October 8, 201510 yr What if banning all alcohol in the US would prevent every alcohol related deaths, 88,000 per year, would everyone be willing to give up all alcohol in the US?I won't beat around the bush. Nope, not a chance!
October 8, 201510 yr This is a hypothetical scenario I've been running through my head the past couple days. I'm pretty confident I know the answer, and to me it simply illustrates why this is a topic that there's no point in discussing. Hypothetically, let's say we enacted a law that banned all guns outside of law enforcement officers and military personnel. Hypothetically speaking let's also surmise that doing this would 100% eliminate mass shootings and gun violence. No wiggle room. There will never be another civilian death by gun again with this law enacted. If these things were 100% guaranteed, how many of the pro-gun crowd would be okay with it? Looks like your question has been answered.:thumb:
October 8, 201510 yr I don't deal in hypothetical where my constitutional rights are concerned. I deal in reality. The reality of it is, as has already been pointed out, that once government has complete power over the people they can pretty well do as they please. Add to that that in a crisis situation where seconds matter the police are only minutes away. Those aren't hypotheticals, those are realities. Funniest post of all time. You say you don't deal in hypotheticals but then go on to do just that, not once, but twice. If you are not in a -cue dramatic music- a "crisis situation" where seconds matter and the police are minutes away....then that is a hypothetical situation. Here I will fix your post for you......"I only deal in hypothetical situations wherein I deal heroically with a crisis situation by shooting someone."

Here I will fix your post for you......"I only deal in hypothetical situations wherein I deal heroically with a crisis situation by shooting someone." What color is the sky in your world? You are simply clueless. I happen to know several people that, thankfully for having a gun, were able to keep themselves from becoming victims, the police were nowhere near them when they were needed. This sort of thing happens pretty much daily. Tell them how hypothetical their situation was/is. The silly scenario that was presented is hypothetical and would be great if we lived in a utopia. Guess what? We don't live in a utopia. There's another reality for you.
October 8, 201510 yr Looks like your question has been answered.:thumb:Correct. Because common sense should tell everyone there are no guarantees in life. :thumb:
October 8, 201510 yr OK, hypothetically you are made Gun Guru overnight...your word is law. What Law would you write and put in place to ensure a School, Theater, Army Recruiting Center, Street Corner shooting never occurs again? I'm very open to discuss this issue and have repeatedly given my recommendations. I have no answers, but I'm definitely open to a lot of different things. ***End Hypothetical*** I don't want to, nor would I support taking guns away. I can definitely get on board with making it much more difficult for cowards like the Sandy Hook and Oregon shooters to get their hands on guns though. There is no doubt about it that our country has a very real gun violence issue. Something has to be done. The first step is to compile all the evidence and background information on these losers and analyze and research the crap out of it. Figure out what these guys have in common. Use that information to help curb others with those same issues from obtaining a gun. As I mentioned in another thread, I'd be behind regulations that prohibit anyone who's ever been (as an adult) convicted of a crime from owning guns. I'd also fully support, as part of the background checks done, having mental evaluations included. If that raises the costs of guns, so be it. Lastly, I'd prohibit anyone currently on or who had recently been on anti-depressant or mood altering medication or drugs from purchasing a gun.
October 8, 201510 yr I think that is a well formed post on the matter but my question is in the event that ever became reality, who foots the bill for the mental evaluation for this constitutional right? The gun buyer? The Govt?
October 8, 201510 yr I think that is a well formed post on the matter but my question is in the event that ever became reality' date=' who foots the bill for the mental evaluation for this constitutional right? October 8, 201510 yr I think that is a well formed post on the matter but my question is in the event that ever became reality, who foots the bill for the mental evaluation for this constitutional right? The gun buyer? The Govt? I would be more inclined to pass that cost on to the gun buyer than the Government. You have the right to own a gun, but no where (that I'm aware of) does it say how expensive that right will be.

If it applied to a right that you cared about, you wouldn't want to tax it.
October 8, 201510 yr You say you're not anti gun, but you're anti gun. If it applied to a right that you cared about, you wouldn't want to tax it. Not true at all. Of course, if wanting to find a way to keep guns out of the hands of the deranged idiots that do these mass shootings makes me anti-gun, I'll gladly be anti-gun. I'll just label you pro-mass killings.

I think that this is well thought out and has some merit, however.... the problem with mental health is that it has huge variability based on the conditions, so even a very thorough MH evaluation is only as good as the immediate situation. Secondly, I have worked extensively in the MH field, many of my peers in that field I wouldn't trust to evaluate something that is this significant. I just don't believe that many possess the ability to render a decision that removes a Constitutional right. I am more concerned that the Government would manipulate the evaluations / outcomes than anything else. Pair that with the manipulation of access to weapons and ammunition and we have the makings of a very different landscape in America than our Founding Father's envisioned.

Some of the stuff may not be viable options. I don't know. I simply feel we need to look at all options to see what will be a) the most viable, and b) the most successful at preventing this kind of stuff. I'm willing to consider any and all options.

Are you saying you would be ok with it ? Are you ok with the Patriot Act ?
