Personally...for those who else think its bad for the college basketball world, I'm not sure what's worse.....UK dominating like they do or EKU bashing a Top 20 Miami () by 18 in Coral Gables.

 

I can see why G and others might think it's bad for the game for sure.

I have said it on here many times that I think this UK team is so good, so dominant, and so deep that it is absolutely not fun. I'm not a UK fan, admittedly, but in most years I'm likely to tune into 50-75% of their games because I'm a hoops' guy. This year that simply won't be the case. I watched the first half of the first half against UCLA then turned it off. What is the point? I guess if you are BBN-guy you love the domination, but for a college basketball guy with no dog in the fight, it is boring.

 

I do think from a business perspective it will ultimately hurt the ratings of their games, especially the 2nd halves of games. I also think the lack of parody, or even a 2nd team (I'm not convinced Duke can play them close on a neutral court), will take away some of the buzz nationally from March Madness. I think UK will be much like Duke in the 90's, where their fan base will be uproariously excited at their dominance, but the rest of the country will go to vilify them.

 

Painting with a broad brush, I find many in the UK fan-base to be tough to take on average years, and if this first month+ of the season is any indication, this winter will be even more difficult to cope with (when it comes to those folks).

 

When a team is 1:1 to win the National Title, before Christmas, it can't in any way be construed as "good for the sport".

 

 

I wholly agree with parts of what you've said, but readily disagree with others.

 

To me, there are just years in college basketball where it's obvious that one team is far and away better than the field. Maybe that's UK this year, maybe it isn't. I still think that as a UK fan, we are one bad shooting night in a one-and-done NCAA tournament away from feeling the same disappointment we felt in 2010.

 

If there were a consensus favorite who ran roughshod over the competition each and every year, then I'd agree, but this is the first year in awhile where there's been a huge, overwhelming favorite. The closest to this season's UK team in recent history that just seemed to be a foregone conclusion to win the title was 2009 North Carolina. They ended up winning won all 6 tournament games by at least 12 points, including 14 and 17 point wins in the Final Four in games that didn't even feel that close.

 

While I think Kentucky is more talented than they were, the two teams share lots of similarities.

 

#1. Like Kentucky, Carolina was a unanimous #1 entering the season (the first ever).

 

#2. Like Kentucky, they had some NBA talent return to school: Ty Lawson, Wayne Ellington, and Danny Green all withdrew from the Draft to return. 6 Tar Heels eventually played in the pros and all were drafted in the first round (picks 13, 18, 13, 17, and 28) with the exception of Danny Green.

 

#3. Like Kentucky, they had a big frontline with lots of depth once Zeller and Davis were mixed in with Tyler Hansbrough and junior Deon Thompson (who was a top 20 type recruit coming out of high school and probably the most highly rated from that group not to be drafted).

 

#4. Like Kentucky, they had a talented recruiting class that had lots of balance, but no huge, game changing star (i.e., Incoming freshmen Tyler Zeller and Ed Davis were consensus 5* guys and Larry Drew was a 4*). ESPN graded all 3 as '96'; by contrast, ESPN graded UK's 2014 class as 97, 97, 93, and 92.

 

 

I love my Cats, but Okafor, Emmanuel Mudiay, Cliff Alexander, Myles Turner, and, depending on the service, Towns were the studs of the '14 class. Tyus Jones (and/or Mudiay), not Ulis, was the #1 PG. Justice Winslow, Kelly Oubre, and Stanley Johnson were all ahead of Booker, as was Blackmon Jr, who the Cats also recruited.

 

 

Maybe blasphemous of me to say, but take that and mix in experienced role players who did what was expected of them like senior Bobby Frasor (who was highly recruited), senior defensive stopper Marcus Ginyard, and a guy who wouldn't hurt you and averaged 10 and 4 on the year in junior William Graves, and I might say that, as a college team, North Carolina was closer to Kentucky sans Poythress than many out there on BGP might think.

 

Again, Kentucky is probably more talented, but UNC had 6 guys who were drafted and stuck around the league awhile, plus two 4*/5* guards to go with them in Frasor and Drew, and two really good collegiate role players in Ginyard and Graves. Not really the worst collection of talent and blend of skills when you look at what they had on the whole.

 

 

Considering all that, you still have to remember that the 2009 North Carolina team was that dominant and still lost 4 games (but admittedly, the ACC is going to be a bit tougher than this year's SEC).

 

If you want to argue that the 2012 Kentucky squad is a more recent example of a team that was a foregone conclusion, you have to remember that no team relying so heavily on freshman had done it before and there were still questions about Cal winning the big one. There were also lots of neutral fans greatly anticipating a matchup between UK and North Carolina (who had a healthy Kendall Marshall going into the tournament and whom UK had narrowly beaten in Rupp).

 

Alternatively, the 2010 Kentucky team might be one of the best teams I've ever seen NOT to win a championship in terms of their top end talent, but still struggled early in the season and had a tendency to play down to overmatched competition who'd slow the game down for extended periods (sound familiar)?

 

 

What I'm trying to say: we should let UK win it all before saying that they were bad for college basketball and that it's so anti-climatic that you've really lost interest in watching. If nothing else, I'll stand by saying that I think Duke, Louisville, and Iowa State are all easily capable of beating Kentucky on a given night and that while I'm enjoying the ride, I'm not ready to anoint this team invincible.

I think gestlow put it best when he said that there were more categories of UK fans than people might think when looking from afar.

 

I know I'm kind of an outlier in lots of ways when it comes to my UK fandom.

 

If it doesn't come through in some of my posts, I don't care to explain why I say that, but I think that people I talk with a lot on here would kind of guess most of what I would have to say already.

 

I know G wants hits with this question, but I still can't help but respond, so it works and I guess that's one aspect of my UK fandom I really can't shed.

I can assure you that the number of UK fans over 50 that I heard complain about one-and-done kids at Kentucky far outweighs any other group of people I heard complain about it. Many on this site.

 

So you don't think that more that 50 people outside of UK fans was critical of the 1 and done philosophy? Go back and read or listen to comments made since 2009 not just in January and February of 2014.

Ask yourself the very same question. I see you in EVERY Duke thread. You don't see me in EVERY UK thread. I very rarely go into UK game threads because I very rarely watch UK play.

Honestly no one in their wildest dreams not even coach Cal would have thought that you could be able to land this much talent in one year.

Sure you offer scholarships to them but for that many to accept to one school is just amazing.
