Hayward Fault: Major Earthquake In San Francisco Expected 'Any Day Now' : News : Headlines & Global News

Panic has erupted throughout social media, as earlier reports stated that San Francisco will experience a major earthquake "any day now."

The story came out after a 4.0 magnitude earthquake on the Hayward Fault rocked the Bay Area on Tuesday.

A U.S. Geological Survey scientist said that the fault is expected to result in a major earthquake "any day now" and advised Bay Area residents to be prepared, according to CBS San Francisco. The story quickly picked up on Facebook and became viral, spreading panic on social media and fear among the Bay Area residents.

The story was apparently sourced from the local news wire Bay City News, which reported that "while a 2008 report put the probability of a 6.7-magnitude or larger earthquake on the Hayward-Rodgers Creek Fault system over the next 30 years at 31 percent, Brocher said the reality is a major quake is expected on the fault 'any day now,'"

I think that was a pre-cursor...it may be "Click Bait" as you say...I saw it with several other news stories.

The truth is it is impossible to accurately predict an earthquake. Saying "any day now" is scare tactics.

Haven't there been exactly zero proven cases in which a scientist or group of scientists has successful predicted an earthquake? My understanding is that most seismologists and geologists don't even believe prediction is currently possible.

True...of course it wasn't long ago they couldn't predict with any likelihood when a tornado was more likely than not.

So maybe there are some advances that us in non quake land aren't up on...but you are right, he's just making an educated guess.

The New Madrid Fault is the one everyone should lookout for the big one. If there is a major quake there it would cause more damage and lost of life than one in California. Back in the early 1800's it had a major quake that formed Reelfoot Lake and also made the Mississippi River flow nortward instead of towards the south. The effects of such a quake could be felt as far away as Cincinnati.

I learned about this in grade school in St. Louis.
