Basketball in KY needs to be classified...

Featured Replies

Heck no they wont make a run....... but it isnt because the system isnt fair. Its because the team is young.

Plenty of schools run into that problem, and it has nothing to do with numbers. I know large 4A schools that have that problem. Look at Whitley Co and North Laurel from the 13th region.

I am tired of trying to give every team that cant play worth a hoot a chance to win a championship for the sake of being fair. Life isnt fair. You have to face "bigger & better" everyday in the real world, and you cant go crying to some legislative body to classify the problem for you so that you dont have to face "bigger & better."

Its completely stupid. There is a reason the small schools dont compete with the large schools, and it isnt numbers.

In football it is numbers. The reason a Belfry cant compete with a Trinity isnt neccessarily because of actual football ability, its because they have 5 kids who play 3 ways and only have a roster of 40 whereas Trinity has a roster of 100+.

In basketball its not that they dont have enough players to field and adequate team, its that the talent isnt there, and although that isnt fair, that is life.

It's stupid to think that numbers have nothing to do with why small schools cant consistenly compete with large schools.

You keep telling us numbers arent the reason, tell us what it is. Why dont small schools compete? You have yet to explain it to us.

You refer to the NCAA. Why do they have Division 2 and Division 3 Championships??? Not anything to do with size Im sure.

You went from Male to Apollo??? Ok you edited it. Gotcha.

Either way.....

You bet it is fair IMO..... if it is handled the way it should be, then it looks like Raceland has the makings of a heck of a team next season..... and then 2years after that if the feeder program does its job.

Not to mention that several other large 4A schools could have the same problem Raceland has..... but we dont attribute that to numbers.

So what..... Raceland is a young team compared to Male. I dont see how that has anything to do with numbers, except that the feeder programs arent doing an adequate job of getting kids interested in basketball and getting them to stay out.

You got me all right. I started my post going with a hypothetical, changed it and went to a real comparison and forgot to change the first sentence from Male to Apollo, before I clicked the post button, then editted one word.

This will be my last reply to you, because after every post I make I return to see that you have added or editted your previous posts. How many rebuttals do you want to have? If you were doing your closing statements you would have the judge give you additional remarks.

Many times at a school the size of Raceland it has little to do with the feeder program when you have 25 to 30 kids in a class to choose from. We had a class a couple years ago that had 0 basketball players, 0 baseball players and 1 football player in a graduating class. There frankly were no athletes in the class.

You going to tell me at a school the size of PRP with 235 boys per class they wont find some athletes a little easier than Raceland with 30?

I've enjoyed our exchange....

I am the king of edit, thank you! Get over it!

I am not saying that numbers have NOTHING to do with it. I am just saying that the 1 reason numbers have SOMETHING to do with (bigger numbers = better talent) it is irrelevant IMO.

Other reasons small schools dont compete?

#1 Small schools do compete. Small schools compete (play close games) with big schools on a regular basis. They also beat big schools. They just havent done so in March. 1A Barbourville came within 1 point of beating 4A defending state champ South Laurel in the region final. Boyle Co beat that same South Laurel team. You also have lots of 4A and 3A schools that can't beat a 1A or 2A school. If numbers matter then explain those anomalies. If every big school was totally demolishing every little school then you could say that numbers matter, but that isnt the case.

#2 Alot of your bigger schools come from urban areas where there is more talent and also more interest with regards to basketball. This isnt because of numbers.

#3 Alot of your smaller schools are awe struck by the bigger schools, and therefore dont compete at their highest level against the bigger schools because the biggers schools usually have more tradition, nicer gear, or are more athletically imposing

#4 Alot of your smaller schools dont have the money to put, nor put the money if they have it, into a big basketball program. The larger schools have more money to work with and therefore can dedicate more to the b-ball program.

#5 Alot of your smaller schools dont have adequate feeder programs and there middle school and elementary school participation is largely ignored.

etc etc etc must I go on. There are a number of reasons the smaller schools dont compete against the bigger schools and it has nothing to do with numbers and how numbers = better talent.

NCAA basketball Division 2 and 3 doest have to do with size..... it has to do with scholarship limitations. Division 3 schools cant offer scholarships, and Division 2 schools are limited in some form or fashion that puts them on an uneven playing field with Division 1 schools.

I have enjoyed our exchange as well.

As far as the situation you are talking about at Raceland..... I find it hard to believe there were no athletes.

I find it more probable that the few possible athletes there may have been were not interested in Raceland athletics for a reasons that could be offensive.

Sounds to me like interest in Raceland athletics needs to be rejuvenated within the younger students.

Regardless, it sounds like you still easily fielded a team of 10-15 players, although they may not have been the best players or the most experienced.

Also.... yes PRP will find more athletes. But it isnt all because of numbers, and it still doesnt change the fact that both teams still had the 15 players they needed to compete..

You got me all right. I started my post going with a hypothetical, changed it and went to a real comparison and forgot to change the first sentence from Male to Apollo, before I clicked the post button, then editted one word.

Maybe you should wait a little longer to respond to my posts after I am completely through editing.

You dont have to respond the very second I make a post. You can wait a few minutes.

When I edit I usually do so within the first few minutes I have made a post.

Since everyone wants a fair playing fieled lets do this in all sports so all the little Johnnies and Janies get a "fair" chance to win a title, because America is not fair if they don't

AAA - 200 boys/girls

AAAAAAAAAAA - 1,000 boys/girls

AAAAAAAAAAAA - 1,100 boys/girls

AAAAAAAAAAAAA - 1,200 boys/girls

AAAAAAAAAAAAAA - 1,300 boys/girls

Then put in the rule everyone gets to play at least 1 min, nobody gets cut from the team, uniforms all have to be the same black and white design, Chuck Taylors are the only shoes, only Powerade for TO's and after you win one title, you cannot win another for 3 years, in that league, you got to the Champions League, where everyone will again win a title.

