January 2, 201511 yr Author ^ Your points are valid. I think bowls should carry signifigcant weight, since all things should be fairly equal when they are played. It is one way to gauge conferences since they are in direct competition with each other. The SEC is quality and deep, but the bowl season is a definitive chink in the depth argument for me.

Why is that? I have always felt that way. From high school on I've cheered the 9th region teams any time one had success in any sport. In college when WKU wouldn't be there I followed and enjoyed the success of other OVC schools. If the Bengals are out I enjoy Pittsburgh and Baltimore doing well unless it's against Green Bay. Do to various family and friends, I enjoy the success of SEC teams in baseball, basketball football and swimming. I really don't understand why someone wouldn't do the same but to each his own.

January 2, 201511 yr I'll never understand someone rooting for a team that is in their league, conference, region...etc. You do realize that if the team you compete against wins they are much more likely to receive better recruits than you because you lost? If the teams I compete against could lose every game they ever played I'd be tickled to death.

Sure, you take a little regional pride and you like for the leagues and divisions your teams play in to have national respect. So do I. But the SEC thing has proven different. If VCU makes a run to the Final Four this year and I declared that I was happy because "in the end, I'm a fan of the Atlantic 10", people would rightly think I'd lost my head.
January 2, 201511 yr Why is that? I have always felt that way. Same here. In most cases, I root for the SEC teams to do well in both basketball and football. Same is true with 10th Region basketball--I'm almost always going to pull for the 10th Region teams. With SEC football, a lot of UK fans hang their hats on the conference because...well, there's little else to celebrate. :lol2: I find that mentality both humorous and embarrassing at the same time. While I am very much impressed with the SEC's strength, I'm not going to run my mouth about the conference's dominance as if my team contributed anything to it. Having said all of that, I think a lot (not all, but a lot) of the SEC hatred is hypocritical. There are fans from schools in the Big 10 who act like they've never pounded the same conference drum before. Or fans from schools associated with the Big East or ACC basketball. I've heard that same stuff my entire life and it has been prevalent here on BGP. As for best conference, I don't know. Perhaps the SEC had the best as a whole, but they obviously weren't the best at the top this year. I agree that bowl games don't tell the entire story, but they tell a significant part of it IMO. The Big 10's upper tier teams have done really well, but the SEC's not so much. There was a lot of parity in college football this year, but I think that has more to do with the overall product being pretty weak. Maybe I'm wrong on that, but that's how I think. Three of the four teams that suited up last night were unimpressive, at least from my vantage point.
