Is Kentucky bad for college basketball?

Featured Replies

For those of you that know me well, I am a UK fan but I am also a UofL fan, an X fan, and a UC fan. In other words, I like all the local teams. UK is my favorite but I can take or leave college hoops if you know what I mean.

With all that said, I think Kentucky is bad for college basketball at the present.

Agree? Disagree? Why?

For the rest of college basketball, yes. Cal is taking a great deal of talented players away from the rest of the country.

What your reasoning Guru?

As a UK fan I admit that their dominance bores me. There are very few of their remaining games that will cause me to cancel plans.

I do not think they are bad for the sport.

The longer they stay unbeaten the more attention it will bring to College Basketball.

If they lose this week all of that attention will fall to Duke and how long they can go undefeated.

If UK was this dominant year in and year out it would be bad for the sport as a whole...but great for UK Fans :)

But this is a one season ride!

I think it could be great for the sport, as long as everyone else can keep up. Cal is essentially changing the game, if other teams follow along, it will make for some great games between some great teams. If others don't follow along with his philosophy, or are unable to, it could essentially be bad for the game as a whole. So far it looks like Duke is going to and has the ability to use Cal's plan.

That said, I think it is good for the game. You have a dominant team again, that everyone loves to hate and wants to see them lose. Then you still have the usual upsets throughout the year in other games, which keeps it interesting. With the usual upsets and everyone that's not a UK fan wanting to see them lose, I would expect high network ratings for this year's tourney.

They're bad for NCF's sanity. :lol2:

I don't believe they are bad for basketball. But then again, I don't believe UK is as invincible as others believe they are.

They have pretty well run roughshod over everyone so far, but they've played everyone in a friendly environment too.

It's not possible. There just isn't enough talent for more than one or two other schools to do what he's doing. That's why it works.

If this is true then Duke must be placed into the exact same category.

I never heard anyone say John Wooden was bad for basketball, he had just as many pros and was more dominant over a longer period.

Big Blue Nation is everywhere. How many games will they play all year in a hostile environment?

Certainly not this weekend. Louisville fans can't wait to sell their seats to Cat fans that will fork over enough cash to pay for their entire season ticket package. Can't say I blame them. 1) Who wants to watch their college team get pummeled by the D-League All Stars? 2) What they charge for seats at the Yum Center is extravagant and I can hardly be upset with folks trying to get a little of that money back from Jurich.

I enjoy watching them dominate good teams or even "traditionally good teams". Seeing them kill some school I've never heard of gets boring at the half.

First off, UK has not accomplished a thing. They won a title in 2012 and been to a couple other Final Fours. They were more dominating in the mid-90s and teams have been equally or more dominating over a 5-6 year span. You are more talking about the prospect of a UK domination having so many talented kids and easing to a title. Anytime you have a villain it is good for sports. Then you have an equal amount of fans that root against a team. Parity is overrated.

Yum will have its BBN representation, but it will be hostile. If UK has its way with UL the way they have these other games, I might sing a different song.

Florida is always a tough environment. Alabama will be as well (Cal hasn't won at Tuscaloosa since coming to UK...0-2). Tennessee is another.

Don't get me wrong. I think UK & Duke are the two best teams in basketball. They certainly have the most talented rosters. I just don't see either of them being unbeatable.
