Pikeville Beating Belfry is much > than Beechwood beating Franklin Co...IMO

 

4 of Pikeville's opponents only have one loss ( to Pikeville) Hazard, Prestonsburg, Paintsville and Belfry

I saw that. They have Pikeville ranked #1 in 1A.

That same data from the same website would also say that Belfry is a better team than Franklin County, Dixie Heights, and Mt. Healthy.

 

Calpreps also ranks Pikeville ahead of Beechwood.

 

The margin of victory though certainly is what makes Calpreps like the Beechwood win more, and let's call a spade a spade...it was a darn impressive win! Beechwood throttled a team who just one week ago barely scraped by another top team in 1A. There is absolutely no denying Beechwood has a strong team.

^ I don't have a problem at all with Pikeville being ranked ahead of Beechwood. They have the resume to support it. I also say the Beechwood win was more impressive than the Pikeville win. So I agree with calpreps on everything except I say Mayfield is #1.

Let's get real for a second. Since 2009, Mayfield has a 74-6 win/loss record(counting this season too). They have 3 State Championships. They also have 2 State Runner-up titles during that span as well. So, since 2009, Mayfield has played in every State Championship Game, winning 3 out of 5, including last year. Pikeville beat the #1 team in 3A, and it is a big win. I think they will be in Bowling Green as Mayfield defends yet another title. However, for there to be a thread proclaiming that Pikeville has an argument to be in the #1 spot is beyond insane. We're not even halfway into the season and Mayfield has given no indication that they will not be in another State Championship game this year, and most likely claim their 4th title in six years. That is what the pros would call a dynasty, and they deserve the respect of a dynasty. There is no reason this Mayfield team should not stay at #1. I consider this six year span of dominance they have put up to quite possibly have the potential to be the best of its kind in KY history if it continues?

 

The others I would compare it to.....

 

Beechwood - 7 State Championships between 1991-1999

 

Central - 5 State Championships between 2007-2012

 

Highlands had several as well, and so did Trinity. However they were more scattered than the above.

I think Mayfield is #1 right now, but the problem with your logic is the kids who won all those games for Mayfield are graduated players. State championship trophies don't win games this year.

I'm sure they've gotten a new crop of players every single year for the past six years, but that hasn't slowed them down. They graduate players every year, but still manage to play for a state championship. Beechwood use to be able to do that, but its been awhile. Right now, Mayfield has a rock solid winning program and atmosphere. Until that slows down, they'll be #1.

I guess you forgot all about Boyle County setting the record (since broken by HHS) of winning 5 straight and appearing in 6 straight. (1999-2004)

Nobody has more respect for Mayfield from the Danville area (remember them ) than I, but the thing that gets me is how some act offended to even debate at this point in the season someone other than Mayfield may be #1. The vast majority on here see Mayfield as #1, including me, but one shouldn't be surprised if other teams join in the discussion as perhaps the best. It will all be settled in December but until then it gives us something to do. :thumb:
