Hell no!! When UK is good then college basketball is a whole lot of fun. Fans of all college teams want to be the ones to knock UK off when they are this good. I love it when UK is this good. I think it is great for the game.

I think you can substitute any college basketball blue blood for UK and this would be true. College basketball is better when the big boys (UK, Duke, UNC, Kansas, UCLA, Indiana, Louisville) are better.

First off, UK has not accomplished a thing. They won a title in 2012 and been to a couple other Final Fours. They were more dominating in the mid-90s and teams have been equally or more dominating over a 5-6 year span. You are more talking about the prospect of a UK domination having so many talented kids and easing to a title. Anytime you have a villain it is good for sports. Then you have an equal amount of fans that root against a team. Parity is overrated.

It's not possible. There just isn't enough talent for more than one or two other schools to do what he's doing. That's why it works.

 

There is plenty of talent to go around imo. The issue I see is that Cal figured it out first, so everyone else is a few years behind. He also figured out the "platoon" system first. Imo, a lot of schools could impliment a form of the platoon system. It may not work at first, but 3* players can become 5* players with the right development and in game experience. In time that could turn an average team into a great one, year after year. The issue again, is that Cal has already implimented it, if other schools don't follow suit and Cal can get kids to stick around for an extra year or so, everyone else would have a hard time catching up. That said, I believe UK loses a lot of their top 10 players this year, which would give other schools a chance to impliment Cals system on an even playing field.

Kentucky has been to two of the last three title games. Granted they only won one of the two, but who has done better than that in the past 10 years? IF Kentucky makes it this year, that's three title games in 4 years. Teams hang banners for stuff like that.

With all that said, I think Kentucky is bad for college basketball at the present.

 

Weren't people asking the same question about KY HS Football when Trinity went through their peak period form 2010 to 2013? Or is there too much of a difference between HS and College sports?

I have said it on here many times that I think this UK team is so good, so dominant, and so deep that it is absolutely not fun. I'm not a UK fan, admittedly, but in most years I'm likely to tune into 50-75% of their games because I'm a hoops' guy. This year that simply won't be the case. I watched the first half of the first half against UCLA then turned it off. What is the point? I guess if you are BBN-guy you love the domination, but for a college basketball guy with no dog in the fight, it is boring.

 

I do think from a business perspective it will ultimately hurt the ratings of their games, especially the 2nd halves of games. I also think the lack of parody, or even a 2nd team (I'm not convinced Duke can play them close on a neutral court), will take away some of the buzz nationally from March Madness. I think UK will be much like Duke in the 90's, where their fan base will be uproariously excited at their dominance, but the rest of the country will go to vilify them.

 

Painting with a broad brush, I find many in the UK fan-base to be tough to take on average years, and if this first month+ of the season is any indication, this winter will be even more difficult to cope with (when it comes to those folks).

Disclaimer, even though most know it already, I'm 100% NOT a UL fan. I actually prefer UK to them and IU....by a wide margin. Just so no one thinks I took the UL shot as one directed at me. Not the case.

Yum will have its BBN representation, but it will be hostile. If UK has its way with UL the way they have these other games, I might sing a different song.

 

Florida is always a tough environment. Alabama will be as well (Cal hasn't won at Tuscaloosa since coming to UK...0-2). Tennessee is another.

 

Don't get me wrong. I think UK & Duke are the two best teams in basketball. They certainly have the most talented rosters. I just don't see either of them being unbeatable.

Picking nits. I am trying to get in to the merits of comparing one team to the next. Point I am making is that teams have had similar type runs. Georgetown, Duke, UK in the mid-90s, etc. Guru is more talking about an over-the-top type dominating team.
