There isn't a coach anywhere that won't spin things to his advantage to help build his team up. Saying teams are afraid of scheduling them is coaching 101.

Ashland has played wv teams regularly, some of the top teams in wv in fact. I imagine JC could work something out with the traditional powers in wv, though they do seem to have missed that boat as the teams I'm speaking of have been locked in with traditional opponents for some time now. It would still be more likely for them to find a good wv program to play than a good Ohio program.

 

The other option for Mattney is to try and get involved in early season bowl games. Most if them offer a good payout on the gate. That would be what I would do if I were him. Or he could just continue complaining that no one wants to come and play a home and home at paintsville and continue losing money that he could be making if he would change his policy.

No doubt, plus you'd have to rent a charter bus and spend the night, assuming there is enough local lodging available to do that. The expenses likely outweigh the nostalgia of playing JC for most teams.

GW and SV are the only ones I know that will schedule anyone 4A and up. Not easy getting anyone to play from WV when they know they are going to get beat.

What about Southwestern VA teams? Seems Bell County played more than a few in their time? Richlands anyone?

Belfry actually has a pretty competitive schedule every year. I wouldn't bark up that tree personally, Belfry has played some tough teams for as long as I can remember.

Their are teams in WVA that would play JC in my opinion. S. Charleston, Stonewall Jackson, Spring Valley Huntington High and even Beckley all 3A largest class in WVA and close enough to play a Home and Home. Problem is scheduling and if any of those teams need a game.
