It was early November 2012 and both teams were still playing in the playoffs. No contract had been signed but they had a verbal agreement, which is normally good enough among honorable coaches until a written contract could be signed later. It had been a great series the past 4 years, and early in the scheduling process Coach Hart and Coach Haywood had agreed to extend it another 2 years. Belfry went ahead with scheduling based on that agreement.

 

On October 4 Coach Hart publicly stated how much he loved the series because it prepared them for the playoffs, and he planned to extend it in this Independent article,. Then the first week of November, Coach Hart backed out and said the Tomcats were not going to be as stront and they were going to schedule somebody not as good as Belfry.

 

Of course, it was Hart's right to make that decision, but it was very bad timing and it hurt Belfry in the wake. Maybe he knew he was on the way out and he wanted to help the new coach out with an easier schedule. I lost some respect for him after he made those public comments but then privately did the exact opposite from what he stated in that article.

 

How does it apply to this thread? Scheduling matters. Ashland needs an opponent like Belfry to prepare them for Johnson Central and the playoffs and replacing them with Sheldon Clark did not fit that bill. In the end, it all worked out. Belfry beefed up their schedule and went on to win the next two state championships in Class AAA. Ashland got two easy wins against Sheldon Clark by a combined score of 98-16, but the Tomcats lost to Johnson Central twice by a combined score of 84-14 and lost in round 2 of their playoffs.

 

Personally I hate it that Belfry and Ashland no longer play. It was a great series with some great games, and your right, it is a game that would help Ashland prepare for JC. Ashland has a solid schedule though, however Belfry and JC are a lot alike, moreso than teams Ashland has replaced Belfry with.

 

On the flip side of things, i understand why they dropped Belfry when they did. Strategic scheduling goes a long way in building moral in the years you know your gonna be down and limiting injuries to give your kids a fighting chance for the playoffs. Do I think it was right, no. If I give someone my word its as good as having an attorney write up a contract. Coach Hart probably just looking out for "his" kids, which is much akin to what Mattney is doing at JC, IMO. I think both coach Hart and Mattney have made some mistakes during that process, but it is what it is. Its hard for me to hold a grudge against any coach that truly cares about the kids they coach, whether I like their other attributes or not.

Yea people get tired of playing you, one your really good, and two he gets caught up in breaking records, and other antics, that people consider classless. So over time people Just do not want to fool with you. On top of that he seems to always have something to say, or complain about.

@JDEaston. I'm with @Watusi on this one. In my opinion it was very weak and embarrassing for Ashland to back out of the contract with Belfry a couple of years ago. The Belfry game has always been a great game on the field, and a great money maker for both schools since both schools always travel well on the road. I would love to know the reason behind that move.

I hope Central can pull off a championship this season. The door is open with 4 teams switching class. yes very weak district and schedule. Belfry game is last game of season I can see both Teams resting kids for playoffs. Strength of schedule....this helps the team, coaching, play calling etc. I saw a panick in some past playoffs with TOs being used and play calling. JC is mainly a run based O that can run clock. Throughout season if a team doesn't have a few close calls and games how can they improve or know how they stand. I feel for JC on trying to get teams to play but when you take a knee on 2nd down so your kicker can try a 50 yd Fg??? Or few years back you run up the score with a RB. Coaches talk. A scrimmage during week 1 what does a scrimmage tell you? Play someone week one. Gate money... A Lot turned out Friday for the black gold scrimmage. Not a good turn out last year for the charter school.

Could it possibly be, when it comes to Matney, that it's tough to have respect for someone who doesn't have respect for anyone else in the profession? He tends to make mockery of games at times and then goes out publicly putting down other programs who won't play them when the fact could be that other teams may not mind playing JC but it's their coach they want nothing to do with. I actually heard that he once ran a kid backwards a few yards and had him fall down, just so it would give his kicker the yardage to attempt a state record. This while being up BIG on the scoreboard. I think it may have been against Greenup?
