New football playoff format would pit Louisville schools...

Featured Replies

So many are going to be so proud of "HOW FAR OUR BOYS WENT" or "WE FINALLY GOT OVER THAT HUMP"....

hogwash.

Heck we are already seeing that in the "just win" "no road is easy" stuff from areas that don't have to play the Big three till the Championship. When you know if their teams had to play Male twice, St. X and Trinity all in a row under the same mysterious draw situation they would be flabbergasted and calling foul. Which is why they are calling out the Manual posters enmass, because that is how they would react and that is what they are reading into our post, even when that is not what we are saying.

Everyone already knows that you will have a tough road to be the champions and that road goes through three teams, teams that Manual and other Louisville teams were already going to have to go through that has not changed, but this way of doing it limits the amount of exposure to other programs across the state and puts the best games up front instead of later on eliminating almost any parity. The fact is I would still be against it even if it was another area that had to make that run because it basically weakens the playoffs.

If you want to use analogies, I can.

If my house was a nice new house that cost a lot of money and helped keep property rates in the area high (i.e. playoff wins), I can see where I would be upset.

If my house was just like any other house on the block (i.e. no recent playoff wins against the opposite district), it's kind of hard to argue against the highway.

Are you refering to Manual?

They've won 2 of the last 3 playoff games against R2D3. And the time before that was a loss to PRP, which currently sits in their district... so in recent history, Manual is batting .750 against teams outside of Louisville in the playoffs. :thumb:

Of course you could....just like you could pick some 3A teams that COULD DO IT......the fact is, you couldn't pick a 4A team THAT COULD, anywhere.

Thanks, Bro.

I would just like to state that I think that this is an interesting format. Having followed 4-A most of my life, I personally believe that in order to be the best...you have to play the best...and Im not just referring to playing better and tougher competition, but I am also referring to a team must personally play their best each week to be the best.

My feeling in all this is that if you are going to win the state championship, you have to be ready to play every game. Its that simple. If you go out and beat St. X, Trinity & Male to make it to the Semis and then get beat by someone like South Laurel, or whoever...then so be it. That night...you werent the best. Games are not won on paper or in forums or in barber shop meetings. Games are won on the fields. Just like it could easily be argued that the Confederacy should have beaten the Union Army because they had a better general, or better equipment, or whatever. But in the end...they didnt win. Likewise, football is about preparing for every night...from the coaches who have to make adjustments, to players who have to prepare physically and mentally to play. Winners rise above adversity and plow through woods...losers take the easy road and make excuses.

I believe that it would be nice to see for a few years at least...the best of Louisville take on the best of the state.

And I am sorry...I am a Louisville guy...but I think it has to be remembered...this is a STATE championship...not a Louisville Championship. I think the Louisville schools should battle it out...take the winner and let them take on the rest. Its not right to make the schedule adjust just because Louisville has 20+ 4-A schools and everyone else doesnt. Take the best of louisville and let them play the rest and hopefully they will represent us well. If not...well, then someone else was better.

Bottom line is....state champioships are for the kids, the players, the athletes. They dont care how much money goes into the gate. If this were about money...i would stop watching high school football. This HAS to be about whats fair and right for ALL athletes. They are ones playing the game...not the ADs and boosters and KHSAA board.

So says a guys whos team has an easy draw!

No doubt our draw is easier but we weren't complaining before when our district was opposite Trinity's. Heck, Boone Co has been a bigger obstacle to us than Trinity.:creepy:

Of course you could....just like you could pick some 3A teams that COULD DO IT......the fact is, you couldn't pick a 4A team THAT COULD, anywhere.

So who are the 3A teams in that DISTRICT that could do it or have ever done it?

Thats what the debate has been about from the Manual folks - that they 7 teams from the X/M district have no shot 0 right?

if someone can please show how this is an incorrect comparison i will drop it.

I have agreed that this a tough deal for manual, et al and acknowledged that perhaps its simply to avoid the split. No one seems capable of acknowledging ANYTHING beyond Lou's situation

No it hasn't been that they can't win. It has been that the road is disporpotionatly HARDER than it is for anyone else in the state. Why is it so hard to understand that we don't like getting shafted.
And you're not a child. Why is this thread bringing that out in so many people?

ram2003,

If you look look through the thread - I am not the one who repeatedly keeps making direct personal comments about others. I debate the facts and specifically on what someone posts here. If anyone cannot keep their comments focused on that, its not my problem.

the person above the postyou referenced is the one who chose to increase his personal remarks to pointedly telling me what I can or cannot post on here.

FYI: NOT GONNA HAPPEN !

I havent acted like that towards anyone and wont accept it in return.

With all due respect Woody you have twisted the arguements of every poster you have disagreed with, in a manner that appears to be intentionally pointed at aggrivating them.

Maybe that isn't the case but it sure looks that way.

Again I will respond with stuff I have already stated you just chose to read over. You have my opinion completely sideways. I think this will weaken the competition because now only three teams outside of Louisville are going to play against what is year in and out the toughest competition headed to the playoffs, which means less exposure state wide to that level of competition, also the Louisville teams not in the big three are going to have less exposure to more equal competition from out in the state as well. Louisville teams not in the big three are still competitive against many good 4A teams out there like Warren Central, Meade Co. Nelson Co. John Hardin, Dixie, Scott Co. Dunbar, but it is unlikely that we will ever know this season unles they play regular season how the nonbig three Lousivile teams stack up. Sometimes the Louisville teams are over rated, sometime the teams out in the State are, but now the whole lot will only be judged against the big three, and that is sad to me. Also I think that witout that parity and equal competition Football will become less and less interesting in public schools over the past ten years I have seen Manual grow from having NO student interest to having great crowds, and I think that many Louisville schools could grow the sport if there was more parity.

