The biggest difference between the boxing match we saw last night (and many for that matter) and MMA/UFC is that those cats in MMA are trying to hurt each other. They may be buddies outside the ring and train together and all that, but when they get in the octagon, they are trying to put the other guy to sleep.

 

People have been making Dancing With The Stars jokes about the fight last night, but that's pretty accurate honestly. Like you said, we want to see folks get knocked out, and boxing hasn't been that way for a while now.

 

Anyone expecting a knockout last night hasn't paid a bit of attention to Floyd or Manny's boxing accolades. They just knew their names.

Tyson was aweosme because he either knocked people out or got knocked out trying. Nobody is like that anymore. Floyd claims he is an entertainer, but nothing about his style is entertaining

I just looked up the current boxing rankings. Surprisingly, there are some names I recognize on there. But there are like 8 divisions. That's way too much.

Manny used to knock people out, and was knocking people out when Mayweather passed on fighting him the first time around. But I don't think either has knocked anyone out in 4 years. Mayweather almost always decisions, and many, many, many people don't trust the decisions in the first place.

My son is 22 and has never been a boxing fan. He did get caught up in the hype for this fight. While he did find this particular match to be a letdown he did find himself watching boxing tapes today.

I agree with a lot of Jumper Dad's post above. The road to irrelevance for boxing in general started with multiple sanctioning organizations. When everyone has a belt, it is hard to figure out who the stars are and create a buzz around them.

Those guys were fighters. By and large, people prefer to watch fighters rather than boxers.

When a sport cares more about promoting then the actual sport, it is no longer a sport. The only way to reel in fans is to make a unified organization like UFC, and create a tiered system where certain fighters have to have each other.

Thanks for posting that. Brought back lots of memories. Round 3 was cool too. Fight was almost stopped because Hagler was cut. Hagler decided that he needed to finish business immediately!

How many PPV's per year pull even close to these numbers? You won't see another do this either, at least not with the boxing world we have today. This fight pulled the numbers it did because of the hype, nothing more. And I would guess the VAST majority of the country feels cheated. Also think about this...this was the biggest fight in boxing in years and it did absolutely nothing for the sport. Boxing is no more popular this morning then it was a week ago.

Boxing is corrupt and the common man identifies much more with MMA.

 

If Boxing has any chance moving forward they need to wipe the slate clean, start a new governing organization with multiple safeguards to avoid corruption, give their product away for free on TV, and push the US Heavyweights into the spotlight.