Add the seperation of public/private( in the private we will have independent, Catholic, Baptist, non-denominational, etc. etc) you get 112 state champs in every sport every year, if your school is cheated out of winning a championship this way, we play a tourney at the end of the year with all the non-winners(losers is degrading and not fair to Johnny and Janie) until everyone wins a game.

This way llittle Johnnie and Janie know how the real world works and when they don't get a job they want, the company will just make a super position for them to get paid $85,000 a year.

Forget hard work, pactice, and the purpose of being on a team, thats all a waste of time and Un-American now.

Just seen this.:thumb: :thumb: Love It!!

This way there a party in everyone's town every so often and noone gets left out and this way. We can all get together and hug and try not to forget whos turn it is to win it the next year so they can be ready to be the host of the party. :dancingpa :dancingpa Cant Wait!!!

The NCAA reference in this arguement is irrelevant. NCAA schools can recruit so that numbers and size of the school isn't an issue. KWC has a total enrollement that is around 800 students. Yet they compete and win championships against some schools with enrollements over 20,000.

The arguement about Raceland/Apollo is one I like here is way....

In rural Ky, HS coaches don't want to develop talent, they are looking for the next Todd Conley and JJ Hylton in 6th, 7th grade. They think if liitle Johnny is 6'3" in 8th grade he'll be 6'10" on 12th, and that my friends doesn't always happen or it goes like this.

Little Johnny scores 50 in 8th grade when he is 15 against 13yr olds well he must be better than the SR and JR I got......then in 3 years when Johnny is a JR/SR another 8th grader, Jimmie, comes along who is 6'3" and scored 50 in 8th grade as a 15 yr old, well dang he is better than Johnny, lets cut Johnnies minutes and attention in practice so we can build for next year.......then that happens on and on and on.....Also mountain coaches don't do AAU, and they schedule cupcakes to get 20 win seasons and have no clue how to play against a 6'8" guy who can stick his head in the rim, or a 5'10" guy who goes baseline to baseline in 3 dribbles and 4 secs.......

Football, well Johnny gets his brains knocked in and gets hurt so KHSAA doesn't allow 8th graders to play plus the fact that Strength and Conditioning plays a HUGE ROLE in football but cannot help the underdeveloped body of a 8th grader much.

And guys it is not just bad/clueless coaches who do this in the 14th, 15th, 16th regions even the great Bill Mike Runyon went with young guys to capture that magic he had in 1996.......but they are so young and immature plus their parents are so nuts that they are literally fighting each other once a week.

Coach the right way, work on fundamentals, atop looking for your next superstar to walk throught the door as a 8th grader and WORK AS HARD AS YOU WANT YOUR KIDS TO and basketball doesn't need classification you'll compete, a Class A and AA school might not win it every year but they will compete at Rupp, in the greatest sporting event in High School Sports.

RUSH

The Trees

There is unrest in the forest,

There is trouble with the trees,

For the maples want more sunlight

And the oaks ignore their pleas.

The trouble with the maples,

(And they're quite convinced they're right)

They say the oaks are just too lofty

And they grab up all the light.

But the oaks can't help their feelings

If they like the way they're made.

And they wonder why the maples

Can't be happy in their shade.

There is trouble in the forest,

And the creatures all have fled,

As the maples scream "Oppression!"

And the oaks just shake their heads

So the maples formed a union

And demanded equal rights.

"The oaks are just too greedy;

We will make them give us light."

Now there's no more oak oppression,

For they passed a noble law,

And the trees are all kept equal

By hatchet, axe, and saw.

A classic song. One of my favorites.

IMO if you class anything, class everything. It's only fair. Football coaches always brag when they beat a larger class school or use it as an excuse when they lose to one. I agree it is easier to win a football title than a region in basketball. We have talked about that for years. While change is being done lets align all sports in the same districts and regions. How can anyone keep up with volleyball or soccer district/regions.

I've got a better idea. Let's put PRP, wth 1939 students, up against Silver Grove, with 296 students, and let them compete for the same State Championship. That's a great idea.

Fine, let's say..."Silver Grove needs to do a better job of selling their basketball program or working harder or coaching better...etc." Two years down the road everyone will be calling for their heads, crying about recruiting.

Bottom line, it's a no win situation for smaller schools, period.

I still don't think it should be classified. I played high school b-ball and thought I could play with anyone in the state. If you are telling smaller schools they can't only compete with smaller schools what example are you setting for them later in life. Life is not fair, but anymore I not sure how fair all aspects of sports are becoming. I have heard many disturbing things.

I'm continually amazed at the disparity between people's ideas of "fair". How is it that many people who support a public/private split are opposed to classification of basketball? Seems to me that "fair" is a subjective term, that only applies when it benefits one's personal preferences.

I have members of my family that coach, ref, teach, play, and are part of the administration in school districts. I am fully aware of the politics and deomographics of high school sports. They don't think it should be classified and don't care about the public/private debate. I think a whole lot of the problem has to do with transfers. A team in the tenth benefited from transfers, a team in the 16th had a transfer, and numerous post have been talking about transfers. Everyone wants to play on a successful team. But if everyone is determined that b-ball should be classified then divide it into four regions (North, South, East, and West) and everyone can play with teams that they have more in common with.
