I don't know for a fact but I think Beechwood is taking the stance we will play where assigned in the 6 class system. I know in the beginning they did not want the 6 classes. I know Highland and Cov Cath asked to move up. Who else?

Innocent question, But what does Beechwood get out of being Class 1-A for the next four years except 16 more lopsided blowouts and four more odds on State Championships now that Mayfield is heading to 2-A??? Could Beechwood have opted to go 2-A, or was that not an option? They would be a great fit in 2-A and have a much more measurable sense of accomplishment by beating equally talented competition, and actually having something to brag about by winning a state title.

 

How many 1A programs that you know of have a turf field and a football dedicated "fieldhouse" to work out in?

 

The fieldhouse is not football only. The fieldhouse, which includes weightroom and training facilities, are utilized by all sports teams and a few other folks for extracurricular activities! :-) The facility also has locker rooms utilized by other sports including girls sports. The turf field is a huge plus for Beechwood. Because of the lack of land, the field is used for physical education as well as recess during the day. Beechwood's field is also used for the softball team in the spring. Because of that, the Softball team is able to play early season games and get games in that would be cancelled otherwise.

 

Is the system skewed, and is it maybe time that the KHSAA uses a new measuring stick other than enrollment to determine classification???

 

How about number of kids who come out for football, or how about $$$$ spent on their football program???

 

Problem with first statement is that teams would start cutting to keep a number within a classification. Lots of kids play at Beechwood that never start or even play much. That is Beechwood football. As for money spent on the program, I wonder how different it really is. The might get more because they have better revenue through attendance. That is one of the advantages of scheduling teams like Cov Cath or New Cath every year. The Beechwood parents have to provide a lot of things for their football players.

 

I have no bones to pick with Beechwood, and our program certainly is not in a postion to contend for a state championship, but they now seem to loom over the field.

^^^ Fair enough, I've come away with some new perceptions of how Beechwood is viewed by many.

 

If a poll were conducted it seems that it might be an even split as to whether it is thought that Beechwood should have moved up, or are entitled by the rules and guidlines determining classification to remain in, and dominate, Class 1-A football.

Not much other than hoping that players stay healthy. Blowouts happen in all classes.
