March 15, 201511 yr You're the one that took it there. Everything has become about racism, sexism and any other -ism you care to name if the person you are critical of has left leaning views. People bash Obama because he's black, people bash Hillary because she's a woman but it's funny how Clarence Thomas or Sarah Palin don't get the same umbrella. I bash Palin because she's one fry short of a Happy Meal.
March 15, 201511 yr I bash Palin because she's one fry short of a Happy Meal. Several here would refudiate that.
March 15, 201511 yr I'm curious to know how much of the disdain for the Dixie Chicks after the infamous statement had to do with them being an all women's group? If an all male country act had said the same would the backlash be the same? Yes, I disagree with PP. Would have been the same reaction if a popular country male act had done the same thing.
March 15, 201511 yr While I think that is possible, I tend to disagree. Maines went totally against the grain of the genre at that time. When the rest of country artists were writing songs about kicking tail, she and the Chicks didn't just not "go there" they went a completely different direction with their views. I don't about the rest, it was pretty clear that she had a conflict with one artist and it drove her to being more and more vocal. She was IMO as opposed to him as she was Bush. If she had said the same thing here, she would have been booed and it would have blown over. Saying it in another country I think ticked more people off than if it had happened here.
March 15, 201511 yr FWIW they were/are as "Talented" as any group in the last 25 years...those albums were really good. I never quit listening to them. If I didn't support artist that held a different political view than me I'd never go to the movies or turn on the radio.

In March of 2003 the US lost 65 in Iraq. The nation was very much at war. To go abroad and then criticize the CiC during war time is not good in terms of time or place.

BTW, that other artist is now worth over ten times as much as Maines
March 15, 201511 yr I never quite understood the "in another county" argument. It seems like just a smoke screen to me. We aren't isolated. Just because it might have been said in Texas doesn't mean that it wouldn't ever be heard outside of the country. Also, it didn't seem to be a big deal to anyone besides those in the US.

I guess I just disagree. I think many of us had expressed similar sentiments in the months leading up to the my term) invasion of Iraq. I know I felt that the war and loss of life was squarely on President Bush's shoulder. There was little squabble over what was happening in Afghanistan. But Iraq was a contentious debate. In the end, among those who were staunchly calling for military action, there would not have been (nor is now) a good time or place to question or denounce President Bush's decision.
March 15, 201511 yr BTW, that other artist is now worth over ten times as much as Maines He is :lol2: Hard to imagine that he's now the richest country music artist...I guess owning your own label has really paid off for him.
March 15, 201511 yr I think the knee-jerk reaction was embarrassing. I agree that it was an over the top reaction. Not trying to justify, but at the time you have several military bases across Texas (and the country) with Troops set to deploy, families saying goodbye to loved ones for who knows how long and maybe for good. These are the folks who made up a large part of her fan base. Right or wrong, at the time her comments were like saying, "I'm not supporting my fans getting ready to deploy." So fans are in turn thinking, "I'm not supporting you."

The old Clinton regime talking heads were on every news channel they could get on saying that they too knew there were WMD's in Iraq. It was only in hindsight for political reasons that they then were against it a few years later.
