I have an idea...everyone get off their holier than thou attitude and just let it play out like it is now.

 

I don't understand wanting LESS football each season.

 

I don't understand why some think tie-breakers to eliminate teams is better than playing it out on the field.

 

Watching an 0-10 team who has no chance against a district winner get smashed 63-0 IS less football.

Why is there never an outcry against every single team in the state making the playoffs in every other sport?

 

1) No one else's postseason cuts into the start of another season's sport. Football is still going on (finals) during regular-season basketball's opening week. Soccer and Volleyball, which allow everyone, are already done and have been done for a few weeks at that point.

 

2) To go along with 1, no one else's postseason lasts five weeks. Usually three at most. Two in some cases (individual sports).

 

3) Football is the ONLY sport where you are NOT knocked out by a district rival right out of the gate.They tried that a few years ago and football coaches HATED having intra-district play for rounds one and 2 (not see a different district til round 3).

 

4) Playoffs in every other sport don't involve near the travel. When Fort Knox gets beat in basketball, it's a 20-minute drive for a running clock. 20-minute drive to get run ruled in baseball/softball, 20-minute drive to get 10-goaled in soccer. Put FK in the football playoffs and they're going 1-2 HOURS to get crushed in the cold.

 

5) To go along with five, teams lose money in the first round in football. If you're the visiting team, you gotta pay for gas for food for what could be your longest road trip of the season. If you're the home team, the visiting team ain't bringing anyone if they're a 0-10/1-9, 2-8 four seed. And your own fans probably won't show up because it's a laugher, it's cold and basketball is on (scrimmages, although UK home basketball opener is on a Friday night during second week of playoffs).

 

6) No other sport (with the exception of 6-A) do you have as much home-field advantage as you do in football. Six teams in football might not have to leave home until the very last game. In other sports, you're lucky to home field for the district tourney. Even less for the region. 1-in-2 to host a state first-round game in soccer, but your final three games are at neutral sites. Your final four games (sweet 16, elite 8, final four, championship) in baseball/softball, basketball, volleyball are all at neutral sites.

 

7) Every other team sport has random draw for the final three rounds, and every sport but soccer and football have them for final four rounds. Playoffs become old and tiresome in football. BG vs. JH in final four? Yeah, like we haven't seen that before. 6-A is the only one that switches it up even a little, but even then it gets old if you're opposite the Louisville super district.

 

8) No other sport makes a big deal about "making" the playoffs. In football, many teams don't "make" it at all.I've seen football coaches' resumes talk about playoff appearances and postseason wins. In other sports, they're referring to what you do at State.

I can't wait til a four seed (from a four-team district) just decides to forfeit a first-round playoff game two hours away. Not worth it at that point. Not for the travel/financial aspect. Not for the health aspect (being out in the cold for two hours when you know the outcome). Not for the safety aspect for either team (serious injury; plus what if there is a wreck going to/from a blowout). And believe it or not, first-round forfeits happens in other states EVERY year.

 

If a four seed in a four-team district does it, you CAN'T argue they took a spot away from another team, because there are no spots and no teams to be concerned about. I agree with you completely. Now, there are first round games out thee that are upsets and close games, but isn't that due to the pairing of districts? I believe so. But then again, 8 or 9 out of 10 times, the first round games are blowouts. And the four years I have played, there have been someone on the opposing team say they didn't want to be there---on the field lined up against me. And I went through to reclassifying cycles. So it happened with two different districts.

Thank you. I was just getting ready to go there. We see basketball playoff games with scores like 100-8. We see baseball playoff games with scores like 28-1. Why do so many people want football to be the only sport that doesn't allow everyone into the playoffs?

 

Although injuries happen in all sports....if in the process of beating an 0-10 team-- your starting QB was injured, or any other player for that matter...You would have to ask yourself "why was he even in this game"....and if your asking that question about a playoff game...you have to then look at the system and say it needs an overhaul.

