Basketball in KY needs to be classified...

Will never happen...should never happen.

There's a better chance of a selection committee naming 64 teams to advance to a KHSAA postseason, than class systems.

There's a better chance of a selection committee naming 64 teams to advance to a KHSAA postseason, than class systems.

As it is now, how many teams do make the KHSAA postseason.

This would include the regional tournament, which eventually wittles down to the Sweet 16.

How many districts are there in KY HS bball multiplied by 2? That would give us the answer wouldnt it?

Even David knew that he needed to keep his distance from Goliath to beat Goliath. :fight::argue:

Larger schools can literally beat on the smaller schools 6-8 man rotation for 32 minutes with 10-12 players and wear them down or foul them out. I have seen this done many times by the larger schools in the district and regional tourneys. Officials don't want to disrupt the "flow" of the game by calling a foul on every possession so they let it go. This has snowballed into raslin' in the paint and pure basketball has been snuffed out.

Larger schools have a larger number of bigger, faster and stronger athletes that can eliminate the skilled athletes that work on the fundamentals of the game. Pressure defenses, hand checking and raslin' in the paint is allowed and the price we pay for letting it happen is a loss of pure fundamental basketball. Being aggressive is different from a physical beating. The smallest of schools will not be seen in the sweet sixteen until someone makes teams play basketball and not basketbrawl and so it goes...

Classified? Please, this gets very old.

No need to classify something when they already ahve a state championship for all the A schools anyway. I guess you want the cake and ice cream, huh?

As stated before --it is not classified by KHSAA as a state tournament.

I'm sorry, I didn't know I was supposed to interpret your post literally. BTW, smilies help when your post needs emotion of some sort. Hence, the "rolleyes" fella above.

I was actually proving my point that basketball is a physical game too. Please tell me where I said basketball is more physical than football? Hint: You won't find it. Just giving you an example and I thought it would be nice to use a game I actually witnessed.:thumb:

Well for starters, there are 4 football classes and soon to be 6. So, the winner of each class receives a trophy. My point was, everyone says it's ok to have 4 (and soon to be 6) football trophies yet everyone thinks it's insane to have 2 basketball trophies. That's hardly the "every kid needs a trophy mentality." Especially because of the numbers. AGAIN, more basketball teams than football teams.

Um...ok, thanks. I never said it's not possible but is it realistic year in and year out? History says otherwise, as theGuru has stated.

So, did I twist your words badly or did I just literally interpret your post? Make up your mind.

You've repeatedly done both; twist peoples words AND misinterpret posts, in addition to making baseless comments such as "small schools are better academically than large schools." Thats an incredibly poor generalization.

I was pointing out how you had apparently seriously misunderstood me by mistakenly taking a small section of one of my sentences literally rather than reading the entire thing. Then your above post started with: I'm sorry, I didn't know I was supposed to interpret your post literally.:rolleyes:You didn't even respond to what I said. Do you not understand what I meant? I was saying that you're NOT supposed to interpret a PART of it literally!

You then boast that you "actually proved your point that basketball is a physical game too." Read my original post ...slowly if necessary, I DID NOT say anything about basketball not being physical. The point I was bringing up in regards to classifying football is that FOOTBALL HAS TO BE CLASSIFIED for the small schools due to their inability to compete week-in and week-out against big schools. If you don't understand that concept then you should go ask some small school coaches about what would happen to their team if they played bigger schools most every week. Whatever happened in some basketball game you happened to witness has NOTHING to do with the point I was making.

You then prattle on AGAIN about 6 classes for football and 2 for basketball and what that particular number of trophies does, or does not represent. and you keep mentioning the total number of football and basketball teams in the state. You state "..that's hardly every kid needs a trophy". That has NOTHING to do with my original post. Again, go back & read slowly....

In response to the idea of affording more kids an opportunity to win a championship, I SAID THIS: "It REMINDS me of the every kids needs a trophy mentality that an ever increasing number of parents have." Please try to understand what that statement means before you go off about that other stuff - I'm not debating the number of classes for each. Respond to someone else if thats what you want to argue about.

Finally, Guru stated that small schools have NO CHANCE to win a championship in basketball. I simply posted that he was wrong because Paintsville DID win the championship within the last 10 years. You responded by stating you had spent " a long time searching the KHSAA website for this smaller school championship speak of and couldnt find it" So.... I simply pointed out to you that Paintsville was considered a small school. You then feel the need to come back with "I never said it's not possible but is it realistic year in and year out? History says otherwise, as the Guru has stated." Just take your medicine and give up man. Theres no need for you to create some comeback when you have no ground to stand on. You made a smart aleck post about no small school winning and everyone could see how uninformed you are. I simply posted it where all could be reminded of it:p

It's apparent you can't decide which side of an issue you want to argue about. I NEVER ACCUSED YOU OF SAYING THAT. I was responding to Guru's posting and you stuck your nose into it. HE SAID it was NOT possible and I simply pointed out that it WAS POSSIBLE because it happened!!!! Either you have great difficulty using the KHSAA website OR apparently your understanding of Kentucky high school sports is so poor that you don't know Paintsville (a) is a small school (b) has won state championships. This is my last attempt at setting this straight for you.

