Basketball in KY needs to be classified...

Isn't that why we have the All "A" tournament?..........This is a state tournament for the smaller schools..........When you think about it, the middle men, which are the 2A schools, are the ones who should be complaining.....They don't have a "separate" state tournament like the All "A", yet they still have to compete with the 3A and 4A schools to win the big one.............Keep things like they are..........

The All A is NOT a sanctioned KHSAA state tournament. It is officially no different than any other regular season tournament. BUT the schools that participate in it, consider it a state tournament and treat it as such.

I do not believe they look at it as a watered down championship.

What about the 2A schools that cannot compete with the 4A and 3A schools but have no championship to compete for.

I think it's funny when I read post from folks that didn't want to split the private school from the public schools, but believe we should seperate into classes. Wouldn't those seperations be basically the same thing? Single A from AAAA, Private from Public?

The game Saturday night was boring and we had two large schools. What if we had a small school, say Hazard or Paintsville playing J-Town, the place would have been rocking. I realize it doesn't happen often that a small school plays fot the title, but when it does, it worth the wait.

Basketball's not physical? Ask Bellevue (A) if their district game with Highlands (AAA) was physical.

So one more trophy is "every kid needs a trophy?" Wow, 6 football trophies with 40-100 kids per team is not giving "every kid a trophy" yet giving 2 basketball trophies is. BTW, there are significantly more high school basketball teams than football teams in the state of KY.

I just spent a long time searching the KHSAA website for this smaller school championship you speak of and couldn't find it. Can you help me out?

This would imply that all public schools follow the rules to a tee...I'd say that's wrong.

Dear Sticky,

I don't know where to begin in my effort to help you in reading comprehension. You appear to have taken selected portions of my post and dissected the literal meaning of that rather than the meaning of entire sentences.

I referred to "the physical nature of [football]" to support my view.

What does one basketball game have to do with any of this?

How many people do you know who actually think basketball is a more physical game than football?

I stated: "This reminds me of the every kid needs a trophy mentality..."

What in the world are you talking about with 6 football trophies and 2 basketball trophies?

My discussion is about the concept or motives of this type approach.

Perhaps the KHSAA messed up but last I heard, Paintsville is one of the smallest schools in the state.

Sorry but I in NO WAY implied "all public schools follow the rules to a tee".

I referred to: "the rules they are supposed to follow..."

How can you twist my words this badly????

Woody Jr

I'm confused by your bolded sentence.

How is classifying football about safety?

Dear Mom:

Except for a few exceptions, small schools cannot compete against larger numbers of the big schools on a week-in, week-out basis. They will get beat up (not literally of course) and not be able to maintain their programs due to more limited numbers available for participation. An example would be schools with offensive & defensive squads with subs at each position. They would wear down kids going both ways, etc and risk of injury goes WAY UP. [im sure lots of people can provide a specific example to counter this but Im using just to provide a basis for the argument]

An example of this is NCAA football with the smaller D1 schools getting squeezed out by the "super powers". They almost invariably take a beating whenever they play one of the big boys (for a paycheck), though they do win sometimes, but they cannot do it consistently.

Cheers, Woody Jr

I'm sorry, I didn't know I was supposed to interpret your post literally. BTW, smilies help when your post needs emotion of some sort. Hence, the "rolleyes" fella above.

I was actually proving my point that basketball is a physical game too. Please tell me where I said basketball is more physical than football? Hint: You won't find it. Just giving you an example and I thought it would be nice to use a game I actually witnessed.:thumb:

Well for starters, there are 4 football classes and soon to be 6. So, the winner of each class receives a trophy. My point was, everyone says it's ok to have 4 (and soon to be 6) football trophies yet everyone thinks it's insane to have 2 basketball trophies. That's hardly the "every kid needs a trophy mentality." Especially because of the numbers. AGAIN, more basketball teams than football teams.

Um...ok, thanks. I never said it's not possible but is it realistic year in and year out? History says otherwise, as theGuru has stated.

So, did I twist your words badly or did I just literally interpret your post? Make up your mind.
See. Indiana.

Nuff Said!

