I think the main separator amongst all theses teams is defense and I believe Mayfield has the best overall defense in class 1A.

 

I agree, even though I think our secondary is still a little shaky. The bad thing about that is it won't get any in game work probably until the Caldwell game. The run d is looking very, very good right now.

No. They are #2 until they have a chance to prove otherwise and then make good on that chance. Mayfield is not to be questioned by anyone in 1A as of today.

Yes, but that happened 4 weeks ago. They have been without him a long time.

 

My firsthand opinion is it wouldn't have mattered who they put in the backfield. They were getting blown up on the line of scrimmage and they had no answer for it.

As a Belfry fan let me set the record straight.

 

BELFRY WAS NOT WITHOUT THEIR TOP 2 RB's!

 

Belfry was playing without Catron who was a starting HB (he would be the #2 HB), but he has been out since the First Half against Henry Clay.

Catron's replacement was not an option as Joplin has left the Pirate team (he would be #3 HB). X Willis is the Belfry feature back at HB and he played this game and had over 100 yards rushing.. he missed a few plays due to cramping but he played all 4 Quarters.

 

In addition... Willis right now is probably Belfry's 3rd best running threat. FB Austin Hatfield and QB Keaton Taylor have been the ones toting the mail all year. They BOTH PLAYED.

 

I know people would prefer to have an excuse that Pikeville's win was a hoax but I am telling you they are legit. Do I think Belfry played their A Game or even their B game? Absolutely not... they had three huge plays called back by self inflicted penalties...they missed a FG after a drive stalled.. and emotionally they were flat. With that said, I want to re-state that this game was not about Belfry giving this game away, PIKEVILLE TOOK IT!

 

Belfry had a fire lit under them after the Half and dominated the 3rd Quarter but guess how bad they outscored Pikeville? 0-0.

 

Pikeville D weathered the storm and came through when they needed them. Pikeville even LOST the turnover battle 2-1...with both of those turnovers directly leading to 14 Belfry points.

 

Once again Pikeville took the fight to Belfry up front and drove it at will for 3 Quarters against the vaunted Pirate Front 7. Defensively they outquicked the much bigger Pirates and disrupted the Pirate offense all night.

 

I hate the "IF they played 10 games" analogy... and hypothetically speaking Belfry may win every other time they play...but all we know is Pikeville won when they played on the field and if nothing else proved they were at the very least improved enough to compete with Belfry.

 

This is not an overrated Belfry team either. They may not have played like their #1 ranking Friday..but they have dominated a very solid 6A Henry Clay and also physically manhandled 5A Southwestern who is easily one of the Top 12 teams in 5A IMHO.

Don't sleep on Russellville. They have made a tweak here and there and have the athletes to compete with Mayfield.

 

I'm not too impressed with Russellville's 2 pt victory over FC but their game this week with Franklin-Simpson should tell more.

Opinions vary but I'm of the opinion that a healthy Catron makes this Belfry team a lot better on both sides of the ball. By no means am I saying that him being injured caused us to lose, but he's the kind of kid who takes pride in blocking, carrying out fakes, and doing the little things on offense to help make things click. He's a stronger runner than all the others mentioned not named Hatfield, too.

 

On D you gotta wonder how long it would've taken Pikeville receivers to start worrying about where Cateon is as opposed to catching the football. He's got a knack for making the big hit and will make most HS receivers think twice about coming over the middle.

WOW. Everyone take a breath....I dont think that you can give Pikeville the trophy yet. Mayfield won last night by three (3) touchdowns with a lackluster offensive performance and shut out a top back in WKY from the endzone. From what I have seen, east side of the state doesnt play the competion the Mayfield does and that has shown that the last two years at WKU. One win doesnt make a school in the discussion in the top spot in

1A in any way shape or form unless they consistently have those caliber wins and play that caliber competition (ala Mayfield) all year long.

I think Pikeville's schedule is pretty comparable to Mayfield's. Maybe not better but comparable. Your side of the state gives a lot more credence to say Graves County (with a losing record)or PT (also a team with a losing record and chronic underachiever) than you do to Prestonsburg on the Eastern side. Seems natural. But if you look at the actual record (not reputation) of each team's opponents they are pretty close to even.

 

I for one am anxious to see if the Eastern side of 1A can produce competition for the Cardinals. :thumb:

After beating the defending, and possible this year's, Class 3A State Champion, Belfry 29-20, and Mayfield's lackluster win over Graves County, 21-0 is Pikeville the team to beat in Class 1A?

 

Right now I would put them at #2. Mayfield, imo should remain #1 until someone beats them.

Pikeville being #1 is fine by me, all will wash out in the end one way or the other and might actually be a good place for the Cards to be for now
