My son did not study that much until the night before the written test. Pretty much said, "There are a lot of stupid people out there with a license so it can't be that hard."

Not everybody has access to an interstate highway within their county.

I think less than 10% is probably the right number when you look at the number of cars you come in contact with. It's the 1 or 2 cars that are idiots that you remember, not the hundreds driving correctly that you never pay any attention to.

Totally agree with so many of the posts in the thread. To expand on a few of those points:

 

1. Hoosiers, yes. If there is a state full of worse drivers than Indiana, I haven't been there (and I've been to a lot of states.) Ohioans, I never understood the complaint. Good and bad, like everywhere else.

 

2. I've said for years, and likely posted on here that part of receiving social security or medicare should be an agreement to retake your driving test every five years. Waay to many of the bad drivers I encounter are those LAWildcat described. Flip side is, what do you want them to do? They're still active and still have places they have to go (doctors, grocery, pharmacy). How are they supposed to get there?

 

3. Cell phone distractions are becoming epidemically dangerous. I see them with both sexes, though women are the vast majority. I promise you the technology is there to disable texting, or cell phones all together while a car is in motion.

 

4. So many people have hit on the turn signal thing. It's more than a courtesy, it's vital to safety and traffic flow. It's also a lost art. Sadly, I see many police cruisers act as if their car in not equipped with such equipment.

 

Example of the day for turn signal importance; I'm sitting at a red light hoping to turn right on red, with several cars behind me. Car approaching has no signal on yet suddenly turns right at my intersection. You just caused a chain reaction of inconveniences to X number of people.

 

5. Drivers who will not turn right on red. I always wonder if they have a body in the trunk and don't want to take any chances, because no one can be this stupid. If their is no sign next to the light, it's legal (and expected once upon a time.)

I said this in an earlier post. Coming from a state that does have driver's Ed in schools, it just baffles me that KY doesn't. You hit the nail on the head....many kids are being taught how to drive by people that either aren't good drivers or may be good drivers, but not good teachers.

Kind of off topic here. But anybody that was Grandfathered in with a CDL Driver License should have to retest! I got my CDL's a few years back and have given my very own Company drivers a small Quiz on what's on the Exam from time to time. More than half would fail the written exam today. It's actually disturbing how stupid some people are.

 

Another thing we actually do is make sure our drivers use the Medical Exam testing facility that we choose. You wouldn't believe some of the Medical Certs that have been turned in from their doctors over the years. I was reading one of the reports about 5 years ago and the Doctor that the driver was using was also a Vet!.....LOL! Wait what? That's a true story!

Absolutely, unequivocally no way the answer is less than 10% of those on the road driving shouldn't be. It HAS to be higher than that. I bet 10% of total drivers on the road could be argued of just older/elderly people that no longer have either the physical capability (can't see, horribly slow reaction time, etc) or the mental capability to drive...and in some cases maybe both.

 

Heck, I work/have worked with a LOT of people that shouldn't have a license. Working for the state and traveling the way I do I have had the opportunity to drive with many different people. it's absolutely scary how some people just can't drive for many different reasons. And one of those reasons is, some just don't seem to care, I think that might be the scariest reason of all.

I believe any one of us who think we are great drivers can fall into this category on any given day. Many of us don't get enough sleep or have distracting thoughts on our minds when we take to the road. All it takes is one unfortunate moment to mess up our own lives or the lives of others around us.

Next teenager texting and failing to stop at the stop sign by Krogers in Independence is going to have a lot of explaining to do.
