Beechwood 62 Dayton 0

Cmon. 2a is pathetic too. New Caths district is every bit as weak as BW. Why not want two teams from here have a shot at getting out of region? Brossart is not in district, nor are they on the schedule, and I believe they are 2a The Breds have two really bad playoff games as well annually, every bit as weak as BWs. No matter what class you are in, by the time you hit the third round you see a pretty good team. I'd rather see the KHSAA adopt that only the top two teams in each district make the playoffs. Why prolong a teams schedule for a week to lose on a running clock? If the outcome is almost a certainty, especially in football, why risk the injury?

We all agree that it would be best for only the top two teams to advance.

I STRONGLY DISAGREE with your assessment of 1a Beechwood vs Dayton, Bellevue, Ludlow as opposed to 2A Beechwood vs NCC, Lloyd, Newport and Holy Cross. They would be a perfect 2A fit and more strongly challenged than in their present, or future situation.

With NewCath #s wont be long till they are back in single A. It will look like the old district plus Brossart.

I remember the Beechwood Arrogance Train (BAT) considering moving up to 2A several years ago.

Thankfully for Beechwood cooler heads prevailed.

What is Newport Catholic's district record since the 6 class system? .....

I will answer for you, zero losses for Newport Catholic in district play since 6 classes. The same would be true for Beechwood. The scores might be a couple touchdowns closer but that is all.

Fair enough. Perhaps a little better, but if you swapped BW and NCC results would be the same. So that district may keep starters on until halftime, but all still blowouts. BW and NCC both get it, which is why they schedule very tough in non district. They know district games are scrimmages, and running clocks are imminent. Perhaps this year Newport poses a little challenge, but that's it.

Newport Catholic has been dominant in most of its district games since going to 2A, but overall, the teams in their district have been better than Dayton, Bellevue, and Ludlow, especially over the past couple years.

In other words, the posters above you are saying Beechwood needs to go to 2A so they can win district games by 4 TD's instead of 6 TD's.

Is that where you are coming from Mustang?

A) I'm not knowledgable about football class structure, in that is the option open to move up if a school/program would choose to do so??? Or are all schools classified by enrollment, and that's that?

B) IMO, Beechwood might be a Class 1-A school, by enrollment numbers, but they are anything but a Class 1A football program. They have Class 2A numbers and Class 2A/3A/4A facilities.

It seems to me that the intent of the KHSAA would be to provide similar teams with similar talent to compete in the same class. Beechwood has a HUGE edge over its Class A brethern, and now with Mayfield moving up will probably win 1A for the next four years.

I'm curious how Beechwood is viewed by other programs such as Frankfort and Bellevue. Inner city, play what they have in thier school, I'm assuming no significant transfers/kids coming from other districts to play there, and minimal facilities. IMO again, I think they overachieve with what they have to do it with. Shouldn't they be given a shot to win a 1-A state championship??? But instead, they will lose at some point to the Beechwood monster, which is perfectly capable of competing at the 2-A level, which would seem to be a better fit.

I also understand that life isn't fair, and that if Beechwood finds themselves in a position where they can win State Championships where they are, why move up to where they probably won't win one, or at least will have to compete for it among stiffer/similar competition???

Perhaps there might come a day when NCC qualifies by enrollment to drop to 1A, however, it would be counterproductive to their program and their pride. I guarantee you that they will lobby to remain in 2-A. There is nothing to say that Lloyd, Newport, or the Holy Cross of a couple of years ago, can't rise to the occasion and knock them off, BUT if that happens they will know that they gave it their best shot and came up short, and didn't cakewalk over inferior competition and take advantage of a numbers situation that happened to fall in their lap.

Other than the fact that they are in a more advantagous postion to win a state championship, I am curious why the Guru thinks that staying in Class 1-A is the "right thing to do."

I really thought Beechwood would opt for 2A in the latest alignment but I was dead wrong. I am not saying they are doing anything wrong by playing in 1A, but I really thought they would rather be in the 2A district instead of a noncompetitive 1A district and in most years region. Four years from now they almost certainly will go from being the largest 1A school to a 2A school so it is likely delaying what is coming.

I was surprised that BW didn’t move up as well. Not because of anything other than I thought the BW family felt they are above playing in Class A. No I don’t know or get the perception they think they are better, but just based on the Winning Tradition one would assume that could be the mentality. Based on their success I couldn’t blame them if that was their way of thinking.

I don’t blame them for not moving up. They become the team to beat and should have a reserved spot in the finals each season. And that is what it is about.

Someone asked what how Frankfort viewed Beechwood. They view Beechwood and Mayfield as the gold standard. I know they take pride in having an opportunity to get a shot at the Tigers each year in the regional final. As far as thinking BW has an advantage – sure they do but that is life some situations will always be better. But that doesn’t mean Frankfort uses that as excuse. It just makes it that more special if they beat them. I think you can take many of coaches into schools like BW and be successful. I don’t think you can take a lot coaches into a school like Frankfort and be successful. They are just different in many ways. Not a knock on any coach – just stating a school like Frankfort who is the 10th smallest school in the state and the student body is 80% free and reduce lunch there are obstacles that have to be handled that may not be an issue at a place like BW.

From a Bellevue perspective of how BW is viewed. This is my opinion.

I can tell you everything about the last time Bellevue beat BW. 2006, I was in the stands that game and remember almost every single detail about that game. I can also tell you my senior year which was 2008 I remember prepping so much for our game against them and giving it our all, ultimately we were doomed from the start. I remember we were a very good team that year but still out matched in every aspect of the game. From a Bellevue stand point, again my opinion, I wouldn't shed a single tear if BW moved up. That being said, to be the best you have to beat the best and thats the bottom line.

Nothing wrong with Beechwood staying in 1A but with Mayfield leaving they will go back to being the team to beat.

i have to agree with Mali in this one. 2A is not any better in NKY. I think for instance NCC went I to district play this he winless yet will win their district. 1A and 2A are very similar here. Also as far as the facilities go, what do you do with all the other classes that have advantages over other schools in the same class?

SK and Ryle and Campbell and Dixie all have better facilities than Cooper and Boone and Conner and they will all be 6A next year. Just because a school has better facilities shouldn't punish them. Have you seen Beechwoods locker rooms when they were winning all their titles? They were garbage they won more titles with bad facilities than they have with the new ones so it doesn't matter.

Glad to hear Beechwood kept the score down.

After jumping to a 34-0 first quarter lead it took the tigers a while to get the next touchdown for the running clock. After the score it was JV/2nd team rest of the way out. Dayton also substituted in the 2nd half. It didn't have the appearance of running the score up. It seemed like first half was varsity and 2nd half was JV. There were kids on both sides of the ball playing hard to the end. Looks like Beechwood did learn something from Mayfield by taking a knee multiple time late in the game to end the scoring.
