Why is it we have this same STUPID discussion every year. Why change something that is so sucessful year in and year out. Not everyone can win a championship. Sorry parents..it is not in the cards. Im just sick of seeing people act retarded over little Jimmy not having a chance in the state tournament. It will happen again. Quit getting your panties in a bunch over 4A teams winning in the state tourney. I went to a class A school. And the thought of having a class system in high school basketball never crossed my mind because I wanted to be a champion. You have to earn it. Period. Quit complaining!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This conversation is getting very very OLD. Get over it. It's not going to happen. Quit crying.

Basketball needs to be classified. The 1A and 2A schools have almost no chance and it is not fair to the smaller schools to have to compete with schools several times bigger than their school.

 

I understand "everyone" loves the event, the perks, and the KHSAA makes a lot of money off of the Sweet 16 so I don't expect them to tinker with the cash cow but it is still not fair.

 

What I really don't like is all the public schools powers that be jumping up and down claiming the private schools have unfair advantages (this debate is for another thread) so they are changing the rules to level the playing field but at the same time these same powers that be are doing nothing to change the Sweet 16 which is grossly unfair to small schools.

 

Hypocrisy is a horrible thing.

Classification IS necessary in football due to the "physical" nature of the sport. Football teams cannot compete week in & week out against larger squads without risk of injury, etc. (perhaps there are some exceptions someone may want to argue, but a couple games per year against the big boys is NOT the same as playing them every week)

 

Classification of basketball is NOT "necessary" - it's a feel good issue only.

This reminds me of the "every kid needs a trophy" mentality of an ever increasing number of parents. Folks need to grow up and realize that young people are not psychologically damaged by not winning a championship.

This is a slippery slope issue as well - where does it end? Every sport classified? Academic contests classified?

You accuse public schools of wanting to "change" the rules. I would suggest they are simply asking that the rules they are supposed to follow be extended to others (some who are thought to be taking advantage).

While you choose to say its hypocritical, others could view it as being based in "principle," simply as an extension of the basic rules governing the education system. Unless of course we want anarchy where each school makes their own determination what is right.

Basketball's not physical? Ask Bellevue (A) if their district game with Highlands (AAA) was physical.

So one more trophy is "every kid needs a trophy?" Wow, 6 football trophies with 40-100 kids per team is not giving "every kid a trophy" yet giving 2 basketball trophies is. BTW, there are significantly more high school basketball teams than football teams in the state of KY.

I just spent a long time searching the KHSAA website for this smaller school championship you speak of and couldn't find it. Can you help me out?

So right, so right. I've had a few football coaches tell me that winning state in football is easier than winning a region in basketball.

I think alot of people are missing one the main points of the Original thread.

WHY the outcry on the public/private debate and nothing said about small/large school division!!!! --IF it is true that all is wanted is it to be fair to all kids.

 

I think it is hypocritcal to support a division or levels in the private/public and not support the same based on size and # of students. If you want one left alone---leave it all alone .

No way should we go to classes for basketball do you remember a couple years ago they had a documentary on ESPN about how we only crown one state champion. We are the only state in the union that does that and that's what makes Kentucky High School Basketball so special with the thought that anyone can beat anyone on any given night. Take a look at Apollo they were rated 12th out of 16 teams and they came very close to winning the state championship.
