The old show scholastic sports America had him starting in a 2 man backfield w Aman (sp?) Green. They were the USA Today backs also. Additionally he was given a small feature in Sports Illustrated. As for competition, you can only look at the strength of the teams they played at the time they played them. I feel safe to say that Harris never faced what Alexander did. 2 TD'S at the Pit agaist Elder in a win. Making the 4A finals. Harris hasn't seen that type of competition yet.

Harris saw pretty good competition at that Elite camp that was on ESPN didn't he? Does that count? I'm thinking he made a good showing there. Enough to still be named the #1 RB in the country when he left.

I believe this. I was younger when Shaun Alexander was playing and less in tune with recruiting and whatnot. Was he as highly touted as Harris is? Meaning, was he ever the #1 RB in the country?

 

When your final decision for what school to pick is Notre Dame and Alabama I would say you are close to #1 .

I haven't seen Harris, but did see Alexander in HS. Just an absolute man amongst boys. When you compare HS careers there are too many variables to be definitive. From everything I have read and heard Harris could be the best some day, I guess. We will probably need to wait 10-15 years before we really know. SA is the best Ky HS player I have ever seen.

He is breaking records at Thomas More. He is an All American player for them. There is talk he is going to get to an NFL camp.

As I look at the stats, Derek Homer is the one who sticks out for me. I never saw him play so I will let others talk about him.

I remember watching Alexander play Elder... He is to this day the best high school player I ever saw in Kentucky or Ohio. I remember an old man at the game saying we are gonna watch this kid play on Sundays in a few years...He was right.

The Case for Alexander:

 

When Damian Harris is on the cover of Madden, I'll think about it.

 

When he's going #1, #2, or #3 in fantasy drafts (behind LaDanian Tomlinson, Priest Holmes, etc.) as well, then maybe then I'll start to think he's comparable to Alexander.

 

 

The Case for Harris:

 

Remind me, where was Alexander ranked in his class-- how does that compare to Harris?

 

Is it Harris' fault he goes to a smaller school and doesn't have tons of talent around him?

Sure Shaun Alexander may have faced tougher competition than Damien Harris. Shaun Alexander also played for a school that still won and could compete without him. One thing I think we all can agree on is that Damien Harris isn't playing with the same kind of teammates that Shaun Alexander played with during high school. Before Harris began playing varsity football Madison Southern won a total of 5 games in a 5 year period. Once he began getting carries they won 7 games. Last year they won 10 and this year they are undefeated so far and are solely dependent on what he does. If I'm not mistaken he had to take a kickoff to the house just to beat South Laurel last week. Boone County won before Shaun Alexander and won after Shaun Alexander. They were an above average program at the time. Madison Southern will never be considered the program that Boone County is despite where Boone County currently sits. Damien Harris HAS to run for 350 yards a game this year just for his team to win. Next year Madison Southern will come crashing back to earth. Boone County still won at the same level for 3 years after Shaun Alexander.

 

I'm still rolling with Damien Harris.

I'm still sticking with Alexander having a really, really, really damned good KY HS career. I'll stick by saying that if he weren't in the same years as Tim Couch (who was named one of ESPN's 10 Best High School Athletes EVER), then he'd have his Mr. Football hardware and people would think more of him.

 

It's not like you just get down to signing with Notre Dame or Alabama and explode once you get there.

 

It's hard to say that the best guy ever wasn't even Mr. Football in his own class, but it's not like Alexander was really playing in a typical year either.
