To be fair, they have done a lot better this year than I expected they would. Urban might have them on a similar path that he once had Florida on. So I do think it's impressive what he has done there in so little time.

In most cases, I root for the SEC teams to do well in both basketball and football. Same is true with 10th Region basketball--I'm almost always going to pull for the 10th Region teams.

 

With SEC football, a lot of UK fans hang their hats on the conference because...well, there's little else to celebrate. :lol2: I find that mentality both humorous and embarrassing at the same time. While I am very much impressed with the SEC's strength, I'm not going to run my mouth about the conference's dominance as if my team contributed anything to it.

 

Having said all of that, I think a lot (not all, but a lot) of the SEC hatred is hypocritical. There are fans from schools in the Big 10 who act like they've never pounded the same conference drum before. Or fans from schools associated with the Big East or ACC basketball. I've heard that same stuff my entire life and it has been prevalent here on BGP.

 

I think there's a distinct -- if perhaps subtle -- difference between banging the drum for how good a league is and what I see from people on this board a lot actually declaring themselves to be "fans" of a league (specifically the SEC).

 

I was one of those people banging the drum for the old Big East in 2008 or 2009 or whenever. Never considered myself a fan of the league. The only thing that would ever make me cheer for UConn or Pittsburgh or UC would be if they were playing Kentucky.

I don't think Alabama is "very good." I don't think Wisconsin is "very good." With a possible exception of Oregon, I don't think a "very good" college football team exists this year.

The SEC was down this year, in large part due to having 11 1st round and 7 2nd round NFL picks leaving the conference. Then add in teams like Georgia, LSU, A & M, Alabama, Vandy, Missouri & USC replacing very good QB's and it's not too surprising.

I agree with this. I just think some fans of other schools do a lot of the same stuff.

Edit: To be honest, if I was USCjr, I would turn it down too. Like it says in the article, they usually play a tough non conference schedule even if they turned it down. Also, it is basically a home game for FSU. I really don't blame Spurrier for saying no.

I don't know how long of a phenomenon its been, but for me I tended to favor the SEC stemming from 1) the BCS system and 2) the 2006 season where people were clamoring for a BIG Ten re-match between OSU and Michigan for the championship. After Florida stomped OSU that year, it made it extremely clear that the system was flawed and SEC teams were punished for playing in a more difficult conference, while more mediocre teams could cruise through a weaker conference and demand their spot in the title game. More than anything its that I wanted to see legitimate and competitive national championship games.

 

I think starting last year, and clearly this year, parity has been achieved amongst the conferences. The SEC no longer has a step up on the other conferences, and with the playoffs running the risk of an overrated team pushing out a legitimate power on an easier schedule is substantially reduced. No real reason to favor the SEC at this point.
