Isn't that a huge upset? Did Jefferson and Bieger play for Beechwood?

 

Bieger is not playing on the 8th grade team.

Is there a schedule posted online? I looked at nkmsaa.org but I did not see a schedule.

I believe 3 7th graders play 8th grade ball. What grade is Bieger? My understanding he is playing frosh.

Ockerman any good now that they have those 3 new kids.

Summit View 8th Grade has several nice players. Nick Brann, John Hensley, Evan Dearborn, and Jeremy Davis.

 

Brann is very athletic, scrappy, strong and determined. His skill set is growing and he works hard all year long. He plays with a motor uncommon to most players in the league.

 

Dearborn is quickly becoming a skilled inside/outside guy. He's shooting the ball with more consistency, and if he continues to use his body inside, he finishes well around the rim. He is also a very heady player. Smart.

 

Jon Hensley plays with an attitude. And, I mean that in a good way. He has a swagger that allows him to play with no fear. He sees the floor well, has a good handle, and really started becoming more of a leader last season. His defense also improved. He's long and strong.

 

Jeremy Davis is a kid that has grown exponentially since 6th grade. He is a kid that does everything well, but nothing over the top. He's smart, fairly athletic, and will do anything you need him to do. A real utility player that immediately makes any team better.

 

Summit View is now an academy and has changed their mascot. The middle school combined with the p-5 Summit View elementary, and they are known now, collectively, as the Summit View Academy Royals.

 

Note: this team is not necessarily the same as last year. Hensley is currently injured and likely won't play the first couple of weeks. Also, 1 player moved, and 1 didn't try out. They added 2 new guys to the team, one is about 6'2. Raw, but learning quickly. Both will add depth and competitiveness to the roster.

 

This team also has some streaky good shooters, and solid bench play.

In the 8th grade:

 

Pius has Michael Mayer. The young man can really, really play. In my opinion, the most skilled, overall best BIG in the league in 8th grade. Very good, coachable kid. They also have a few nice guards that can shoot and play good, fundamental basketball. With Maile as the coach, they will be more than formidable, that's for sure.

 

Highlands has Huddleston and Salter patrolling the paint and with streaky shooting, tough guards they will again compete at the top of the league. I look forward to seeing them and SVA battle it out on that side of the bracket.

 

Conner had Hicks move up, which was probably the right decision with a few other kids not trying out/playing. Hicks can really play and moving him up will allow him to get into his Dad's system sooner, making him a great leader of the future of Conner (because he CAN PLAY! Not because he is the coaches son). This MS team will likely take a couple of steps back from 7th grade.

 

Camp Ernst and Kevin Centers are coming for each of the 4 above (SVA included). They are a good team, stuck in a really good division, with a lot of talent in this grade level. They work hard and have a really nice core of players.

 

The two teams I'm most interested to see are IHM and Ockerman. IHM was solid last year, but much like Camp Ernst, fell victim to a really good division and grade level conference. They competed with, if not beat a few teams in this league. If Ockerman's transfers work out they will also be really improved. They had nice guard play last year and they are typically pretty well coached.

 

I won't mention much about Beechwood and St. Agnes because they don't play in the large division, but both are really solid. BWood should run away with the small school division without much competition.

Agree with most of what you stated. Beechwood is trying hard to schedule as many of the BIG schools as possible as "non-league" games, so that we can play the most competitive schedule possible for our kids. But, scheduling for open dates, and availability has been tough. So far, in the early season, we have already been able to play IHM, Woodland, Conner, Gray, Campbell County "A" team, Summit View (2x), Ockerman, and a scrimmage at Pius. We are working towards games with Highlands & Summit View (when Hensley is healthy.) And, we will play St Agnes later in the season.

 

That might be as good a "non-league" schedule as possible. But, we will play anyone that wants to play & we will play at their gym.

Exactly... But remember dad is varsity coach and NO boy in bo. Co. In 25 yrs has ever had the opportunity to move up from 8th grade... I could name several in the past 25 yrs not given the opportunity!

Great for him, he is the smartest one in 25 years in Boone County to realize there is a player that should be moved up and took the time to figure out how to make it happen and made it happen, don't hate the coach or kid, learn from it an move on, some people get so jealous of other athletes, they become hateful, just respect the decision and hope other kids take advantage if they have an opportunity, to single out an 8th grade athlete and his dad says a lot about you!!

One thing Boone County administration may want to look at is letting a middle school boy move up to freshman basketball. If the boy tries out and doesn't make it then he would need to sit out that year. This might help reduce the amount of boys trying out due to their parents thinking they are that good. I'm in favor of letting players who have the talent move up, it benefits them and the team. No one wants their son to get cut or lose playing time but in the end it is going to happen. My oldest is on the freshman team at Conner and Jared would have started on that team. I think the rule currently in place states that a middle school player must play JV or Varsity. Back in the day the freshman team was at the middle school in most if not all of Boone County schools, may be time to look at the rules and update them.
