Beechwood Band playing while Covington Catholic was on offense

Featured Replies

That quote is from the KHSAA handbook, NOT a rule book.

Sounds like it may be up to the home management/officials to decide what to do. I've heard of bands being sent out of the stands, I've heard of 15 yd unsportsmanlike penalties, I've heard of schools being fined. Someone more knowledgeable than me may have a better answer, but what I posted above is STRAIGHT from the KHSAA...nothing else added to it.

Ok, so the KHSAA handbook says bands shouldn't play during live play.

But what is the penalty if they do? Are Ky refs allowed to flag the band for a 15 yard penalty?

Still trying to understand the rule which I don't think has been definitively explained.

I just don't understand what the big deal is. I remember 2 years ago, every time Cooper was about to kick an extra point a Conner fan would blow an air horn.

Stuff happens. This didn't seem to slow CCH down any.

Oh come on, Colonel nation needs something to complain about when the team is playing well...

I know you like rules and all, so...

Lol, sad. You just can't stop searching for any post from someone who you disagree with in other threads so you can make juvenile comments.

1) The band is not to play or cheers be given when the ball is alive

Since someone else brought it up first. Not Guru's but a quote from someone else.

Think outside what does it matter? It obviously didn't affect the game other than some people complaining. Indoor sports it's different as everything echoes. Cooper vs Conner last year CoopSquad had a horn they blew during free throws. Kid missed every one, was blown three times then official warned them and it wasn't blown again.

Yeah, I don't have to search too hard...it is a discussion board after all. But overall you get the picture. Today, you get a star

Hello all,

My name is Joe Craig, and I am the band director at Beechwood. Let me first start off by apologizing for any rules violations that occurred during the Cov. Cath. FB game last Friday. That was certainly not our intention. Our student section has a "Make Some Noise" sign that they flash when they want a lot of crowd noise. Several of the students asked if the band would make some noise as well when they flashed the sign. I wasn't sure if we were allowed to do so, but I thought that we would try it and if we weren't allowed an official would tell us so. At no point did any official tell us to stop, so I assumed it was ok to do so. Now that I'm aware of the rules in this regard, rest assured we will not do this again. My apologies to anyone offended by our actions, our intention was simply to be highly involved in a great game with a great rivalry between our two great schools.

Now, to the several posts regarding the band's support of the Beechwood FB team and the like. For those who have posted stating these opinions, I'm truly sorry that you have these thoughts and opinions about our band program and our students. Since I feel that both positive and negative opinions of the band reflect upon my leadership, all I will say is that if you are truly part of the Beechwood family, let's get together and meet to talk about these issues. Call me, email me, set up a time to meet at school or after school. While we may not agree on everything, I would hope that we can agree that Beechwood is an awesome school with amazing students. Whether they be on the Football Field, the Band Field, or the Soccer Field, or even if they're not on the field, they are all Beechwood Students, and as such are not only worthy but demanding of our respect. As a 10 year member of the Beechwood faculty, I've grown to love this place very much, and since I teach most all of these kids at some point (i teach all the 5th and 6th graders at Beechwood each year) I can tell you with absolute certainty that while my job title is Band Director here at Beechwood, I love watching all of our students excel. And I know I'm not alone in this regard, I would say our teacher, coaches, and administration all feel the same way.

Again, my door is always open. I love talking to parents/students here at Beechwood, and if you're interested I'd be more than happy to talk with you anytime.

Sincerely,

Joe Craig

Great first post Joe. Hope you are around for many more.

Yo, Joe.

No harm done by the band. This falls under a "technicality" that really has no negative impact on the game.

Keep up the good work. I love a strong high school marching band. You cats work hard.

Joe Craig is a class act and a loved member of the Beechwood family. Great post!

Great post, Joe and welcome to BGP!

I commend you for taking the time to come here and plead your case! Good luck to the Beechwood band and thanks for helping to shape the minds/talents of students you teach/direct.

For an avatar, Mr. Craig should take a picture of all the state and national championship trophies the Beechwood band has won under his leadership. Probably not his style, but it would be cool to see them all.
