92 year old hit 9 cars in parking lot won't be ticketed

Featured Replies

"I can tell you in 23 years of law enforcement, I've never seen anything like this,” Mayville Police Chief Christopher MacNeill said.

"His foot got stuck on the accelerator, and from that point, he panicked and lost control of his vehicle,” MacNeill said.

Nine cars were struck, two of which were occupied, and it took less than a minute.

Donald Gourlie's car was one of the cars hit. When he came outside from the grocery store, he found Kerr's vehicle up against his.

“What are you going to do? There isn't much you can say. It just happens. I was just glad no one got hurt,” Gourlie said.

Gourlie doesn't regret being at the grocery store. He said he was buying a Valentine's Day card for his wife of 58 years.

"I wrote, 'I love you' on the bottom. 'P.S. Sorry about your car,'” Gourlie said.

He has a sense of humor as he waits to see if insurance will cover the $2,400 worth of damage.

Police don't have the power to take away Kerr's license, but the report is being sent to the Department of Motor Vehicle, which will determine if Kerr needs to be retested.

Mayville parking lot incident considered accident | Local News - WISN Home

Caught this on the news, and I'm likely going to come across as being over the top on this. But, the guy should be charged with endangerment and other violations. He didn't kill someone only because there was no one in the line of his projectile.

We are told that driving is a privilege, not a right. Yet see time and time again people who have outlived their ability to deserve that privilege do something like this. Guy should be charged. When you get behind the wheel, you should be held to the same accountability as everyone else on the road. You can't have a separate set of rules, when operating something that can harm or kill unsuspecting people.

I've often wondered why taking the driving exam isn't part of the social security or medicare process. Once you are eligible and apply for such benefits, you must retake the test every five years. Pass or fail, you still get the benefits you are entitled to upon taking the test. But, then someone is monitoring their privilege to continue drive as capacities may be diminishing.

Lastly, I find it ridiculous no one revoked the guys license on the spot. Absurd.

you must retake the test every five years.

I have said this for years, but for everyone! I have said that every time you have to get a new license you must be retested.

But accidents happen, just because he is 92 doesn't mean he isn't capable of driving, the DMV will determine if he is or not.

I'll end on this, at first when I saw 92 year old and what I thought was Maysville, I thought of McPapa, then I checked again and it said Mayville WI. :)

92 years old? Uh, yeah... Time to hang up the keys gramps...

How amusing.

He will be here all week, folks.

Maybe.:D

My Grandma Smiley (RIP) was always concerned about when she should stop driving and we really didn't look forward to possibly one day having that conversation.

During a visit, she came in the room with a smile, and said "I think it is time for me to stop driving." Easy Peasy

Then 1 month later, she sold her car......all by herself, and got about $500 more than I would have......

We have this conversation about my dad all the time. We keep him on a short leash right now. Walgreens, Aldis, Bank, Church, local high school for daytime games. No more night driving. One of his kids or grandkids drive him at night.

It took Dad running under a lowered railroad crossing barrier to get him to relinquish the keys.

How does a foot get stuck ON the accelerator? Did Elwood Blues sneak in and spray industrial adhesive to the top of it? Unless that happened, kindly remove your foot from it and most cars will slow down considerably.

And if it was stuck and the engine was at high RPM's, how did he shift from F to R and back to F without taking his foot off of the gas? Many cars today you have to have your foot on the brake to shift gears.

So if there was no mechanical error, how is he not at fault? He easily could have mowed down a dozen people. If this guy was 22 years old would they have also let him go?

How in the world can they justify not ticketing him?

This! Sounds like they are giving him a break because he did not mean to do it?!?!? I would say that is the case in 99% of accidents...and almost all of them result in a ticket or worse.

The video is crazy!

How in the world can they justify not ticketing him?

That's where I'm at. You might panic and hit the accelerator instead of the brake for one car, possibly two. Nine? Sorry, no soup for you.

And I love what you did with Elwood. "This is glue. Strong stuff."

Viagra gone wrong.

If I'm 92 and still got access to keys, I'm hitting cars every week….
