Rather have a three team district with teams that make sense than a four team with one team who is the black swan. No rivalry. No history. Travel is a bust (both home and away).

 

In four classes, wasn't much of an issue. With six classes, it's a huge problem.

 

The current Meade-Central Hardin-Muhlenberg district is like that because:

- North Hardin shrank (for reasons only Hardin County Schools can explain)

- John Hardin shrank (see above)

- Nelson County split

- Shelby County split

- Greenwood split

 

All five of the above schools (NH, JH, Nelson, Shelby, Greenwood) have been in the Meade-Central Hardin district in the past. None are there currently (although NH will be back next year).

 

That meant Muhlenberg (haul, different time zone, no ties to Central Hardin period) or Ohio (same) had to be stuck with Central Hardin/Meade just to get to three. Couldn't put both, because then Western Kentucky would have had only three (and further travel for whoever took last spot).

 

There was no good candidate to put with Meade/Central Hardin. Pulling a school out of Louisville or NKY or Lexington wasn't an option.

 

Thus you get a three team district which makes sense except for first round of playoffs as opposed to a four team district where one game each week leaves two teams ticked (one for having to travel a long way, the other for making little money off the gate).

 

At least Raceland has two of the three teams that are currently in our district in our district next year. And the one that isn't is a 2 hour haul out a windy road that we, for lack of better words, kill every year. KHSAA put them in a better district for there program right now, but their district plays ours in the first rounds. Which is good if you're a Ram fan, but is truly unfair for them.

IMO, if a team that is going to getblown out truly feels like a game is a waste of time, money, and effort. Forfeiture is always an option. As long as these schools are willing to make the trip to get blown out, so be it.

Here's some info for you...I did this after the first round of the playoffs last year. The thread was titled "Stats 1's vs 4's - Interesting!"...if you want to look up the responses so you're prepared!!!

 

Here's what I posted:

 

A lot of talk about 4 teams making the playoffs, watered down vs "let them all play". Just some stats.

 

If I counted right...47 1vs4 games tonight...94 teams.

 

Two 4's beat the 1's:

Manual beat Ballard to death (which really isn't an upset when your 4 seed is in the top 8 of the state!)

 

Dunbar beat Tates Creek (a 5-4 one seed taking on a 5-5 4 seed. Both teams played earlier in the year with TC winning 21-20) Not really your typical 1vs4 scenario. More of a weak number 1 from a weak district)

 

Results:

2 upsets (if you count Manual) 4% of the games were upsets.

2 teams pulled off upsets (if you count Manual) 2% of the team pulled off upsets

1 seeds averaged 49 pts

4 seeds averaged 13 pts

Average margin of vicory was 35 (5 touchdowns!)

 

That's even considering that I'm sure many starters in many of the blowouts played very limited time in the second halves of the blowouts and I'm sure several scores for the losing teams came late in the games against reserves. If you take the Manual game out of the equation (41-0) because that's not a real representation of a 1vs4 game, the stats get even a little worse.

 

Results:

1 seeds averaged 50 pts

4 seeds averaged 12 pts

average margin of vicory was 37 (5 touchdowns!)

 

Thoughts?

I have not read the other posts, so I apologize if I repeat parts or all from above.

1. Kids that want to play another game, but are on a bad team get one last game.

2. Kids that don't want to play another game, but are on a bad team get one last chance for cheap shot on an opponent and end their season too.

 

I don't really think #1 justifies #2.

 

Just my honest opinion.

If it's about playing another week, there's a simple solution: Kill the bye week and make it an 11-game regular season (that way you can schedule someone YOU choose and not have a likely blowout forced upon you).

 

Take the top two seeds. The 3s and 4s, who most likely would have been knocked out anyway, still get their 11th game. Plus you get rid of a ton of blowouts (and decrease travel, since you're getting rid of a GUARANTEED road trip for half the teams in the state).

 

Fans don't have to watch meaningless blowouts in round of 32 anymore (since there would be no round of 32).

Players/coaches still get in their 11th game (face it, most teams are done at 10 or 11 anyway).

I took a look at all the brackets. I see 12 teams that are #4 seeds who I think deserve to be in the playoffs and/or who have a chance at getting a win in round 1. I started a separate thread where those interested can discuss their chances.

 

As it pertains to this thread and discussion, I think that is why round 1 and the current playoffs are just fine for me. Yes, there are teams that have zero chance of winning in round 1. There will be some terribly lopsided games. But if you set up the playoffs to make sure those lopsided losers don't get in, you also throw out a number of teams who deserve a chance to play in the playoffs. I would rather allow the "non deserving" teams in than to eliminate deserving teams from an opportunity that they will only get a couple times in their life.

 

I will also add that I think we could even see a zero win team get a win over a #1 seed in round 1 - Somerset could beat Shelby Valley.

 

Finally, I didn't even consider the #3 seeds who might get a first round win. For those who want only the top 2 teams in a district in the playoffs, there are many additional teams that very well might get a round 1 win who would be denied ever having a chance to accomplish that.

To play devil's advocate, with no first round of the playoffs, Trinity and Manual would be left out this year. I think most would agree they are deserving of a playoff spot.

No argument from me about paring down every season so that there is no overlap at all.

How many of those opposed actually coach or have coached at a school in which there was not an automatic entry into the playoffs via a small district? The district our program is in has 6 teams in it, which means that you usually need at least two district wins to get in.

 

Our program has made the playoffs for the first time since our seniors were freshmen. We see it as a program builder, something to build on with our team, which is predominantly sophomore and junior.

 

Maybe its not always productive. Perhaps, 3 per district with the one seeds having a bye is a better solution. But, overall I'm fine with the current climate. Maybe the smaller class sizes should have a smaller playoff. Are there fewer teams in 1A currently than other classes? Is 6A like that too?
