Good Evening ladies and gentlemen and welcome to the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center and Cardinal Stadium for the thrill and excitement of high school football in the Jefferson County 4A playoff championships as the Shamrocks of Trinity High School face the Bruins from Ballard High School.....

...And now please rise for the playing of our National Anthem, this is everyone's song, please join in and proudly sing...

...Thank you very much for attending. Along with clock operator the veteran Richard "Rozie" Rozell this is stadium announcer John Tong bidding you a very pleasant good night and reminding you to please drive home safely.

Setting aside the moment in 1997 when the clock ran out in the fourth quarter and the Cov Cath team I was playing on defeated Hopkinsville to become the AAA state champions...

I would have to go with the final drive of the 1994 AAA state championship. I was 13 years old, and watching from the stands for the fourth time as my Colonels played in the championship game. Bowling Green was driving hard, starting their drive at their own 39 yard line, but their offense struggled both with communication from the sidelines to the field and amongst the players on the field as well, and time ran out as they had just gotten a first and goal on the 3 yard line. Talk about a nail-biter.

I like hearing Gary Ball!

...Old Cardinal held a playoff doubleheader...I don't know how often they did that, but that was a fun night.

I seem to recall Tim Couch and Leslie County playing a first round game at Old Cardinal Stadium in the mid-90s against Knox Central. Does anyone else remember this?

I can tell you my two least favorite memories as well:

2000 AAAA State Championship Game: Male 34, Trinity 14. The Bulldogs absolutely crushed us and it was cold and snowing heavily.

1997 AAAA State Championship Game: St. Xavier 3, Trinity 0. Trinity lost a title game with the most conservative offenses this side of an Alabama/LSU game and I think it remains the coldest I've ever felt in my entire life.

First round?

I'm not sure of the year you're referencing, but in '94 (Couch's junior year), Cov Cath traveled to Leslie County and upset them in the semis. Lelie County was 13-0, and our safety had two picks on Couch. They lost at Highlands the following year in the semis.

Played one game there. Lost in the AAA finals in 1980. Cold, cold night and the turf was frozen. Rough.

Without a doubt!

Watched many good state championships and a few Cardinal games back in the day as a kid. It will be weird seeing it gone.

GRC Hoops I agree with you that was great game and it wasn't decided until the last play. Is the entire game with Grahm Johns play by play avilable anywhere?

I forgot both Capel and Steinmetz were on that Colonel squad.

I heard that he does but he has not uploaded it to the Internet as far as I know.

Call me old school but that's the blue that CCH should still be wearing. Not sure when the shade got changed.

When some left their lights on in the parking lot, it was "your lights are burning."

Yep. I had the pleasure of being beaten up on scout team by those two. Tomorrow marks 16 years ago that Artie died, and December 5 will make it 19 years since Capes died.
