Isn't there a college in Bowling Green. The name escapes me though. Something like Central Kentucky University.

I don't know either, but I live in western Ky (Princeton), and I have never considered Russelville, Bowling Green or Owensboro in western Ky and don't think many over this way do. I have always considered that central Ky. If I split it like ATLCat did you have 5 in west, 4 in central, 5 in east, 2 louisville, and 4 in NKY

@JoshMoore is a joke for the Lexington Herald Leader. The quality of the newspaper is at an all time low. He didn't even write about the game with LexCath vs Boyle County. I saw his ballot and you can tell that all he looks at is the record of a team to determine 1-10. Rather than Periscope ladies volleyball games get over to the games and do some reporting on football. If you don't wish to do such a thing allow someone else to do it so they can vote on the teams that they've actually seen. If there wasn't Twitter he'd be even more clueless........

I have also always thought that was funny. However, at the time it was created it was the furthest west of any college in the state, and trying to "sell" themselves to the western region of KY. For you history buffs, prior to 1922 Western Ky University was named Southern Business Normal School and Business College. Under the pressure placed on it by Senate Bill 14 of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky which made for a western Kentucky school and a eastern Kentucky school; the school then changed its name to Western Kentucky University and out of Senate Bill 14 Murray State University (1923) was born (the other school in Morehead).

Being a former History professor and instructor of Kentucky Geography....I can honestly tell you Bowling Green, Owensboro and Russellville have never been considered part of Central Kentucky......at least not in any of my classes.

 

For you geographical buffs, using longitudinal and latitude lines that cross the state: anything West of 87*W would make up western Kentucky, most of the area From 85*W to 87*W would make up central Kentucky (excluding the 7 counties that make up the Greater Louisville Metro area and anything north of 38*N), Louisville area is pretty self explanatory, 38*N and north of that point (again excluding the Louisville Metro) would make up Northern Ky, eastern Kentucky would be south of 38*N and east of 85*W. of course counties along these lines are subject to go either way. Can't be perfect. I include Owensboro and Russellville in central Kentucky since most of those two counties are east of 87*W.

The funny thing is that the Southern most counties in the state are not considered to be in Southern Kentucky. Calloway, Graves, Hickman and Fulton Counties

You can draw your lines however you want. No one is going to agree with Lexington and that area being Northern Ky. And trying to call Ashland N. Ky.? Those are fightin' words! I hope none of the Ram fans see your geography. This might turn into a 10 page thread.

As to the rankings themselves, the AP always seems to have some rankings that are almost embarrassing. To have Ryle above Cooper after Cooper just took Ryle to the woodshed tells me you aren't even paying attention.

Owensboro and BG not in Western KY? Huh? How can you honestly slice the state into 3 equal areas and not have them. Call me captain obvious but WESTern KY University is in BG and Owensboro is more West than BG. Owensboro track runs in the WKAC or the WESTern KY athletic conference.

Wow Not one of those are NKY I'll give you a hint, if it takes you an hour+ to drive to any of those you listed as NKY from Ft. Mitchell, then they aren't NKY.

I would consider Bowling Green more Southern than Western, but as there isn't really a 'Southern KY' region, it fits best into Western. Owensboro is obviously Western, and there's no way that Lexington could be NKY when it's further south (by a dozen or so miles) than Louisville. I could see a case for Ashland being NKY, but they fit 'Eastern' much better.

BG and Russellville are not Central KY unless you are going by WBKO TV out of BG which tag lines as South Central Ky TV.

 

BG and Russellville gets their Officials from the Sky Association. Which is south central ky officials assoc. but traditionally and geographically they are in the West.

 

Owensboro is west and pulls their officials from WK officials association.

 

Etown would be closer to central Ky or Louisville area.

 

Lexington and Frankfort are central ky or Lexington area. I really don't see any Nky votes except for maybe stretching Ashland from Eastern to NKY.