If Indiana or west va. for that matter is so dissatisfied then why aren't they chaning back?????

The fact of the matter is 49 states class size and Ky. doesn't and it is a shame for all the smaller and mid sized schools in ky. who don't have a chance to compete. If crowning one champion is so great let's do it in football.

How about 4 class champions and 1 overall champion.

For example:

Wednesday morning of Sweet 16

Class A Region 1 vs. Region 2

Class A Region 3 vs. REgion 4

Wednesday night

Class AA REgion 1 vs. Region 2

Class AA Region 3 vs. Region 4

Thursday morning

Class AAA Region 1 vs. Region 2

Class AAA Region 3 vs. Region 4

Thursday night

Class AAAA Region 1 vs. Region 2

Class AAAA Region 3 vs. Region 4

Friday morning

Class A Finals

Class AA Finals

Friday night

Class AAA Finals

Class AAAA Finals

Saturday morning

Class A Champion vs. AA Champion

Class AAA vs. AAAA Champion

Saturday night

Winners from morning session play for overall State Champion

Now drawing can be held to determine which class plays which on Saturday morning as well as to decide which sessions each class plays in for the first round.

Some will argue that it would take away from a class championship by getting beat in a semifinal or in the Saturday Championship. Does it take away from winning a region title then going to the state and getting beat? Four teams would be able to call themselves state champs and these kids would have championship rings. Just like in football. But, then for all the traditionalist, we would still crown an overall state champ on Saturday night. I actually think this would work. Look at all the positives there are. We would still have the Sweet 16, there would be 4 state champs, 1 overall state champ, the crowd would still be the same or maybe better (the 4 A schools would most likely turn out more fans than the 4AAAA schools would.), and the KHSAA still gets there money. Which is their main concern.

What do you think?

I think this is the ANSWER

I think it's funny when I read post from folks that didn't want to split the private school from the public schools, but believe we should seperate into classes. Wouldn't those seperations be basically the same thing? Single A from AAAA, Private from Public?

It is going to happen less and less.......The big schools are consolidating and are becoming bigger.......You won't see another small school state champion.....unless they cheat like hell.

I suspect that most fans in Indiana would prefer a two-class setup to what they have now, but the schools won't vote for a change ... it's my view that the schools will vote for whatever gives them an easier road in the postseason.

Maybe everybody from a small school who feels we need to class size should quit buying tickets to the state tourney. we could go down and stay in our rooms and socialize. We don't need the games.....You take us out of the tourney and you would more than cut it in half.

Hit them in their pocket book

Which is what Ky. needs. Our educational system (KHSAA included) is about providing opportunities for kids. Our student athletes at our smaller schools aren't given that opportunity. Breathitt co. is a neighboring co. they were 3A and not very good in football for years. They dropped to 2A and have won state championships and have community pride. Tell me class sizing didn't provide them opportunities.....Basketball needs to do the same for its student athletes.

Your assumption may or may not be correct. What about two divisions? 4 is too many, IMO.

I am from a small school and i know many kids from small schools who are crying out for the KHSAA to class size. Of course the bigger schools don't want to. They get to go to teh state tourney evey year and just being there is great. But what have they done....most of them have beaten schools half their size to get there. AND when you do get a small school there and once in a blue moon (won't happen again) wins the state championship...they are usually a city school from a larger county who pulls the best athletes out of that county. i.e. Paintsville was a small school who won a state championship...but Johnson Central has many many students in the same county who they could pull from. What about the counties who have one small high school with 250 or so students and no other school within 40 miles to pull from....show me one of them who has won a state title.

My opposition to classes is based on this:

If Kentucky was to go to a class system, two is all we need. Given that the All A Classic is already in place and virtually all of the small schools already compete in it, I say leave things as they are. As it is, small schools get two chances to play in a state tournament.

I'd agree with that only if the KHSAA would recognize the All 'A' as a State Tournament. You'd still have to hear it from the smaller AA schools but I think most of them get in the All 'A' anyway..ie Newport, Lloyd, 'O' Cath...etc.

Unfortunately as it is now, the All 'A' is just considered a tournament.
