January 30, 201511 yr ADWD is markedly better than AFFC, but the best part is all of the fan theories to immerse yourself in once it's all over. Some of these people have written articles almost as long as the books detailing their theories. It's insane. And addicting. I remember when my kids were immersed in the Harry Potters books that similar sites were available for that series. Seems like they had some pretty interesting storylines.
January 30, 201511 yr Just started The Better Angles of Our Nature by Stephen Pinker. It's supposed to be a sprawling accounting of how violence has been reduced over the course of human history. I remember hearing Pinker on a podcast talking about his research for that book some time ago. Really compelling stuff. Will be very curious to hear what you think of the book.

February 1, 201511 yr I received "Saint Odd", the last installment of the "Odd Thomas" series, by Dean Koontz, on Friday. I am about 3/4 of the way through it.

February 2, 201511 yr I remember hearing Pinker on a podcast talking about his research for that book some time ago. Really compelling stuff. Will be very curious to hear what you think of the book. I'm only about 100 pages in of about 700. He hasn't gotten to much of his substantive research yet. He's spent time framing his argument as the contrarion argument, i.e. conventional wisdom is: "Wait, hasn't the world gotten much more violent and dangerous?" At any rate, his writing style is a little combative, for a lack of a better word. He's already dismissed a strain of anthropology out of hand, seemingly because their conclusions disagree with his (he might be right to, but ad hominem is not very convincing). His introductory anecdote to demonstrate human progress has been a long retelling of the Old Testament in a less than flattering interpretation, which I'm sure would cause many people to grimace. I'll update when I finish all of it. I know he somewhat rejects some of the standard conventions of writing, so I might also have to adjust to his style.
February 3, 201511 yr As an aside, I just, for the first time saw Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher. I won't be watching another. He is so wrong it is laughable. The credits said it was a Tom Cruise production. Maybe that is why he was the lead.
