JDEaston, trust me, CBDV knows Belfry's schedule and he is right about playing Gallia Academy in Gallipolis, OH and Christian Academy of Knoxville the past two years. And he is also right, they agreed to travel to Southwestern two years in a row in order to fill a schedule.

 

Why? Belfry was left with gaping holes when East Ridge dropped out of the district, and then Ashland backed out of an agreement with Belfry so that they could find somebody to play that they could beat easily (Sheldon Clark).

It's been said before but this is one example where the switch from four-class to six-class has been negative. In the old system most districts were six or seven teams meaning you only had to schedule three or four (at most five) non-district games. It's much easier for power programs to find four takers than it is to find seven.

Totally normal. I agree with you.

As far as a bowl type deal for JC, I mentioned that earlier in the thread. In my opinion Mattney and crew would have a better shot at filling a full schedule if they participated in an early season bowl game, rather than insisting on home and home games. After all expenses I imagine they would break even or even earn more money than a home and home would with a team that is a great distance away (Canada for example) but what do I know.

That is a lot of travel for a 3A school. Part of the problem is we are isolated, and part of the problem is there are tons of teams who simply won't play Belfry.

 

Johnson Central is in the same boat, but it is magnified. They are more easily accessible, but they are a better team and I'm sure it is hard to get teams to come there to play them. On top of that, Matney is not very well liked and that keeps a lot of teams away too. I'm not saying anybody is scared of playing them, but I understand the reasons why they have a hard time with scheduling.

 

And yes, I still have a very poor opinion of the way Ashland backed out of that contract and the reason they gave for doing it. Dropping Belfry in November when scheduling was done was a real problem for the Pirates and the reason they had to go so far away (Gallipolis and Knoxville) to find games.

I get everything your saying. Both teams are isolated, which makes it hard for teams to justify traveling there to play them.

 

For whatever reason Belfry has done a much better job of filling their schedule with quality teams than JC has. The thread is about JC, so Ill focus on that. IMO, their beat bet to beef up their schedule is to play or create their own early season bowl game.

 

But if you ask Mattney, that's apparently not possible because they have a policy of only playing "home and home contracts." I guess I'm ignorant because there are multiple teams they have played that were home games for JC but JC never returned the favor.

There isn't a coach anywhere that won't spin things to his advantage to help build his team up. Saying teams are afraid of scheduling them is coaching 101.

No way you travel two years...unless the other team covers all expenses and pays you the money you would make from a home game.

As far as your comment goes, I don't feel the same way as you or Mattney. I just don't get that teams are "scared" to play JC. In my opinion any team that says no to them probably has sound reasonsbfor doing so. It's easy to forget that money drives everything. Unfortunately that's as big of a factor as anything as far as JC finding quality opponents to beef up their schedule. It has nothing to do with teams being afraid to play you.

Yes, money does drive everything, which is why I am guessing teams are not lining up to pay for a trip to JC.
