Evidently you haven't been to Toys R Us around Christmas because the answer to your question is "pretty much every person on the planet" judging by how crowded they are. And while I agree with about Amazon, you are not correct about the big box stores. Wal-Mart has a pretty crappy selection compared to Toys R Us and the prices aren't much better.

 

Toys R Us is one the large specialty store chains that are in lots of trouble, and lost a little over $1 billion last year, and posted its lowest sales in 5 years. Yes they may be crowded during the holiday season, but they are ghost towns during the rest of the year. And believe it or not, Walmart is the number 1 toy selling retailer in the US. Big category killer retailers are folding up every day. While they may not be in danger of closing anytime soon, they are on that slow steady decline.

This is outside of Toy's R Us target market. I'm not sure why their marketing or product development department would even see the need to include. If I'm an adult who wants a figurine of Walt, I'm not thinking "YES. Let's go to Toys R Us." I'm thinking online or possibly at Walmart or Spencers. Toys R Us is not being genuine to their brand by offering an adult section or toys like this. Just get rid of them. Save yourself more bad PR.

Anything to make money. It's not something I'd buy but if someone else wants to buy it for their kids I do not care.

I disagree they are ghost towns the rest of the year. We are in there several times through out the year for our kids birthdays or other kids in the family. While they aren't busting at the seams they are busy. I also don't disagree with them losing money and eventually they will be out of business, at least under the current business model. I don't think they are going anywhere anytime soon. It's just tough being a big category killer retailer, as they no longer have the advantages they used to have because you can buy toys almost anywhere now, and they don't have the monopoly they used to have.

I think the problem here is a positioning/perception problem. ToysRus has not clearly positioned themselves as a toy store "for all ages" including adults. Thus, having a high profile adult-targeted toy on a shelf that most people believe is reserved for children's toys creates a PR issue.

Some parents cone up with the stupidest demands and protests, but here there is one that I agree with 100%!

This might explain why they decided to go WAY outside their normal demographic.
