Louisville Bucket List

Featured Replies

So my wife and I were at "Resurfaced" last night. For those unfamiliar...Resurfaced is a non-profit organization that has taken a vacant and unused space on Main Street in downtown Louisville and has organized weekly events during June as an effort to simply get people together to enjoy the city and socialize. The space is pretty awesome, actually. It's an area formerly occupied by four buildings built in the mid-to-late 1800s. The buildings have been demolished, but the building facades have been shored up and are still standing in place. Otherwise, it's just essentially an open-air biergarten of sorts, surrounded by vintage brick walls. Really cool place to be outside.

So anyway, while we were sitting there and listening to the band they had playing last night, my wife told me that Resurfaced was definitely a Louisville bucket list item as far as she was concerned. Got us to talking about what items would make up a true "Louisville Bucket List".

The only particular rule we used was that restaurants had to be kept to a minimum, and could only be included if they had a very particular something that made them special...as in, something more than just, "they have the best [fill in the blank] at that restaurant".

The restaurants we made exceptions for:

-Get a steak at Jack Fry's

-Get a hot brown at The Brown Hotel

-Get the seafood platter out on the deck at Mike Linnig's

Play pool at the Backdoor

St James Art Fair

Hike Cherokee Park

Take a boat on the river.

Eat at Captains Quarters from your boat.

Get a shave at Derby City Chop Shop

And the BIGGEST omission:

Watch the finish line of Ironman Louisville.

The restaurant I would make an exception for is Seviche. Anthony Lamas is a highly praised chef.

Forgive me for also adding a restaurant, but Vincenzos is a beautiful classic restaurant in Louisville.

Walking through Gault House at Christmas time is also a treat.

Watch a concert at the Palace. One of the more beautiful theaters I've had the pleasure of attending a show at, and I do so every chance I get.

Listen to the Kentucky All State choir singing in the Galt House just before bedtime.

Catch a Broadway show at the Arts Center.

Breakfast at Highland Morning.

Do, or attempt, the Bambi Walk

Take a picnic dinner and see a Shakespeare in the Park production.

I echo St. James Art Fair

I also echo hiking Cherokee Park, I suggest beginnjng just before dawn, either making a stop at, or starting at the top of Doggie Hill. Be still there and watch the sun rise. It was one of my favorite things to do with Lucky.

See the Louisville skyline from the top of Iroquois Park.

Browse the biannual Friends of the Library book sale.

Hike Jefferson Memorial Forest.

I love Highland Morning. Good call.

Tiny spot, great food. And even if there is a wait, the coffee shop next door is fantastic too.

Days. Really nice people there. They used to let me knock on the door and order my coffee through the door when I was walking my dog. They'd bring it out to me and everything.
