I believe Ironton chose not to continue it's brief series with JC because of a new conference affiliation. When available, Ironton, Wheelersburg, Cabell Midland, Huntington High, and Wayne(WV) would give JC a good fight most years. Especially Ironton and Wheelersburg at their best. Johnson Central would potentially provide big time Harbin points for those Ohio schools.

 

No doubt, there was even a year or two where Ironton/Ashland didn't play due to the same situation and those two schools have a long standing tradition.

 

All of those teams you mentioned would be good options for JC, dont forget about the Portsmouth teams either. You could even add Spring Valley to the list, along with a handful of Charleston area teams. Again, a potential problem is that of the teams mentioned, most have long standing traditional intrastate or out of district opponents already in place. In general those opponents are also much closer than Paintsville. Ironton for example, has playedor will play recent games with Ashland, Russell, and Raceland. Those are big money games for each school involved and is a 15 minute drive tops to any of those schools.

 

I guess what I'm getting at, there are plenty of options for Matney if he really wants to beef up his schedule. However it will be hard for him to do it on his terms of a home and home game.

I think as posted before in this thread taking in Bowl games in week 0 and in week one could help beef up the schedule.

I agree about the bowl games, that honestly is likely their best option. However Mattney mentioned in the article that they have a policy of only playing home and home games. I guess he doesn't realize they could make the same amount of money by finding a good bowl to attend.

That brings some sense to the conversation. The only thing I can really add at this point is that lc were in down years at the time also, I believe. In that sense it would make some sense to drop a much larger school and try to establish yourself again.
