I understand why all these transfers happen. People move or parents feel that their kids can be better off at another school. I'm not against the idea of doing what's best for your kid. Heck, as a parent, I'm going to do everything I can to make sure my kid has the opportunity for success in academics and athletics.

 

However......I do feel that the high number of transfers has taken some of the purity out of the high school game. Gone are the days when kids went to a certain school just because they live in the district. The rise of "super programs" around the state have complicated things. What we have now is an environment where the small schools and communities have the deck even more stacked against them. Some schools in Kentucky are basically prep schools and we can debate the "R" word, but kids are still transferring to high profile programs.

 

I dont know the solution. I think the best thought I can come up with is this: If your school is going to field a team and you wish to be competitive, take it seriously. Hire the best coaches, give them the best resources possible, and let the chips fall where they may. Great coaching staffs draw good players. Start there.

Coaches that have kids transfer must look in the mirror at themselves. I dont know anyone involved in this topic. But I see coaches get upset every day about kids leaving to go to other schools. If you can't keep a kid in your own program then you have to look at what you are doing. You may be doing everything right and the kid just wants something different for themselves other than what you are providing.

 

Bottom line if you lose a kid - check what your doing first.

With boys, all parents think their kid will suit up for the 'Cats. With girls, they just want D-I scholarship. Nothing major in the expectation department.

That what the schools get. Can't imagine what KHSAA is getting. All about the money. What about Ky Duke Wisconsin & Michigan St. with the final 4. Pay those kids. The university are making so much money.

KHSAA gets none of the region/district tourney money or regular season gate. Their boat's floated by the Sweet 16.

Dues are dependent on your school's enrollment.

Transferring or attending an out of district school isn't much different today than what it was decades ago. With social media and the explosion of AAU it is more open and knowledgable amongst us all. I still remember BG district kids going to Warren Central and vice versa when I was in school over 20 years ago.

They need to pay attention to UK's roster. A whopping 2 homegrown, KY kids. Maybe 1 or 2 KY high school basketball players a year make it to UK or Louisville combined, and in many years that number is zero.

A guy walks into a bar with carrots in both ears and the bartender asks, "Why do you have carrots in your ears?" The guy screams back, "What, I cant hear you...I've got carrots in my ears!"

The 3rd region tournament is a great example of how regional tournaments should be ran if possible. They've done a great job a seeking sponsorships, and every school gets paid even if they didn't make the regional tournment. It's a win-win for everyone involved, and the kids get to play in a 5000 seat venue on a college sized floor. I hope the 3rd region tournament stays at the Sportscenter forever or until Owensboro builds a new arena one day.

I absolutely get what you're saying, but I think you may be using too broad a brush here. I hang out regularly with a group of parents in this demographic -- we're all happy about the possibility of our boys playing some/any level of college ball and earning scholarship money by doing so. If not, trust me, each of our families has a Plan B. More accurately, we have Plans B through J or K.
