Sorry for the slow game report. I had other activities and obligations, but better late than never.

 

Before I go into the details, I must say - BRETT SLUSHER! Wow, he was incredible. He made big plays on offense. He made big plays on defense. He returned a kickoff for a TD. That was one of the best games I have ever seen by a Beechwood player.

 

Beechwood received the opening kickoff and showed everyone on the field and in the stands that they were here to play Beechwood football. The Tigers lined up and went straight at Covington Catholic. It was run after run between the tackles. The Tiger offensive line took control on this first drive and did not let up all day. Almost every football game is won or lost at the line of scrimmage and that was the story in this one. The Tigers' opening drive covered 69 yards and was finished off with a Kyle Fieger 12 yard TD pass to Jonathon Stokes. Mario German added the extra point and the grinding drive lasted over 6 minutes to give Beechwood a 7-0 lead. Covington Catholic responded with a nice drive of their own. Their offensive line opened holes and the read option worked well with QB Adam Wagner getting a couple of nice runs. However, Wagner suffered a concussion on one of those runs and left the game for the day. Ben Dressman is a very capable replacement with a year's experience after leading the CCH offense last year. Dressman finished off the drive with a 5 yard pass to Ryan McGinness on the last play of the first quarter. Riley McKown blew through the middle and blocked the extra point kick keeping the Tigers in front at 7-6.

 

On the opening play of the second quarter, Brett Slusher returned the CCH kickoff 85 yards and just like that Beechwood had a 14-6 lead. CCH went three and out on their next drive from the 10 yard line and shanked the punt, giving Beechwood the ball at the CCH 29. The Tigers could not capitalize as the CCH defense rose up and stopped Beechwood on downs. Just a couple plays later though, Beechwood had the ball back after Jacob Cottingham intercepted a Dressman pass at the CCH 40. The Tigers looked ready to move in for a score but a late hit penalty led to a punt by Beechwood. CCH again went three and out and another bad punt had the Tigers starting another drive in CCH territory at their 42. The Tigers reached into the playbook and pulled out a halfback pass play with Joe Studer hitting Brett Slusher for a 41 yard TD with 2:50 to go. Beechwood led 21-6 as halftime arrived.

 

CCH came out in the second half and it was clear they wanted to show some dominance as they lined up and ran it right at the Tigers. The BW defense bent but didn't break ending a goal line stand with Brett Slusher sacking Dressman. BW had the ball at the 20 and went back to Beechwood football. After crossing into CCH territory, it looked like the drive might stall. The Fieger threw a long ball into a stiff wind. The ball hung there as a BW and CCH player waited and then jumped. Guess who came down with the jump ball ... yes, Brett Slusher wrestled the ball away for a 35 yard TD reception. With 5:23 to go, the Tigers led 28-6. CCH was not giving up that easily. They went on another drive to the goal line but once again BW stopped the Colonels short of scoring at the 10 yard line.

 

Beechwood's following drive carried the game into the fourth quarter. The Tigers were forced to punt and CCH had the ball with a chence to try and get back into this game. That ended quickly, when that guy - Brett Slusher - intercepted a pass. The Tigers were now just lining up, running out of the power formation and killing the clock. CCH stacked the line of scrimmage and forced a BW punt. CCH then moved the ball on another drive that it looked like the Tiger defense had stopped as the Colonels faced a 4th and 10. CCH ran their jet sweep play and the CCH player weaved his way along the sideline through traffic, made multiple cuts and found his way into the end zone on a 40 yard run. (CCH fans help me out, I did not note the # of the player who scored on this play). With 3:56 left, it was BW 28 CCH 13. Everyone knew what was coming but the Tigers covered the onside kick. From there, BW's power formation got the first downs they needed to run out the clock. The game ended with BW taking a knee at about the CCH 20.

I will say, I told people I thought BW may be able to keep it close, but never did I expect this.

 

This is what teams do who need a boost, they step up, both the players and the coaches.

 

I do feel bad for the CCH players with the direction that their program is going.

Congrats Beechwood coaches, players, cheerleaders and fans braving a cold day in October to WIN a big game. Great game plan by coaching staff and the young men of Beechwood went out and played like Champions. Way to keep CovCath's offense off the field and controlling the football. And when your defense was on the field they just flat out punished people. Very impressive game and Beechwood is still made up of mostly Juniors. Show me a Beechwood team with a Slusher on it and a good attitude and that is what you get a great football player. This Beechwood team is very talented and they have some very good weapons. Good luck Tigers going forward. Oh by the way great game calling Coach Hergott and game plan by a great coaching staff. JD

CovCath's Special Teams were definitely not special Saturday. Congrats to the Tigers!

 

Mayfield's internet service usually gears up in November about the same time service in Fort Mitchell dies. It is always an interesting coincidence.

Congrats to the Beechies!! I knew they could play with the Colonels but I had no idea they would spank them like that!!! Brett Slusher was a man amongst boys yesterday. Congrats to Brett and his family. I think it is pretty amazing that little brother could beat big brother like they did..WOW!! What is going on in Park Hills? :idunno:

Not only did the Colonels lose but the crazies lost too.

 

What was supposed to be the best student section in the area has fallen to the bottom of the totem pole in my mind. Many better student sections around the area who don't desert their team whenever they get behind in a game. Makes me even prouder to be a fan of a couple other teams, and BW being one of them.

The Crazies are famous for support. Epic fail.

 

It was cold and the boys were wearing their traditional Beechwood game kilt/Braveheart outfits, but for a cheering section that is so proud of itself and gets such rave reviews (rightfully earned), they embarrassed themselves much more than the football team and Coach Wirth did. To leave in the middle of the third quarter when their team could use support the most, just embarrassing.

I only saw the first BW drive before I headed out to Devougrass. BW simply ran it down the throats of CCH D. Sounds like they had success all day running.

 

We cannot discount losing a starting QB 5 plays into the game and the impact it had on the offense. Yes, we brought in a kid who played really well last year. However, it's his first extended action of the season and he's coming off of some sort of injury. That hurt. Might have helped the D stay off the field a bit and keep BW from running so often.

 

With that, big props to BW. Nothing like a big win over a rival after reading about how bad you were going to get drilled. Says a lot about the staff and the boys.
