Natalie Maines Is Still Not Ready to Make Nice

Featured Replies

They made one album after the comments. They were not able to cross over and their country music base abandoned them so there is zero doubt it cost them big time. However, they were already worth a lot of money and I believe Maines is married to an actor. She is reported to be worth $40 million so she's not going to end up playing casinos unless she wants to. It really is a shame as she had great pipes and was the reason the Dixie Chicks made it.

You sure they made enough to live happily ever after? Strike while you can and invest well. Or you become that band that plays at Horseshoe casino after all members are already 60 years old.

Brooks & Dunn also probably left some $$ on the table, but it's better to leave a little early than too late -- otherwise you might show up with a bad hairpiece (and lip syncing) on one of those nostalgia shows that we see during PBS fund drives.

I don't think anyone has said this. However, the public has the option to make them irrelevant which is exactly what happened. This was a costly opine for her and her bandmates.

C'mon now. Even in this thread the "Shut Up And Sing" sentiment has been posted numerous times.

I have no problem with fans voting with their pocketbook and not buying an artist's album because of a political stance. I do have a problem with fans being oblivious as to what the artist is all about. Artists who tend to take political stances are generally well-exposed in the media to the point to where if you buy a ticket to a concert of someone, well, that someone just might have causes they want to talk about.

Take Neil Young, for instance. His whole career has been rife with political/protest songs. Yet some people are so clueless that they would gripe about Neil talking about his causes during the show. How did you not know what you were getting into?

"Taking The Long Way," which is the album that features "Not Ready To Make Nice," was a No. 1 album and sold more than 2.5 million copies. That record got played like crazy on left-of-the-dial stations. You guys act like it went over with a thud the way the Doors' album without Jim Morrison did.

Given that the group was pretty sure they had lost the mainstream country audience anyway, I would say selling 2.5 million copies of the record was probably a major win for the band. And while Maines doesn't have as high a profile as she once did, she did cut a solo album in 2013.

Yeah, big win considering other of their albums sold up to 10,000,000. There's no denying the incident cost them major revenue. 2.5m is nice but nothing near where they had been. I think they knew they had lost country and the left leaning stations were not going to prop them up past that first album so they let it go. As to Maines solo career, well, she had a nice run as a Dixie Chick.

Maybe they didn't get into the biz just for the money? Pearl Jam made a conscious decision after their first three albums that they were going to do their own thing and not write songs to fit a specific market. Maybe Dixie Chicks did that too? Hell, they may even be happy with their decision. Pearl Jam was.

And that's a fair comparison — PJ and DC have perhaps equal total career album sales. PJ was shoehorned into the whole WEBN crowd the same way DC was to the WUBE crowd. May not have been a great fit.

They pooped in their own back yard.

The country music industry shut them down. Yes, they probably made enough money before hand, but they lost a ton of money in future earnings, not to mention their celebrity status and the respect of their industry.

Pretty pathetic when you have to keep bringing yourself up on Twitter.

They sold 2.5 million copies of the controversial record. It ain't 10 million, but it ain't chicken feed. I don't call that "shutting them down." As has been mentioned earlier in this thread by others, those gals were all getting set to have kids and had made a poopload of cabbage already. They might have been just fine with moving on to a different audience and/or reduced star profile.

Sure, maybe. They're certainly not hurting for money. I'm just not too big on coincidences. Sure don't remember hearing anything about these life change ideas before the album sold a quarter of some of their others and their concert sales dried up.
