Patriots Punishments

Featured Replies

In today's press releases the Patriots expressed their absolute outrage at the attacks and insinuations they would bend the rules.

In their second release, they announced the signing of a free agent quarterback, Dom Grady, pictured in this link, who they expect to start the first four games of the year:

PEople are missing an important part of this punishment. Goodell has said that he will make repeat offenders an example. Well with the teams refusal to cooperate with the investigation and as the NFL has said in the letter from Troy Vincent that they basically did all they could to impede the investigation, well Goodell is making an example out of the Patriots as a repeat offender. Which he should do. The patriots are an organization who will always be labeled cheaters as they have been caught numerous times doing.

I agree HB. The bulk of this punishment is due to failure to fully cooperate and on the Patriots organization side previous issues

If the Browns and Falcons are caught next year deflating footballs would they get the same sanctions as NE since they had sanctions this year? If the Bengals get caught would it be less sanctions?

There's a phrase often used in NCAA investigations that comes to mind.

Lack of institutional control.

Can you imagine if the NFL used the same standard for its own Commissioners office on how it bungled the Ray Rice incident? Their crack team of investigators could not get the tape inside the elevator that others could get??

How much cooperation did they need? They interviewed McNally 4 times, Brady once and the Jastremski fella. They took McNally and Jastremski's phones as well. Brady gets suspended for 4 games for not giving up his phone and everyone is cool with that? Brady is suspended for 4 games because of Spygate? Something he had no part of. The Patriots lose draft picks and are fined 1,000,000 dollars because it is "more than probable" that Brady had a hand in DeflateGate?

Is this real??????

Yep. I don't think Brady has ever been afoul of anything in his career. It's really easy to find ways to hate good looking, rich, successful guys, married to a super model with a bunch of Super Bowl rings.

Yes to both.

I dont know know why it is such a surprise. Goodwill came

out after spy gate and said that very thing. Several interviews this week with current and past players they have said that Goodell when speaking to teams said just that several times in the past that he would not go easy on repeat offenders and would use them as an example

wrong. According to Wells himself, it was reported he had follow up questions for Terry and the team told him he was not to go back and be interviewed again.
My beef with the Pete Rose/Tom Brady comparison is that it is two different sports. There was also hardcore proof that Pete Rose bet on baseball games that he managed. The NFL has proven to be horribly inconsistent with their punishments and we are still waiting for the smoking gun in the Brady situation.

deflated footballs is no where near the offense that betting on a game you are involved in is. The temptation to shave points to beat the point spread etc. completely obliterates the integrity of the game. Brady's offense does not approach this. Hence he isn't suspended from football for life.

"Smoking gun"? There is no smoking gun when there is honor among thieves. Just everybody keep quiet and no one can "prove" anything. This is what we are talking about here--thieves.

A good question I heard this morning. The Patriots and Brady are dug in, practically admitting no wrongdoing. If that is the case, why did the Patriots indefinitely suspend the two employees that doctored the footballs? Are they going in with the position that these two guys acted alone and tossing them under the bus for the entire scandal?

Apparently so, and throwing the two peasants under the bus to protect the Emperor's reputation.

Except for throwing two underlings under the bus when he should man up... (see above) Otto Graham beats Brady in the area of integrity too. :thumb: (old thread)

Smoking gun? Proof beyond a shadow of a doubt? Does anybody honestly think that the two equipment guys decided that the PSI of the footballs when checked by the refs was too high and decided to deflate them afterwards on their own? Does anyone believe that the chief consideration when setting the inflation of the footballs is not the QB's preference? These guys were told to make sure the footballs were set to Brady's preference. Brady told them how he liked the footballs. Had they done otherwise they would no longer be working for the Pats. Turns out, they are no longer working for the Pats because the Pats got caught. "Crime" doesn't pay, unless you make millions of dollars for winning football games, by any means necessary.

That's the beef with Brady. Turns out that 76% of people polled agree with the suspension of Brady. What poll, I am not sure. It was cited on the news this morning.

Perception is reality. The investigator and the NFL felt like the Patriots did not fully co-operate. It doesn't matter what you and I fell. If the investigator wants to talk more and receive more cooperation and you don't give it, then you didn't fully co-operate.

If the Falcons and Browns co-operate fully and honestly, the punishment is half what the Patriots received. If this were just about deflating footballs and it isn't an organization with a bad track record like the Patriots, Browns, Falcons, the QB gets one game at most and the team loses one middle round draft pick.

Cooperating is the key. If the Pats cooperated it wouldn't have been as severe as it is.
