What is the benefit of the first round of the Playoffs?

Featured Replies

Have 4 classes and put teams according to their strength as a program. If you make the playoffs you stay in your class, make the final 4 and you move up a class. Don't make the playoffs and you drop down After a 2 year period. Reclassify based upon the 2 years. In 6 years you'll have teams in the appropriate classes. Wouldn't you love to see a district of Graves, McCracken, Bowling Green, Henderson and Owensboro in Kentucky's elite class. Then these weaker programs could level down to where they belong and could be competitive. Imagine Muhlenberg, Marshall, Ohio, McLean, and Logan in a district. That would be fun and competitive for them.

Why is there never an outcry against every single team in the state making the playoffs in every other sport?

Thank you. I was just getting ready to go there. We see basketball playoff games with scores like 100-8. We see baseball playoff games with scores like 28-1. Why do so many people want football to be the only sport that doesn't allow everyone into the playoffs?

Yes, but my question remains: if the players say they don't want to play in these games they are obviously going to get beat badly in, why are they taking place?

This isn't the adults debating if the game to should happen, this is the players saying they shouldn't happen.

I didn't say that. You are twisting my words. I said that they would make them more competitive, meaning more competitive than what they currently are. Instead for fight for four spots for four teams (1A and 6A), make it four teams to fight for three spots. Right now, there is no "all or nothing" for 1A and 6A teams. For example, Greenup made the playoffs for the first time in, correct me if I am wrong, four years. Despite that they play a Cov Cath team that will beat them by 40, they are happy to be in the playoffs--BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO FIGHT FOR IT.

That's what reward is.

:thumb: Another thing about going to a 3 team advancing playoff would be that the district champion would be rewarded with a 1st round bye and not play until the 2nd round vs. the winner of a 2 vs 3 team game. Not having to play that first week would put more emphasis on the regular season district schedule with the district champion getting that 1st round playoff bye, giving time to heal up from nagging injuries that players may obtain through the rigors of a regular season. Geez.....imagine that, even more emphasis put on 1, the regular season district play and 2. Reward for WINNING.....actual, real achievement being rewarded !! Who could figure that  ???

Incentive to work hard - an actual / real reward for an achievement that was earned by winning !! Nah, that wouldn't teach a young man in high school any life lessons, like working hard to achieve a goal would actually pay off for all of your work. Absolutely Nothing could be taught / learned there :sssh:.

SO, Just go ahead and cancel the regular season and give em' all a prize and send to the playoffs. All will live in harmony and joy for all of their life with the promise all of them never having any disappointments bc everyone will always "win" in everything that they will ever attempt. Heck, just show up for work - collect your paycheck. No work necessary, the company and/or the boss won't mind at all......Yes...sarcasm was intended. :)

My answer to that very good point is that it is jmo that the district games / schedule are in fact a "playoff" in that it determines a teams standings within their district. So, imo that (district schedule) would serve as the 1st / elimination part of the playoffs....like a basketball / baseball "district tournament" sends two teams to the Regional Tourney and eliminates the other district teams/schools - ending their season. So, we have that same elimination playoff within the district schedules serving as the "district tournament" in other sports.

LITTLE RAM !!! ......See What You Have Started ???

I come from Michigan and for the most partI like the playoff format they have established. They play a 9 game regular season and their playoff position is based on a point system that takes into account the strength of schedule. You also must win a minimum of 6 regular season games to be playoff eligible. 5 wins, on rare occasions, will be accepted if playoff spots need to be filled. They have 8 classes compared to Kentucky's 6. They play their state finals on the Fridays and Saturdays of Thanksgiving weekend which is nice because most people are already taking time off. This gives more fans the opportunity to see their teams and makes travel a little more palatable since Thanksgiving can be used as a travel day which I do not see most folks balking at if their team has a chance at a championship. This comes into play for the Upper Peninsula schools who might have a days drive to get to Detroit which is where the finals are held, indoors albeit, which isn't all bad either in a Michigan climate.

Right now, this does not account for the five team districts. But for the four team districts, why is it that all four get to make it to the playoffs? I am primarily talking about the 1A schools that are fourth in their respective district. I played ball from 2010-2013. The last class realignment was at the end of my freshman year. My freshman year, we were the third seed in our district headed into the playoffs. Even then, the players on the other team kept talking rhetorically, "Why are we here? This is pointless." I didn't think much about it until my junior and senior years when we were the one seed in our district. Of course, we didn't play the best teams in the state in the first round either of the two years, however, I found myself lining up across from a player each year and they looked at me and stated "which way are you going? I'll just go the opposite way" or "yep, going to be a long game. Might as well just go home".

