I tell people all the time that if you want to see another fan base that acts like the UK basketball fan base all you have to do is go north to Columbus.

 

They're exactly the same.

 

They think announcers are against them.

They think they're undervalued.

They are both very thin-skinned.

They are both extremely obnoxious when they win. Hide the childre if they win a game the experts didn't think they would win.

 

So when you read OSU fans on here or any other boards realize you're reading a UK basketball fan's rants as well.

It is just natural for teams like this to build of a large fan base, a fan base that can get a bit too rabid. Notice Bellarmine's fan base isn't too bad. All few thousand of them.

I'm not doubting what he's saying, I definitely see the similarities.

 

Having gone to college in Ohio, I can vouch for it. My attitudes about Ohio State have definitely softened the more years that have passed between my leaving Dayton and the present.

 

In truth, I think it's easier to dislike big fan bases these days than perhaps it was in the past as the internet has ruined sports discussion in all but the most well-regulated sites (thanks, Guru). There's also the modern phenomenon of referring to people offering legitimate critique or proposing appropriate questions as "haters"... which is the easiest way of deflecting potential criticism without having to think too hard.

 

There's more noise in sports discussion that's difficult to drown out because every single fool in every single fan base now has an untempered and unsilenced voice.

 

I think a paraphrase of George Carlin fits pretty well. Big-time sports fans are like any other large group of people: some winners, a whole lot of losers.

This could also apply to High School, ie Trinity, Highlands, Bowling Green. I like all three teams but I fully admit all three have fans that need to calm down.

I think that's part of it, but I think every fan base has a certain element within that is just annoying. They'll hang on to certain things or deflect criticism or just be horrible when trying to talk with them.

 

As a Louisville fan, I get most annoyed with Kentucky fans when I'm having things "Cat-splained" to me. That's when a Kentucky fan tries to tell me about how college basketball works (like I've never watched a game) or gives me an unasked-for lecture about all the reasons Louisville football can't ever be truly competitive at a national level (because they follow the SEC and just see how elite programs are run on a weekly basis in a way that I, as a Louisville fan, simply do not). It happens kind of a lot.

 

On the other side, some Louisville fans have the uncanny ability to look the other way at problems within the program in a way that drives me crazy. The Bobby Petrino hire was a good one from a football standpoint. Certainly more of a known quantity with a better mind for football than anyone out there last December... but it wasn't perfect... and some people in town looked at every criticism of the decision as if someone just told them their mother was a call girl and took offense in a way that was unbelievable.

I really haven't found OSU fans to be like UK fans. I would go more with ND and Bama football fans. Then again, other than on here I haven't really interacted with OSU football fans.

There's not a group more obnoxious than the UK Basketball/SEC Football fans. It's not close.

 

As a fan of the little brother program, I can see where you would think that.

I'm a UK guy all the way. I obviously have more to cheer about in basketball. I also cheer for Ohio State in football though because that's where my wife went to school, and that's where her heart is. And where her heart is mine is also. So I guess I'm the scum of the scum like Crash said. :lol2:

My mother and father grew up in Kentucky and went to school at the University of Kentucky. They never moved back to Kentucky after college. I was raised in Miami, FL and Dayton, OH. I was always a Kentucky fan (more basketball), living in Ohio State's back yard. I did follow the Buckeyes, but I was never a diehard Ohio State fan. Woody Hayes played some boring football.

 

I went to school at the University of Kentucky. Chose my school to play football, but really because I was such a big basketball fan. So I grew up on Ohio State turf, but was an Alabama football (because of my father's loyalty to Bear Bryant) and Kentucky basketball fan. Making a general statement, Ohio State football fans are obnoxious. My brother went to Ohio State dental school. He is one of them. Kentucky basketball fans are obnoxious. I know because many of my friends are just that.

 

I have said for years that if I wasn't one of them, I would despise Kentucky basketball, because of the over-the-top fan base. Same goes for Ohio State football. I know this from my experiences.

Not a fan of the large majority of the OSU fan base. Being from NKY I've seen how they act up here and it is kind of ridiculous. Mostly because of how they treat UC. Never before have I seen more disrespect from one school too another than OSU towards UC. They act as if they are lucky to be in the state. At least UK fans have a little respect for UL fans and their programs.

 

Any fans of the traditional powerhouse are going to be rabid and crazy. OSU and Bama have the same exact type of fan base, crazy as heck. But UK basketball is the same way. So 100% spot on Clyde
