparents to have been born in the 1880's.

 

Most anyone that I know who is my age would likely have had their grandparents born in the 20th century, and not the 19th.

 

Although my dad was born in 1919, and my mother in 1929, her parents were older than his parents by a few years.

MY Sit-Sit(Lebanese G-Gmother) was born in Eb Elias Syria in 1895. She came through Ellis Island by herself in 1907. She died in 1981. Between 1910 and 1937, she had 16 children.

 

My paternal Great Grandmother was born in Chicago in 1899 and died in 1997. She was a flapper. I've seen the pictures, quite a babe back then.

I knew my mother's maternal and paternal Grandparents (my Great Grandparents). My maternal grandmother (who just passed away this week at 87) was the youngest. Her mother was born in 1895 and died in 1978 when I was 8. Her father was born in 1892 and died in 1982. I saw both of them quite often and have many memories. On my mother's father's side, my great grandfather was born in 1897 and died in 1979. My great grandmother was born in 1899 and died in 1995, two months before my oldest child (my daughter) was born.

My paternal grandmother died in 1962 when I was 8. She was born in 1888. My paternal grandfather was born in the 1880s but died before I was born.

My maternal grandfather was born in 1899. He died in 1976 when I was 22. My maternal grandmother was born in 1901 and died in 1995.

Mom's parents were both 1909 babies — she was the youngest of 3.

 

Dad's parents were both in 1919. All my grandparents are deceased, with Dad's father being the last around about 14 years ago.

 

Dad was eldest of 6, but he had a younger brother die at about age 3, when Dad was about 11 or so. Uncle Charlie. All of my Dad's brothers and sisters are still married/never divorced. We had Thanksgiving with them today.

Correction. My dad told me that his grandma was alive when I was born. She was born in 1899.

 

I didn't know her though, I was just a babe.

I remember each of them vividly. One great grandmother in Ohio County gave me lap time and taught me to count. The other one lived in a house connected to a General Store in Hancock County and had 50 cent pieces in her pocket she gave me on my birthday. My great grandfather lived in a beaten down house in Ohio County near the Grayson County line. I used to sit on his front porch listening to Cardinal and Cubs games. He liked both but the Cubs the best. He cussed like a sailor when things were not going well. My grandmother used to get mad at him for that, but I loved him and the time together.

 

I feel truly blessed to have spent time with them and remember them.
