I can't see how it wasn't "over the back." The player in white jumped "thru" the player blocking him out in black. He might have eventually "went over him" but he isn't entitled to go thru the guy. That's my take.

 

When did he go through the guy? He had already left his feet before body made contact. While he was in the air already the Boyle player made a good box out which left him in the air. Not an over the back call there. If he was already boxing him out and then he jumped....then yes, its an over the back.

Sorry, but I disagree. You can't run in and jump on someone's back and take them to the floor.

 

He never jumped on his back, he came down on his back when the boyle player went to box him out.

LOL, thats not an over the back call. He had already jumped before the boyle player made contact to box him out. Like I said in my previous comment, if he was already boxing him out and then he jumped on him, then yes it would be an over the back call.

Yeah that very well may have been on over the back on Faulkner. Dirty play by the guy boxing him out though. Faulkner up in the air and Boyle player with super aggressive box out forced Faulkner to grab on to him. That is the kind of play that gets someone hurt. Bottom line is refs didn't let Dow play at all and Boyle still barely won. Mercer got a couple calls at end of game, but it certainly didn't make up for the fact the refs sat Dow.

Im curious, how was it a dirty play?? Boyle player did his job and boxed Faulkner out. Faulkner was the one who jumped on top of his back and rode him like a bull. And how did the refs take Dow out of the game?? Every foul he committed was a legit foul. He's been in foul trouble in numerous games this season. Tells me he doesn't play fundamental defense. Plus your saying Boyle barely won without Mercer having Dow. Did you not notice Boyle played almost entire gsme without Elkins and still won and controlled the game for the most part.

To me it looked like the gameplan was they thought they couldn't guard Dow in the post so any time he caught the ball the defender fell to the ground and prayed for a foul which they got. I would rather see the defender keep his feet and try to guard the post and not flop. With Elkins out I guess they felt they couldn't guard him straight up

To anybody else not from Mercer Co it looked like good defensive position. Every foul he committed was 100% a foul. Gotta learn to stay out of foul trouble, something he has dealt with ALL YEAR

Boyle zoned and Baughman made it difficult for them to stay in it. Then they go man because Coach Adams isn't going to a box on Baughman. Four people in the lane is a whole different look than 5; 3 even better. You are right tin the sense that Mercer needs someone knocking down the three each night. If they get that, then the lane opens up and that spells trouble for the other team.

 

Regarding Hager pushing off, or most any guard for that matter, it's the chicken or the egg problem. Sure, guards will push off at times to gain an advantage to get up a shot. However, if the "pushing off" is happening on the perimeter, it's almost always as result of being ridden/bodied/hand checked by the defensive player. I think (offensive) players use that as a mechanism to adapt and, generally, it isn't called by the refs for that reason. They know it's tough to call the arm out on the offensive player when they didn't call contact on the defensive player. It's an accepted part of the game at the college level. Timmy Taylor is one of the biggest "offenders" - if you think that should be called - and he's the best PG I've seen around.

The third foul he was 30 feet away from the basket and he got him with his body. Just because his hands are up doesn't mean he can use his body to move the offensive player. 30 feet from the basket and he shouldn't be attempting to play defense the way he was when he picked up that foul.

I've often heard fans, and myself, yell at officials "Just give him a saddle!!!" Never was it more appropriate than this play.
