I agree that recruiting happens everyday, but in most cases it's simply the parents or player believing that they are way better than they actually are. Or said player or parents are simply jealous of another kid on there team. I am witnessing it first hand right now from a player that I would have never thought it would come from. But it's his grandparents and his supporters causing most of problems. All because his teammate was voted player of the year.

 

Instead of being happy for him, and using it as motivation to get better, they are just threatening to transfer to another school.

 

I think without a job change and a move then all transfers should be ruled ineligible

I was just noting that region tournaments bring in a lot of money for schools' sports programs. In most cases, the farther your team goes, the bigger your school's share is. This is why it's a big deal to many schools.

Seriously, I can't believe anyone is asking why/how sports are different than band or academics.

Academics in general, I agree. I think the reference rjs4470 is making is more to 'academics' as in "academic team".

 

Kid wants to leave her high school to join a school with a better academic team and people are probably going to applaud her and think it'd be ridiculous to ask that she move if she can get her own transportation.

 

As much as anything else, that's probably the value our society places on academics as compared to sports.

 

I think band is a fair comparison. Both are an extracurricular activity that the school could do without, but are things that give kids with talents for those things a chance to shine and be a part of something bigger than themselves. It's just that there isn't a "Band" section on BGP like there is a "Boy's Basketball" or "Football". I don't really know that the lack of emphasis on it alone is enough to say it's an entirely different category because they share so many qualities.

Everthing you said happens, parent sell house & buy a place in that district kids get legal from KHSAA its that easy.

 

That isn't cheap to do though.

Errr... disadvantageous so long as no one is helping them out with the situation, which I don't really care about if they are honestly doing it for the good of the kid and there aren't strings attached; however, I'm not sure that's always the case though.

Schools yes. What about the KHSAA? The regional tourney's get held every year, regardless of who's in it. And they'll make money. Again, I think this is on the schools. You want to keep your great athletes?? Make your program better. You want to keep your good students?? Hire and retain better teachers. Whatever the case, if the student has different goals than the district, I don't think they should be penalized for going somewhere where their goals can be met. And it seems like we only care when those goals are sports related. Only then is it wrong. I'm just curious why.

Boone County. Not an open enrollment district. HS' in Boone are Boone, Ryle, Cooper, Conner, Walton. Need to have residence in the designated district to attend the school (Walton is Independant so they'll take out of district kids). If I have that wrong, someone let me know.

 

I believe you are right. There are special circumstances where students attend a school out of their district like if a parent works in that district and Walton -Verona definitely takes out of district students.

As long as the moves are legal, the KHSAA will never stop it.