I can see both sides, but as a parent, a coach, a player....you have to come to grips with the fact that you work and prepare to win enough games to qualify for the playoff's...and then have a couple of games that do not "seem to fit" from a competition standpoint. It is awfully hard to get better each week and PEAK when you need to down the stretch while playing these type games... This is a huge let down for the players IMO, and a huge consideration when coaching and managing players in the hopes of avoiding a catastrophic injury during a meaningless game.....granted, you have to win this game to move on....but, letting a winless team in the playoffs seems "outa whack" to me.

 

It is a difficult dilemma for sure....Not sure what the right answer is....I just know that I "cringe" when some of these TOTALLY MISS MATCHED games are played and pray for no injuries...for either side.

It's just another KHSAA mistake imo. I have no problem with 4 teams from a district making the playoffs if you have 5 or more teams in the district. If you only have 4 in most districts then I have no problem saying top 3 make it. Never want just 2 per deistrict only because there are too many 3 way ties that occur a lot of years.

 

With that said, KHSAA also has it screwed up when they have districts consisting only of 3 teams, especially when they have the same area with 6 teams in that particular Class, for example next year there will be 6 teams in 6A in NKY area yet they are making 2 3 team districts instead of 1 6 team district which would make the games in the regular season actually count. How fun would a NKY 6A district be next year if there were 6 teams in it? Every week would mean something and make those district games huge!!!!

I still like the top three of four in each district make it, and first seed gets bye. That way, everyone gets rewarded, except the one team who didn't preform. Makes the kids want to work hard for the next yer to make the playoffs.

I do too, the problem is KHSAA even screwed the possibility of that up when they created 2 districts in the same area like NKY of 3 teams each. The more I think about it the more I am convinced the KHSAA could screw up a good dream.

Same with Raceland's district next year. They have a three team district and play a very weak four team district in the playoffs. However, Pikeville and Hazard's district has five teams in it and the fifth seed will play as the four seed in our district in the playoffs. Complicated.......

Rather have a three team district with teams that make sense than a four team with one team who is the black swan. No rivalry. No history. Travel is a bust (both home and away).

 

In four classes, wasn't much of an issue. With six classes, it's a huge problem.

 

The current Meade-Central Hardin-Muhlenberg district is like that because:

- North Hardin shrank (for reasons only Hardin County Schools can explain)

- John Hardin shrank (see above)

- Nelson County split

- Shelby County split

- Greenwood split

 

All five of the above schools (NH, JH, Nelson, Shelby, Greenwood) have been in the Meade-Central Hardin district in the past. None are there currently (although NH will be back next year).

 

That meant Muhlenberg (haul, different time zone, no ties to Central Hardin period) or Ohio (same) had to be stuck with Central Hardin/Meade just to get to three. Couldn't put both, because then Western Kentucky would have had only three (and further travel for whoever took last spot).

 

There was no good candidate to put with Meade/Central Hardin. Pulling a school out of Louisville or NKY or Lexington wasn't an option.

 

Thus you get a three team district which makes sense except for first round of playoffs as opposed to a four team district where one game each week leaves two teams ticked (one for having to travel a long way, the other for making little money off the gate).

Why do you want them in the playoffs?

 

My thoughts are this: more players are susceptible to injury, schools lose money, most schools didn't earn the bid to get in, and most of those teams don't want to be there period. Other schools have to fight for playoff spots-- 2A, 3A, 4A, and 5A schools. Top three teams, first seed with a bye, like I said before. It would build more competition.

 

You are speaking from one point of view. My senior year we hosted a four seed and got beat in the first round. Are you saying they shouldn't have even had the opportunity to be there? 3A District 8 will likely sweep District 7 in the first round. You're saying Magoffin County and Breathitt County are more deserving to be there than Sheldon Clark and Pike Co. Central, even though SC and PCC will likely win their first round road playoff games.