I love Kentucky High School football, but should a team that goes 0-10 make it to the playoffs to more than likely just get embarrassed? Why should we reward mediocrity or failure? I think it is dumb but many people say that each senior gets one chance to suit up one more time. Well, what is the point of Senior Night? I honestly don't like it. Thoughts?

You're trying to get on RCC9's good side aren't you?

To answer tho original question:

Without first round games, you could never have second round games. Duh.

Guys, I have spoke about this for years. Not to do comparisons but just look at some simple facts.

Ohio and Kentucky are similar in that 32 teams per Division/Classe make the playoffs.

Ohio has 713 teams in 7 classes (224 in, 489 out) 31.4% make the playoffs (all reg. season games count)

Ky, has 221 team in 6 Classes (192 in, only 29 out) 86.9% make the playoffs (only 3-4 dist. gms count)

Since Ky will never reduce the number of Classes, they need to take the Top2 in each district, not 4.

0-10, 1-9 teams continuing to make the playoff each year just waters-down how fan think of KY HS football.

Play this game: Take a guess at what the margin of victory (average),after all KY first round games are played, will be.

I will say at least 25 points (average) margin of victory all games, all classes. Some games will be 40, 50 points.

Venues are another issue. In Ky, only the state final game is at neutral site.

Ohio, after first round, all games are at neutral sites. Just using comparison to show the KHSAA, it could be done better IMO.

Please no one compare football to other sports. It like comparing apples to boat anchors, they aren't comparable, Football is just it's own unique sport.

I will also add a little to what oldrambler said above Lets use basketball as an example. Many are calling the district tournament as part of the 'state tournament". Well, technically it might be, I'm not sure. But to me, it isn't. To me, I look at the district tournament as just like a conference tournament, just a smaller version, and winners of the first round advance to the "state tournament".

There is absolutely no reason for a 0-10 Hopkins Co Central who hasn't won a game a believe in 3 years and only 1 game in 4 years to be playing in any type of playoff where they are up against a district winner who we all KNOW (Franklin Simpson) is going to beat them badly and the game probably won't be competitive at all. Same goes for a game like Beechwood and Bracken County. These are games that don't need to be/shouldn't be played. No knock on the schools involved, but in the above example Bracken County and HopCo Central would be a LOT better off playing each other at the end of the season for their last game than playing far superior teams where they are going to get mashed. It gives them a chance to possibly end the season on a upnote and help prepare for the next season.

What's the answer? Maybe some sort of flex scheduling? Top two teams in each district advance to playoffs, or maybe top 3 with district winners getting bye first round. As the season draws to a close and teams that know they aren't advancing to the playoffs are allowed to start calling each other and scheduling an 11th and final game for the season against each other. Or maybe some teams are just ready to throw in the towel and call it a season at 10 games, choosing not to schedule an 11th game, up to them. I think something like this is a MUCH better solution than what is being done now.

And yet, no one has answered mine and Ram's question, and we are about to hit four pages. :ohbrother:

Have you even read my suggestion about playoffs, or did you just put your two cents in? Which is okay, but doesn't make sense.

District winner gets a first round bye, 2 and 3 seeds play each others district. Boom, there's a first round AND second round. All determined by regular season district play success.

Thank you. I honestly don't see how people compare football to baseball and basketball. Basketball or baseball is completely different and any team can get lucky in those sports. One can simply make five three pointers in a game and be lucky. One cannot (95% confidence) have five touchdowns in a game unless your name is Damien Harris...which is why I am 95% confident instead of 100%.

I have an idea...everyone get off their holier than thou attitude and just let it play out like it is now.

I don't understand wanting LESS football each season.

I don't understand why some think tie-breakers to eliminate teams is better than playing it out on the field.

Just because some people disagree with you about the merits of 0-10 or 1-9 teams making the playoffs does not mean they have a "holier than thou" attitude. I can see merits of both sides of the argument but find myself on the side that you should have to do SOMETHING to earn a playoff spot...not just show up for 10 games. If you think watching 50-0 running clock games is good because it is MORE football, I don't begrudge you. That is your opinion and you own it...no problem with that. But calling people who disagree with you "holier than thou" is weak. As Little Ram said earlier (and I believe him), there are a lot of players on 0-10 and 1-9 teams who would agree that LESS football is a good thing at the end of the regular season.
