Wow! That's all I have to say after reading some of the posts over the past two days.

This is a hypothetical scenario I've been running through my head the past couple days. I'm pretty confident I know the answer, and to me it simply illustrates why this is a topic that there's no point in discussing.

 

Hypothetically, let's say we enacted a law that banned all guns outside of law enforcement officers and military personnel. Hypothetically speaking let's also surmise that doing this would 100% eliminate mass shootings and gun violence. No wiggle room. There will never be another civilian death by gun again with this law enacted.

 

If these things were 100% guaranteed, how many of the pro-gun crowd would be okay with it?

Yes I train with police, believe it or not police have friends and are allowed to go out when they aren't waiting for your 911 call to save your life because you can't protect yourself. If you're so insecure and afraid to live in this country why don't you go elsewhere where you can feel better protected? Even though you want to take away gun rights, we still have freedom.

If that's how you view it, that's fine. Like I said it's a hypothetical. Point being, those who are pro-gun wouldn't be willing to give up their guns if they had 100% proof or guarantee that things like the Oregon mass shooting or the Sandy Hook shooting wouldn't occur ever again. Even if it were guaranteed that no one would ever die again from gun violence the vast majority of pro-gun people would still refuse to support it. Which all comes back around to my over-riding point, that the entire discussion of gun control is pointless. The pro-gun crowd is unwilling to even consider anything other than arming everyone or keeping things as they are.

I would not be. Simply put, people in power (politicians, police, etc) can NOT and should never be blindly trusted. Why, because they are human. The 2nd Amendment was not put in place for rabbit hunting and skeet shooting.

I'm not necessarily pro gun, I only actually own one that was bought by someone else for my birthday. I've never bought one myself.

There needs to be a lawsuit to establish precedent that if government will not allow you to be armed, then government must be accountable and responsible for your safety. When that fails, sue like hell. Do not submit to "Gun Free" zones.

Yes, I would be. A lot of people wouldn't be.

 

My whole point is to show that the vast majority of people who are pro-gun will never even consider any kind of change to the current laws, regardless of what it could mean with regards to gun violence. To me, that says they don't really care about incidents like what happened in Oregon or Sandy Hook.

 

I don't think anyone can deny that we have a problem with violence, specifically gun violence, in this country. Yet, a very large group of people refuse to even consider addressing it. It's the "criminals are always going to have guns, so nothing we can do" attitude that irks me.

 

The street criminals and gang-bangers, yeah, they'll always have guns. But the cowards that go in and shoot up movie theaters, or elementary schools, or college campuses? Those are the ones that can, while not completely eliminated, be greatly prevented. We have to be willing to have the discussion though. Very few in the pro-gun crowd are.