Over time this means less exciting games and the same effect of St. X or Trinity winning the title. By removeing a buffer game from the Louisville competition you are decreasing the possiblity that one of the Louisville area teams that are in the top ten talent wise may catch lightning in a bottle the same as say Scott or Dixie or Meade Co. have in the past and knock them out and advance successfully, now the Louisville teams other than the big 3 are going to have to do that week after week and that changes the dynamic of the game, giving schools with more depth an advantage. It is like having to play the top ten schools in the same regional NCAA bracket instead of seeding them. By playing that district method you are going to limit whole areas to less practice only one school in the district is going to advance reguardless of talent level. That may not be of vital importance but when you consider that prime time to bring on the freshmen, it is a factor. So what this seems to do is make the rich richer and the poor poorer at first and then it will lower the bar across the board in MY OPINION. That will effect parity.

As far as the 3A teams you are questioning me on, I am dismissing nothing, I just don't know enough about that situation to make an educated statement so instead of showing my ignorance and sticking my nose into a topic I know very little about I will pass on that. I know about 4A and I will stick to what I know about. Manual' situation has little to do with my opinion on this topic, to be honest I am not expecting anything of Manual this season we had a huge turn over and it will be a surprise this year to me what shakes out. Manual is the where I am from so it will be the central point of referance for me but not the reason I feel the way I feel. Manual may do well or not even make the playoffs this season, so that has nothing to do with my distain for this idea. This is more likely to effect PRP than Manual this year I would expect.

Ram95,

I just want to say..........

that is a fantastic explanation of your view. I have been wondering why we were not getting anywhere. Give me some time to read through these threads and sI'll ee if I can respond or if youve just completely changed my mind;)

well lets not go that far.

Woody Jr

Here's how it's incorrect.

We're saying that in ANY format, any team that would have to go through the Big 3 three or four games in a row (mostly if not all on the road) would have no shot. That there is no set of comparable teams in AAA that provide an impossible road block like this when set in a row. There ARE teams that couldn't beat HHS, CovCath and Rock three weeks in a row, and I'm sure there are several in their district. But there are teams out there in the state of Kentucky that could do it. A team did it last year.

NO Team in the state of Kentucky is capable of winning agaisnt the road that Manual will have set in front of them. It has nothing to do about which specific teams have this impossible task in front of them... trade them out with any team in the state, including one of those Big 3 members, and it's still impossible. That's what we're saying, that's the difference.

With all due respect Woody you have twisted the arguements of every poster you have disagreed with, in a manner that appears to be intentionally pointed at aggrivating them.

With corresponding respect RRR,

Disagree. My experience on here is that when I stick to the facts (yes - as I see them) and focus on exactly what someone types, then some folks get frustrated and get emotional, either posting personal comments or accusing me of something.

Rather than post that I "have twisted the arguments" which demonstrates nothing but your opinion(which is as fair as mine) - I would only ask that instead you show what I typed and how it twisted something. I mean thats only fair isnt it? If you and I have our wires crossed then we need to focus on exactly what is said and then go back and try to express our personal view in better detail so others can understand what we mean. That is what Ive tried to do.

as I have noted, i believe I have acknowledged certain points of others along the way and noted they might be right (a KHSAA idea to avoid the split). I agreed that the trail set up for Manual, et al is vicious THIS year.

I have debated anyone presenting it as ifs that way every year.

I have debated anyone suggesting that Manual et al have so much worse a road than some others (my example has been Cov Holmes et al who have good programs but ALWAYS have to face Highlands, Cov cath, then say Lex Cath (now), Rock/Bell?? just to get to the finals) They havent been able to do that ridiculous path so far despite some good teams and perhaps someone there thinks its been unfair to them for MANY years - but i havent heard about it. Perhaps b/c you have had it the other way you feel a change is "unfair" but no one says the other way is the right way.

I also understand Lou 4A folks thinking the field should be split in half geographically. I think it is "at least" as reasonable to think it's silly to have teams that are maybe 25 miles apart?? believe they should deserve to be opposite each other for eternity (so to speak) personally I'd like to see a rotation of plans periodically - including Louisville against the state. I think there is nothing wrong with that being one of the plans used. None are 100% correct - we just try to consider the WHOLE state and ALL 4 classes in our discussions IMO

Woody Jr

02Ram54,

So is it your argument basically that before a playoff bracket is setup, that the powers to be(KHSAA) examine the strength of teams and then make sure that those teams are not aligned in a way that some other team would have to play them several weeks in a row?

That seems to be your argument as I see it - do I have it correct before I proceed?

Woody Jr

^ His argument is that you should not have to play (please allow an NCAA comparison) 3 1-seeds to get to an 8 seed, and then a 9...

Let me put it this way:

If changing the brackets with an eye on the Big 3 were unacceptable, we'd be playing under last years format...

Since the powers that be are already rigging the game, I don't see why I should be apologetic for suggesting that a format is unfair.