I personally don't agree. I think that all the schools should compete against each other...in both basketball and football. Your agruement is that the small schools don't stand a chance against the big schools. I've been out of high school for a little over 10 years, and yes, I went to a 4A high school. But trust me, in our region, the best football team year-in and year-out was not our high school or another 4A high school. It wasn't a a 3A high school or even a 2A high school. Yes, the best football program belonged to a 1A school *gasp* Imagine that! I don't think they were quite as good this year, but in years past, this team was able to kick everyone in our regions butts whether it be a 4A, 3A, 2A, 1A school. It was a cause for HUGE celebration in our 4A school actually defeated this tiny 1A school. I think our school has only beat them two times ever, and we do have a decent football team. That is just how good this little 1A football program was. So don't tell me that the little schools can't compete with the big schools...They can. And the other small schools in the region can definitely hold their own in football...and basketball. Our region has sent its share of 1A and 2A teams to the Sweet Sixteen.

Why should the small schools be denied the right to play against the big schools? That's like telling the small schools that 'Hey, your a small school so you can't possibly hope to have a team as good as one at a bigger school.' I personally think it's a bit insulting to the smaller schools. Tell that to teams like the Hickory Huskers(from the movie Hoosiers) and past KY champ Cuba. These schools were tiny. Less than 100 students and they still won state. If you so adamant about there being a 1A, 2A, 3A, and 4A champ then do individual championships and then have the four winners compete against each other. I think it's insulting to small schools to just assume they can't hold their own against the big schools in sports just because they are small.

And I'd also be curiuos to see how many 1A and 2A schools have advanced on in the state tournament. How many made it to the quaterfinals, semifinals, and championship game regardless of whether they actually won the whole thing or not? Everyone seems to be only looking at who won the whole thing, but if a small school made it to the semifinals that means they are one of the best teams in the state even if they didn't win the entire championship. And it would also be interesting to see how the class sizes of winning schools would change if private school' champs were not considered. With the exception of UAB, all the private schools that won have been large...was their winning due to their size or because they could recruit people to their school? So if you take out any private schools, how do the numbers work out then? Just curious.

You've repeatedly done both; twist peoples words AND misinterpret posts, in addition to making baseless comments such as "small schools are better academically than large schools." Thats an incredibly poor generalization.

Most small schools are a lot better academically than most large schools.

Honestly, I stopped reading your waste of a post after this paragraph. It's evident you don't read posts thoroughly or correctly. I highlighted the words you so willingly omitted. The irony of the above post, directed towards the "twist peoples words AND misinterpret posts", has me laughing too hard to respond to the rest of your nonsense. Also, you say "incredibly poor generalization", while I say "pretty dang accurate."

I have a question. Wouldn't dividing the tournament into classes - 1A/2A and 3A/4A give the private schools an extra advantage, as it appears to do in football? I'm asking that under my assumption that most private schools would fall under the 1A/2A category.

P.S. This is actually me asking a question, and not stating my opinion. I would appreciate an actual intelligent answer rather than being berated and called names as many tend to do. Thanks!

The lower levels 1A, 2A are not usually dominated by private schools but independent schools. Beechwood, Danville, Mayfield, etc.

Private schools are not the issue in basketball in KY, historically. It's been big school dominated, for the most part.

I believe most private schools are 1A and private schools do mainly represent each region in the All 'A' but IMO, that would even out if you add the bigger 'AA' school. Currently 'O' Cath is the only AA private school.

For the record, the berating only occurs if warranted.;)

I think that in Kentucky the "sweet sixteen" is what it is all about, it is probably one of the best h.s. tourneys/concepts in the nation. Small schools have won it before. I support and am a fan of a small school (Raceland), there is the "All A" classic but I don't think that it is sanctioned by the KHSAA. I just love the concept of one tournament - state wide for all the marbles. As for football being classified - I can see that bc there are a fewer number of kids that make up a basketball team that do a football team. Small schools would have a much harder time matching up in football just due to the number of kids in the school and the number of kids that it takes to make up a football team as opposed to basketball. There is nothing wrong with the sweet sixteen staying the way it is. After all, there is always the chance/dream of the little guy taking it all and that is what makes it special.

I agree. There is nothing sweeter than being the 1 state champion. Keep it as is. As far as I am concerned, football is the only sport that should be classified and it really wouldn't hurt my feelings if it was not either.
