Rules Question - Unsportsmanlike Conduct

Featured Replies

Below are four situations I have seen in high school games this year. Please tell me which ones, if any, are unsportsmanlike conduct in high school.

1. A player is running with the ball into the end zone. There is no player on the other team within 10 yards of him. As he gets to the 10 yard line, he raises his hand and points to the sky with the number one sign.

2. A defender makes a tackle at the line of scrimmage. As he gets up from the pile, he does the move we often see today screaming as loud as he can and flexing. He is looking to the bleachers standing next to the player he tackled.

3. A player scores a touchdown. In the end zone he drops the ball and does a couple high steps in celebration. No defensive players are near him as he does this.

4. A player makes a tackle. As he gets up from the tackle he looks to the bleachers and does the palms up, of course I made the tackle, look at me gesture.

Which of these is unsportsmanlike in high school?

What types of celebrations are officials supposed to call unsportsmanlike?

1 & 3 for sure. It has nothing to do with God and that isn't even what he is describing.

2 & 4 depends on how much of a "show" they put on.

So it could be that all 4 are unsportsmanlike.

Then it's taunting.

To be honest with you, all of the situations you describe chap my butt, tired of this "look at me" mentality. Selfish kids who put themselves above the team, and yes, Stringer deserved the flag last night, uncalled for

Football is an emotion sport, and I get that. #1 . Is definitely a Unsporting act. #2 can be a taunting act, if he is close to the player he tackled, this one can be prevented by officials getting to the pile quickly. #3 , Does sound like much to me, but as my coach told me when you score, act like you've done it before. #4 . Doesn't sound like much except to excite fans. Again, can be prevented by officials getting to the pile quickly.

1.)Player holding up a #1 sign running into the end zone on a breakaway, IMO Should Not be a penalty.

2.)Yes I think #2 is a penalty if he is standing over the player, if he is just yelling from excitement and none is directed toward the player or the other team then again IMO Should Not be a penalty.

3.)Player drops the ball and high steps towards his teammates and it's a penalty, IMO it Should Not be a penalty

4.)No Penalty based on that description IMO.

What should be, IMO

Player visibly taunt the other player with the ball

Player making throat slashes

Player standing over a player to celebrate a big hit

Player tossing the ball to an opponent after a big play

I just hate to see a celebration that is not directed towards an opponent get flagged.

I don't think you can call any of those. Not one single one. Game is about emotion, having fun. If the kid isn't able to get excited as long as it isn't directed towards another player it should be allowed. Don't take the fun out of it.

None of them should be as described. Heaven forbid a kid show some emotion.

Good thing they don't throw unsportsman like conduct flags at volleyball games!

Yea ??? Wouldn't want to hurt little Bobby's tender feelings?? Heck yes a kid should be able to celebrate a good play. Not taunt but a happiness is ok geez!!! Some of these kids work there tails off year round to play in these 10-12 games. Football is a emotional sport. Not being jerk. But they should be able to show some emotion

If these chap your rear end, then you may want to quit watching football. These are not unsportsmanlike and probably won't stop anywhere in the near future. Its called emotion. Since when was a player not allowed to feel like "I can't be stopped"?

Gonna show generational gap here. None of them should be PF, assume all the Johnny Unitas don't put your name on the back of the jersey folks will disagree. It's emotion, simply nothing wrong with any of it. Oh no, Jr just raised his hands to the air, he is desecrating this game. Give me a break. Give me 11 kids with passion every time, I will win with that.

1. Not at all

2. I don't think so, unless it's geared toward the player. Personally, I love seeing guys make a tackle and getting loud and angry.

3. Not even a little.

4. Maybe. I think it depends on the situation.
